  1. Vicious doesn't have great breaking strength at the knot. Seguar is really good stuff and I use both the regular red label stuff (line type) but the blue label may be a bit stiffer as well as abrasion resistant. They now offer some more specialized fluros to but I haven't tried them. For flies I tie my own and use 50 lb MONO as it has a bit of shock absorption and stretch and I don't use snubbers on any of my rigs. Teh 50 lb Big Game mono is also pretty abrasion resistant.
  2. You'll be fishing on and just off bottom....6 lb test and your lure will be history on your first encounter with bottom Flatlining and toplining are the same thing unless perhaps you are in a hospital setting
  3. I think you'll probably encounter opinions about Lowrance just as you would with the Birds. I can tell you that after years of Lowrance's (and currently have the Elite 7 HDI) the owner manuals and website "resources" totally suck and are a sad joke and the techies at Navico ( they now own Lowrance) have not been all that great or helpful from my perspective. The units themselves are acceptable. If you can afford it I'd say get a Furuno together with an Airmar transducer as they are a higher quality unit than most of the others and are highly reliable over time. They are by far the major choice of the commercial fishermen and that in itself says something.
  4. It could matter if you go across something in the water though like a stick etc. could take it out.
  5. Geez Mark.....and I had a hell of a time with Algebra
  6. Great little motors I have 2 of them. Real nice for sneaking up on the perch
  7. If fishing where there are big northerns or tigers etc. you can use the ultra thin titanium wire (leader material) which stays stiff and keeps things spinning real well while offering some "protection" as well.....a little pricey but worth it for that application.
  8. If you do send it for repairs take the opportunity to have some carbon fiber drags put in. You won't be sorry.
  9. WTG Jeremy.....man....I know that feeling firsthand when a big one comes unbuttoned and its almost like looking in the rearview mirror and seeing the flashing lights of a police car it sucks Heck of a fish for this time of year.....and the way things have been going thus far up that way things should be really heating up in late July and August.
  10. Yes the north end ramp was clear today when I was there and they are putting in a lot of big stone on the breakwall there.
  11. Thanks for the report Gerry. Hope to be over that way soon after the perch.
  12. If the fleas are very thick in the spot you happen to fish (they vary in concentrations throughout the lakes) there is nothing that is fool proof in totally avoiding them....they even clog up downrigger cables despite the large diameter of the wire. I think in many cases they may be a little easier to get off wire than braid. As far as downriggers go I've had real good luck the past few years with the Bloodrun Sea Flee line for mono but usually any CONNECTIONS get them. They are really pesky little critters to deal with.
  13. Andy if you decide to do Honeoye it may be advisable to do it early in the season rather than later because it becomes VERY congested with weeds in the warmer water and often there is a corresponding Blue -Green Algae/Coliform problem and swimming is prohibited then (for good reason)
  14. Actually this sort of makes my point about not all water current being the same and a reason why they are fished differently. The currents in streams are a good example of a very different type of water current then that of the lakes because the water flow is restricted and concentrated laterally without the same cross current influences as present in a lake environment. The current is channeled mainly in one direction whereas the lake currents are more diffuse and have more lateral expanse and because the water is also deeper it has a very different verticality as well (i.e. path of travel in the water column) whereas streams are relatively shallow with ocassionally deeper "holes" but mostly shallow water constantly running in pretty much one direction in alignment with the land features (downward). Lake currents run more horizontally and even can run upward in the water column to a much greater degree and their directionality may be more significantly influenced by factors such as water temperature and wind direction and speed..
  15. Jeff- Sean (above) would be the guy I'd recommend. Les
  16. Andy you might want to try Ted's bait shop for info at 5772 Big Tree Road (Rt 20A) in Lakeville. Sorry I don't have his phone number handy.
  17. Paul makes some good points and I would say additionally if you wish to get away from a longer rod consider one of the light to medium weight Tidewater roller tip rods about 6 ft. (about $60 new). I have five of them for wire (dipseys and Seth green rigs) and I love them. If you are ever anywhere near Keuka lake (Branchport) Fishy Business carries them locally. In any event with SS wire you'll need either a twilli tip or a roller tip or you'll cut through your rod standard tip.
  18. Very professional looking job Patriot
  19. Sounds as though you came up with the probable answer to your situation (transducer difference and placement. As far as everything I have read and deciphered the main difference between a CHIRP and non CHIRP unit ( e.g. the Elite7's) Is that is"cleans up" or adds to the signal a bit at the mid range giving it a little better target separation (e.g. between a fish and bait for example), higher definition (resolution) of the target, and cleans up some of the signal so there is less "static" looking stuff on the screen (provided someone isn't using a similar unit nearby ). I currently have the non-CHIRP HDI model and it seems to perform the tasks acceptably without CHIRP (defined arches and separation from bait at least when used on the 200khz mode. The 83 khz may be a little different situation when running deep.
  20. Nice going on the steelie Kev and good report. Glad to hear the trailer is back in order. After that situation you saw on 96A it sure brings home the importance of getting things right with trailers ....Good to see that your dad is feeling better and fishing too.
  21. Nick I fully agree that DEC does the best they can with it. The high water conditions always wreak havoc with their plans though and it looks like another of those years for it. They aren't the easiest critters to manage either.
  22. As long as Marsh Creek and Castle Creek are swollen and the street runoff pipes are running the mud will be circulating. They get the run-off from most of Geneva's properties emptying into the north end and it will take a while to resolve .
  23. How about a Bull Shark maybe on titanium leaders? Maybe the rumors are true
  24. Man....I was hoping they would get to it soon because those nasty things seem to be increasingly attached to fish once again on Seneca when for a few years conditions seemed to be much improved over the "old days" but it may also be part of the life cycle and adult status too.
  25. I was about to answer but Paul got it first. I would add that what was recommended was for braided copper which most folks use but for single strand copper ANY kinks need to be cut out. because straightening the wire severely affects the integrity of it. Same for monel wiire
