  1. I fished solo today from the north end from 7:30AM until about 5 Pm then took my wife for a boat ride for another hour (guess I've had enough boating for one day ). Started out north of the pump station in about 55 ft of water and started marking bait and fish almost immediately...hoards of bait and some fish nearby. Couldn't get them to go after multiple tries from every direction. I was running2 riggers with sliders and a 6 color leadcore with a Great Lakes spoon silver and purple stripe #44 and once I got about to German Brothers it was game on with a beautiful rainbow that jumped multiple times. He measured at 26 1/2 inches and was returned to the water unharmed and was then marked in my Angler Diary. I then trolled a couple miles south and then back north all without any action so i decided to go to the east side and trolled south and another rainbow took the leadcore with a no name silver spoon and he was airborne for about half the battle. A nice 23 incher that was recorded and returned unharmed. It was about noon then and I trolled the rest of the afternoon without any hits on either the downriggers or the 275 copper which I tried at various depths in place of one of the riggers...nothing One more brief hit and drag going out and gone on the core. That was it for the rest of the afternoon no matter what I tried. A fun day on the pond but hot as H. When I made it to about the Christian camp I turned toward Danny Wegman's place and went to the west side. at about 180 ft of water I encountered VERY large pods of pond like algae and sticks and debris spread out over that area. so i stopped going south. The north end water was basically clear of debris and the water was very green colored and not clear at all. I'd steer clear of the southern area because there is some thin grass in the mix that gets on all your stuff beside all the other crap. Surface temp started the day at 71 but late afternoon there was a lot of 75 degree water I had some interesting screens today and one was a real puzzle not sure what that structure was but the fish and bait sure hugged it (near the water plant) see questionmark pic
  2. Very cool Is that a 13 ft. Whaler you're in?
  3. I think that your last sentence answered the question and they may be eating at night or in the early hours of AM. Always harder when there is a lot of bait available.
  4. Outriggers have their place and time. One major advantage is that other folks can see them from a distance and the smart ones will say away from you and folks often don't see the boards until too late. You can run multiple lines from them too just not out as far as boards. I've used mine since the seventies and yet quit using the big boards long ago for that reason. At least with the inlines you can make adjustments quicker.

  6. Even from the standpoint of "backup" to your big motor it makes sense to have a separate tank in case your fuel supply gets compromised (e.g. by water entering it etc.)
  7. I wouldn't ignore the upper 40 ft either over whatever for silvers especially and with small to medium orange/red spoons trolled at a little faster speed than for lakers. There are often landlocks hanging out near the park. . Early AM before the sun goes high is usually the best time or later in the afternoon /evenings. If you notice any bug hatches happening run some lines near the surface with small spoons run way back (100ft or more) for potential silvers active near the surface. Have to experiment with the deeper stuff (e.g. flasher/spinney fly combos) too especially if you spot bait pods anywhere.
  8. Good one!
  9. Stiffness is real important in some things....that's why all the Viagra commercials I think it may be a bit over rated in this instance as well as the invisibility issue with fluoro....I wonder how many fish they interviewed to determine that they can't see it vs. mono. I think sometimes we take ourselves too seriously and I'm not really disputing what you guys are saying...just that there are different ways of looking at it.
  10. The fly was a popular commercial one often seen on this site and it was just taken out of the package that day and it wasn't the only occurance I haven't had any problems since tying my own and I guess that is what it is about....having faith in your equipment which to me is more important than the potential stiffness issue. I use fluoro for many other applications but not this particular one.
  11. The reason I changed to 50 lb mono (which is pretty stiff) and now tie my own is because I had breakage with 30 plus pound kings with commercially tied flies. Fluoro is stiff but it is also brittle and with some knots can even cut itself and the stretch in the mono helps absorb shock. It is a matter of preference I guess in the final analysis but losing those really nice fish (and flies) did it for me.
  12. The mono spool filler. One of the reasons I use it is because it is very durable and strong as well. I started out using the previous version of it in salt water many many years ago when it was called Hombre and I still have the remainder of a 3,000 yd spool and the line is actually still good on it after about 30 years believe it or not
  13. Vicious doesn't have great breaking strength at the knot. Seguar is really good stuff and I use both the regular red label stuff (line type) but the blue label may be a bit stiffer as well as abrasion resistant. They now offer some more specialized fluros to but I haven't tried them. For flies I tie my own and use 50 lb MONO as it has a bit of shock absorption and stretch and I don't use snubbers on any of my rigs. Teh 50 lb Big Game mono is also pretty abrasion resistant.
  14. You'll be fishing on and just off bottom....6 lb test and your lure will be history on your first encounter with bottom Flatlining and toplining are the same thing unless perhaps you are in a hospital setting
  15. I think you'll probably encounter opinions about Lowrance just as you would with the Birds. I can tell you that after years of Lowrance's (and currently have the Elite 7 HDI) the owner manuals and website "resources" totally suck and are a sad joke and the techies at Navico ( they now own Lowrance) have not been all that great or helpful from my perspective. The units themselves are acceptable. If you can afford it I'd say get a Furuno together with an Airmar transducer as they are a higher quality unit than most of the others and are highly reliable over time. They are by far the major choice of the commercial fishermen and that in itself says something.
  16. It could matter if you go across something in the water though like a stick etc. could take it out.
  17. Geez Mark.....and I had a hell of a time with Algebra
  18. Great little motors I have 2 of them. Real nice for sneaking up on the perch
  19. If fishing where there are big northerns or tigers etc. you can use the ultra thin titanium wire (leader material) which stays stiff and keeps things spinning real well while offering some "protection" as well.....a little pricey but worth it for that application.
  20. If you do send it for repairs take the opportunity to have some carbon fiber drags put in. You won't be sorry.
  21. WTG Jeremy.....man....I know that feeling firsthand when a big one comes unbuttoned and its almost like looking in the rearview mirror and seeing the flashing lights of a police car it sucks Heck of a fish for this time of year.....and the way things have been going thus far up that way things should be really heating up in late July and August.
  22. Yes the north end ramp was clear today when I was there and they are putting in a lot of big stone on the breakwall there.
  23. Thanks for the report Gerry. Hope to be over that way soon after the perch.
  24. If the fleas are very thick in the spot you happen to fish (they vary in concentrations throughout the lakes) there is nothing that is fool proof in totally avoiding them....they even clog up downrigger cables despite the large diameter of the wire. I think in many cases they may be a little easier to get off wire than braid. As far as downriggers go I've had real good luck the past few years with the Bloodrun Sea Flee line for mono but usually any CONNECTIONS get them. They are really pesky little critters to deal with.
  25. Andy if you decide to do Honeoye it may be advisable to do it early in the season rather than later because it becomes VERY congested with weeds in the warmer water and often there is a corresponding Blue -Green Algae/Coliform problem and swimming is prohibited then (for good reason)
