  1. I misread it the first time ....guess it pays to wear my glasses congrats DaBinsky
  2. This was the weirdest 6 lb laker and had lamprey attached as did all the other fish including salmon. His back was totally black and note the extreme white near the gills and notice the white edges on the fins. Before anyone says anything about the way he was held he was wriggling all over as I was trying to release him when the shots were taken and my hand slid upward
  3. Must have been it Mike The guy who ran things at the weigh station was the person who just came to my house and I asked him about the fish ID controversy. He said that it was first identified as brown initially and then they questioned it and had some knowlegeable folks look at it and examine it in light of comparison pics of the characteristics and also looked at the roof of the mouth (one row vomarine teeth) and determined it was a landlock so they had a close look at the fish.
  4. I want you to know these folks are trying to do the right thing.... I just received a call from the derby folks indicating that there was an error and that I am moved to second place in the Seniors division and the guy is actually delivering to my home in one hour the extra $50 and exchanging plaques with me to correct the mistake. I think this speaks volumes for their sincerity and willingness to do the right thing after they caught the mistake.
  5. They have some problems to iron out but in all fairness I think they are trying to keep it going and struggling with staffing. I was on my way to Samsen to weigh my fish the first day that I caught at 8 AM but on the way there was told by a friend that they weren't weighing fish there. Since I was fishing near Dresden I said screw running all the way to Geneva to weigh the fish so I boxed it and never weighed it until 5:30 PM and it lost nearly a pound by then.....kinda the way things go sometimes
  6. Yes on the spoon sizes. The reason I said Sutton's is two fold: a) they are silver plated and show up for greater distances in the water than other finishes, and b) they run best at slower speeds than many other spoons which I figured you may be running slower in a kayak. I think the size of the spoon and action of it is more important than the pattern or even color for that matter and silver often works regardless of spoon type. Give whatever you have a try and experiment. I usually change out every 15 or twenty minutes anyway
  7. I'm not sure what the situation was but I spoke with staff the guy running the weigh station and he said they were having a hard time finding any volunteers to man the weigh stations and that is why Samsen didn't have a weigh station. I noticed when I weighed my fish that there didn't seem to be any DEC people present that used to identify the fish as well as weigh and measure them.....and that may be the source of the problem or others as well.
  8. Good seeing you too Mike and it was cool seeing the family on board. That si really what it is all about bud. Hope we can have some luck like adesalvo had this weekend for the Canandaigua derby.
  9. You should be good with five colors about now with these water temps. Small to medium spoons and small to medium sticks as well. If you have any Sutton flutter spoons (small sized) will work with the slower trolling speed of the kayak. If specifically going for the rainbows they will hit the smaller flies from small flashers but not all that commonly with the bigger stuff. large streamer flies work better trolled with a little weight (e.g. split shot) a few feet above them.
  10. Looks like Stella is saying to herself "He didn't even cook it up nice yet like last time" Brian
  11. Thanks John only got to fish a day and a half but was a lot of fun with my son and brother on board who doesn't fish (golfer) and he knows every joke known to man. Fishstix (Stan) kicked my butt with first and second in that division Looks like your boat had a money fish as well so congrats.
  12. Nice going. I'll be there at the Canandaigua derby
  13. That is the kind of assembly line I like working on too
  14. For years I have used my vibrating cartridge casings cleaning polisher with ground up walnut shells and spoons come out looking great. Heat and plastic don't usually go well together so for most of that stuff I just cclean them with dawn dish detergent and warm water. Stickbaits don't like heat either and can become very distorted especially when left in the sun...
  15. When fishing is easy the learning curve often heads downward. The natural thing when fishing is way off is to figure you're screwing up somehow and it's YOU. Not necessarily the case and the actual reason may complicated and have absolutely nothing to do with you or what you are doing out there and it gets to all of us. We may be experiencing the usual June transition period a little early this year (and it isn't just Lake O) so hang in there
  16. Thanks Don Here is the website with the membership info: https://senecalake.org/
  17. After reading the article it just strengthens my view that the way in which hatchery raised fish ( perhaps lacking environmental awareness, or fear of predators), are being dumped during daylight hours in shallow areas of the lakes providing easy food for the cormorants and gulls is something that needs to be evaluated and changed to give these vulnerable immature, and inexperienced fish a better chance at survival and also save a lot of currently wasted money. At least no matter what the government decides the stocked fish wouldn't be as easy for those scummy things to grab.
  18. Samsen is quite a bit more roomy to navigate
  19. Or putting their canvas up or down in the middle of the ramp
  20. Good point that was the case with me in the past.
  21. You should be fine launching there pretty protected, can get to deep water fast and back off the lake in bad weather, some good spots nearby
  22. I know it isn't right in the Rochester area but if you don't find one I had this guy do it in the past and he was capable. http://www.fingerlakesboatrepair.com/
  23. You guys are too much. Yes Mike (s) fishing both derbies brother and my son with me. I think it may be a tough one but we're up for the challenge. Hopefully get a chance to see both you Mikes out there and good luck to you both Frogger you may want to check with Admiral Byrd on the donuts he likes to keep his in his live well and then forget and turn the water on :>)
  24. The issue often is sharpness of the hooks whether treble or single. With trebles the three prongs can work against each other in the hard part of the mouth/lip areas (gums) when pressure is exerted on it unless the hook gets further back in the mouth, The single has the advantage of more easily going deeper or to the side of the mouth. Orientation of the single hook on the lure, combined with type of hook point (e.g. upward facing point rather than the common downward position long needle sharp Mustad Stainless Siwash hook point). and hook sharpness will seldom lose fish. As mentioned release tension on rigger can be a factor as well as trolling speed. Take a look a some of the salmon underwater videos and notice that they frequently miss and make several attempts so it can also be possible that the fish doesn't actually grab the hook itself or may grab it in a soft tissue area that can break free. It pays to pay attention to small details like hook sharpness and hook orientation. Other than flies and stickbaits (very small trebles that don't present the same problems that large ones might) I have used the #9510xxx Mustad singles 2/0/3/0 for the last 40 plus years and seldom lose a fish.
