  1. No boats allowed on Honeoye or Canandaigua now....can't even test out my motors now before the derby.....just hope they don't pull that stuff on Seneca....
  2. I took a look at the north end today both east and west side there too. You folks that are choosing to launch at Sampson and elsewhere may luck out because the whole north end (as far as I could see) is full of floating debris today (sticks, limbs, and some logs with a lot of stuff that looks like bark and wood chips covering the area. There is a whole lot of the stuff ripping down the Seneca canal a a very fast pace (the fastest current I've seen in my lifetime (i.e. since the Revolutionary War ) It looked like about 5 mph and there were large ripples and swirls at the mouth of it and I've never seen that before either....the water is very murky but not really muddy. There would have been no way to troll today using any method at the north end itself....pretty discouraging and I don't think there is enough time for it to clear out before the derby. Sorry I forgot my camera or I would have taken some pics.
  3. The 22's are pretty close in size and action so if you find them they are just about as good as the 44's
  4. Good point about not needing full rollers for the dipseys I use mine for Seth Greens and the others for dipseys.
  5. Nautitroller... looks as though you are all set to go and in the pic it looks like you have some kind of secret weapon (left side sticking up from the boat....could it be communication antenna to aliens )
  6. Yeah it has been so long since I've heard those Cayuga boys catching anything but lampreys....I had kinda forgotten about them....sort of like going to the race track though and throwing your money at a real long shot that isn't a mud runner...and the way the lakes are right now that could be important
  7. I have some twillis but they sit in a drawer in the cellar....I've used roller tips and wire for more than 40 years and love them and I'm with Gambler as far as the reasons. I have some rods with all rollers and tip and some with just the first guide and a roller tip and they both work about the same.
  8. Sweet! your rig looks brand new Mike....you did a great job on it.
  9. Mostly black but I have a few different colored ones as well.....Tim hit it on the head for me....try to present neutrally so the focus is on the lure itself.
  10. Smelt are usually bottom oriented and deep most of the year with the exception of spawning in the Spring. Ice fishing at night especially the lights seem to draw them toward the surface or suspended below it. In the summer sawbellies will come up from the deep to just below surface in response to lights (e.g. lanterns) and even surface to catch bugs attracted to the light and this is how we used to get our bait for night fishing at the south end of Canandaigua and Keuka Lakes. If you were located directly over a school of smelt they might behave similarly ....I'm not sure because in all the years I never saw a smelt do it only sawbellys (alewives).
  11. I think I'd wait a bit on Canandaigua. It is "doable" but who knows what is floating around out there....folks I know lost their wooden furniture and part of their dock out there from their cottage so that may be the "tip of the iceberg" so be real careful if you do. Not fishing the Seneca Derby? It is shaping up to be a lot of fun....
  12. Sounds as though someone intends to do some heavy duty copper jerking
  13. We just figured you were referring to your "advanced" age Jeff Good luck bud.
  14. It is surely sad enough when someone departs unexpectedly but when they do so "missing" it is a double tragedy/trauma in terms of the lack of closure and inability to properly grieve. I feel especially bad for those folks left behind.
  15. I think Sean may have forgotten to take his meds today.....the delusions are taking over I'm hoping the southern boys bring plenty of Kleenex....for when they return home empty handed This should be a blast!
  16. Yes The lake level is over people's docks and many have been washed away and there is all sorts of debris floating around. They are getting bluegills and crappies as well.
  17. Must be a south ender...Delusions of Grandeur I'm really lovin it this year
  18. Hi Frank just to expand a bit on Ed's on target comment - The impeller basically revolves around inside the lower unit of the motor sucking water up and out the ejection port at the back of the motor (outboard) as a stream of water shooting toward the surface. The process cools your engine. They need to be replaced periodically ( different period depending on motor requirement....for my135 Optimax it is every two years for my 9.9 Johnson it is every 5 years - consult your manual. If you let it go too long you risk severely overheating your engine for a lousy $25 part. Here is what the one from my 9.9 looks like to give you an idea. The rust on it is not from my engine per se. it was from the marina's test tank
  19. Thanks guys. I had my hip boots in the back but didn't feel like messing with that mud etc. just had a new impeller put in.
  20. Thanks Ed. man....I sure do hope it clears by derby time. Hey Ed even though Kinger's head was turned in the first pic I could see he was pretty disgusted
  21. Didn't happen! Kinda like fun loving when you're a teenager.(in the old days anyway).."all ready but no place to go" I got to the launch and here is me and this is what I saw: Decided it wasn't worth sucking in all the mud and wading out to the dock so I went home and celebrated with some breakfast
  22. Better watch it Ed....Kinger might take offense to that (especially "short" and "hairy") keep that muzzle handy
  23. I sure wish I didn't have another commitment Friday....Looks like a lot of fun coming up....
