  1. Nice going Jared . Good to see at least someone has good ice to work with at this point.....still a question mark around here whether it will get there.
  2. Good tip about keeping the batteries warm before use. I haven't used my auger in 18 inches of ice around here and I'm sure I wouldn't get nearly as many holes in stuff that thick but I have never needed the second battery even after 50 plus holes in 6-8 inches with the 7 inch Lazer. I've had the Strike Master and Mora manual augers and they don't cut nearly as well as the Lazer and I think it is the shape/angle of the blades that may be responsible for it. Tip: Keep the plastic cover over the auger blades when not in use to avoid cuts to clothing and/or dulling of the blades. Some folks also drill a partial hole and leave the auger upright in it but changes in weather could cause it to be stuck or wedge and dulling can occur trying to retrieve it.
  3. WTG I especially liked the poses with the carp....usually they fight like heck on light line so I'm betting they were fun.
  4. I don't know what those perch are eating but for their length they are pretty plump or else stuffed with eggs nice work!
  5. Geez....I'm feeling better already ..... I should show this to my wife it makes me look almost "normal"
  6. I guess I don't qualify for an opinion because I am worse than you....I carry 10-12 rods in the boat when I go solo
  7. When I first joined LOU (Admiral Byrd kept at me to do it) I thought to myself....I'm maybe at the advanced level but not the "professional" level thinking it was just for charter captains etc. but once I started posting and understanding the site a little better I realized that the professional category wasn't some elitist title but rather a way to benefit from the site with additional resources available as well as to help ensure that it continues. It is a very inexpensive way of thanking the LOU community and Chad for providing a great website that takes a lot of time and effort to design and maintain properly. I have designed personal and commercial websites in the past and I fully understand what is involved so it is my way of saying "thanks". I would encourage any of you folks out there (who may be on the fence) to do the same and "lurkers" to become members as this website is one of the most beneficial to our sports that I have ever seen.
  8. When I mentioned November it was just a representative date because it would not make any adaptive biological sense to have a species all spawn at the same time so that makes sense.
  9. This thread now has me really thinking.....do the lakers go to the streams looking for food after they spawn (often in November in deeper gravel beds in the lake)? They are definitely "opportunists" in the way they feed and will ingest almost anything so also wondering if they are there scarfing up on the eggs of other fish and smaller fish encountered. I doubt that they spawn in the streams themselves but at this point it is a puzzle for sure. The bait in the Finger Lakes is usually deep right about now so they may have figured an alternate way to feed. It certainly is interesting. This issue points up once again the benefit of this forum for learning....the chances of hearing about this otherwise would be about zero point crap if not discussed here .
  10. Jason - one heck of a demonstration regarding the integrity of the paint. I think once people see how great these lures actually work you'll have your hands full keeping up They sure worked well for me last season on the bows especially.
  11. For an in depth discussion look at previous post on it by searching ....it has been discussed fully previously
  12. WTG Rick .....and yep I'm jealous
  13. Safety tip: Get a float suit as an essential precaution. I know they are expensive....but what is the price tag on your life? Here is the one I and my son use which have been personally tested by both of us in ice conditions http://www.idigear.com/arcticarmor1.php It is the warmest suit I've ever experienced no matter what the conditions. I have the one with the extra lining which makes it very warm but it is not as easy as without to get on and off if you use layered clothing underneath. I have both the green and black complete suit and a jacket of the gold (yellow) and black. The green/black is great and doesn't show dirt etc. The yellow/black gets dirty very easily. There are others too such as the Mustang Survival Suit (example) http://www.leisurepro.com/p-mstdfs/mustang-survival-deluxe-anti-exposure-flotation-suit?utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=shopzilla&scpid=6&scid=scsho1404800&szredirectid=14202949529724319862510060302008005
  14. I don't currently have a Go Pro but probably will be getting one at some point. What I've been thinking is to mount either the waterproof housing or the Go Pro itself to the reverse side of my electric trolling motor shaft for shallow stuff, real clear conditions and to locate perch and then extend it fully downward. The reason for mounting it on the reverse side of the prop is to avoid accidentally turning on the prop but it would be wise to disconnect the motor anyway (I have quick disconnects on mine).
  15. Browns are also highly nocturnal and many of the big boys may be in and out before the guys fishing for them
  16. It has always been my understanding that lake trout spawn in lakes and often in deep water but I'm not a fisheries biologist either.

Nice going and heck of a nice looking fox
  18. Bob laid it out real well. When that happens you do need to be there early just to get a good spot
  19. Looks to me as though he may have been starving given the relatively large head and slender body. Probably there in desperate search for food. Certainly less common for them to be in a trib this time of year when most bait is deep in the lake although they may do it in Spring to get eggs of other fish ( I've found fish eggs in their stomach contents before along with various other things like sunfish, perch, stone cats. and once a small pike).
  20. Happy New Year 2015 !
  21. Around this time of year the bait goes very deep on most of the Finger Lakes (Seneca often over 200 ft) and I would not be surprised if you'd find it at or near the "hole" (about 180 ft area) south of the ramp at Keuka Park. The lakers often try to stay near the schooled up bait near bottom and often stay nearby for long periods at this time of year. and possibly in the deepest water between the bluffs and Marlena Point and usually hugging bottom rather than being suspended. You might want to call or stop by Fishy Business and get Gerry's take on it.
  22. I don't think Frogger missed the point ....he was looking at the situation from an "overall" standpoint statewide and was not narrowly focusing on one body of water which many folks agree has its share of problems right now.
  23. Sean - a 9.9 four stroke will push that boat fine but I would look carefully at the height it will be located at (and where) for each boat. A longer shaft motor will give you better steering ability and will handle rough water a bit better but you don't want the prop to be dragging anymore than necessary when under way full speed either. I'd measure your application (s) of it beforehand (e.g. from bracket or transom mount). I have an extra long shaft (sailboat 9.9 motor) because of the 25 inch shaft of the big motor and it works out nearly perfect from my bracket and allows me to steer without using the EZ steer connector and just the big motor but it required careful measurement before locating the bracket when the boat was new.

    Minn Kota help

Andy I have two of the 55 lbs (only use one at a time ) and they work fine on my 18 ft Whaler and I'm sure with all my stuff in it that it is a lot heavier than you'll be dealing with . It clips right along on the #5 (high) setting but I use 3 or 4 most of the time (more economical of the battery). It is great for sneaking up on the perch and "hovering" too.
  25. It will work but you probably won't get quite as many holes with it if the ice is thick especially. If you already have it I'd try it anyway.
