The marina itself has been frozen but the lake side off the break wall has been open water all along

There have been guys in boats out at Sampson out from the breakwall right along last few weeks but from what I hear the action has slowed right down now....the same casting from the wall.

I don't know how you folks got the Boat US insurance so cheap because they just quoted me $274 on my 18 ft Whaler for "Yacht policy" and $191 for the "Boat Saver" policy.

Hi Don, Welcome to LOU. I think you'll like it here....a lot of really good knowledgeable folks willing to share information. One of the best suggestions would be to go back through previous postings on here by searching for things that are of interest to you as folks have already spent a considerable amount of time answering thousands of questions and issues so the information you are seeking is most likely already available to you on here...then "fill in the gaps" with specific questions for people on issues that you weren't able to find answers for. Good luck and have a great season of fishing.

An interesting tidbit from last nights ice fishing at the south end of Canandaigua. I was fishing alongside Scott B. the owner of Makiplastics (best plastics for panfish jigging around) and Pro staffer for Vexilar and Clam and others and we were chatting about jigging in the various Finger Lakes and we each fish Honeoye and I've fished it since the late 60's. We were both commenting on how difficult the bite can be and you get "lookers" (those fish that examine your jig but won't actually bite) that won't take the bait no matter what you use or how you use it. Scott then eloquently stated something Ihad felt for many years...he said " If you can learn to jig successfully on Honeoye you can catch fish that way anywhere. He has fished all over and we agreed that tough fishing conditions combined with perseverance teach you more than any video, seminar, or Youtube video can ever do. So when you are out there jigging your azz off but paying close attention to detail keep that in mind because the lesson applies not just to Honeoye or to jigging for that matter. The year after year of picking up on the "nuances" makes all the difference in the world and patience is the key to it all.

It remain s to be seen Jason. If a significant open water area is created and the wind continues the ice could really deteriorate. I was out on it at the south end yesterday and there were some "funky" spots when we came off of 8 inches of ice last night. I believe it was my last time of ice fishing for the season at this point. The ice can be thick enough but "rotten" in spots that are hard to detect. Once areas open up it is in large part up to wind direction and speed in terms of when it clears.

Just drove along West Lake road on way home from town and there is a lot of open water along the shoreline...Butler is totally open out quite a ways. Sucker Brook is also flowing real good going toward the launch.

Couple of Coho rigs I just set up. What do you think?

As far as the trout scene goes it seems to me that the lamprey control may at least be a factor in the differences. At one point Seneca seemed worse than Cayuga and now Cayuga seems worse I saw somewhere that an adult lamprey can account for about 40 lbs of fish (unsure whether that was lifetime or per year) Either way it can account for a lot of fish over time. I'm sure there are multiple factors involved but the levels of lamprey in the lakes should be taken into account.

How to add charging to manual-start Merc 9.9 4 stroke?
Sk8man replied to Gill-T's topic in This Old Boat
That fits with my understanding too you have to be really cranking speed-wise to be charging the battery to any significant degree. Idling and slow trolling speeds won't do anything significant to charge the battery. -
Good thing you caught the impeller situation. I'd do just one thing at a time to see if it corrects things e.g. plug check and replacement if necessary then consider other things so you'll know for sure.

I know there are quite a few things that it could be but I would first check your battery because if it is weak and is discharging when not in use it may be "marginal" for starting the engine and then after your alternator puts some juice back in it has enough to start it up more easily. Also check and clean the battery connections. The status of your plugs is also a question and for an older motor the possibility of a carb rebuild is not out of the question either especially if it has been run on ethanol gas. Good luck with it Sean.

That is the exact one I have had and it is pretty "bullet proof". When running full tilt (50 plus) I tilt the trolling motor up all the way (and I have an extra long shaft (25 inch) 9.9 -2 stroke) and as I said previously I have NEVER had a problem with it and I have fished the rough waters of Lake O as well as Seneca etc.but I frequently check the motor screw downs and the bracket itself just as a routine precaution but i have never had to tighten the bolts or anything. I have never raised it or lowered the bracket itself only adjusted the trim of the motor.

The ice never formed that far down it was about to the Hobart/William Smith dock at the furthest. The rest of the north end has been and remains a big question mark as there are some openings in the canal area on the east side and if they decide to start pulling water the whole ice shelf will be history.

Name that fish...Caught on a party boat in NJ in 2014
Sk8man replied to Senor Snagger's topic in Open Lake Discussion
The spots don't look right for an Atlantic and it looks to me that there are spots on the lower portion of the tail as well. It certainly doesn't look like a healthy fish either way with the proportionally large head and extremely slender body. I've been wondering for some time if the reason both the Canadians and US were having such poor returns to the streams if something like this wasn't happening (running from Ontario via St. Lawrence and down the Hudson to the Atlantic. I even mentioned awhile back in one of my posts.I think it is very conceivable that Atlantics and perhaps steelies could do it. On the other hand the Pacific salmon are ocean dwellers are some of the adult Chinook and Coho also doing it ? -

I have to apologize for my faulty memory The aluminum bracket and adapter plate are made by Fulton not Garelick but the stainless one on the boat was. Here are pics of the (removable) aluminum bracket and adapter plate I decided against and the informational boxes: This mount is pricey but looks sturdy - http://www.amazon.com/Garelick-71091-01-Aluminum-Auxillary-Bracket/dp/B000KOOP16

nysrx01 -I'd make sure you secure the motor real good with that slide out bracket. I still have one of those bracket assemblies in the box down cellar that I initially bought for my set up but it didn't look sturdy enough for the job so I bought the stainless one. If you hit a real big bump someplace the motor could jar right out of that slide in plate if you trailer it with the motor in it.
