  1. Geez and I thought Ed busted me pretty good....good one! I'm training the dog to breath real hard on them for the next batch Les
  2. Nice going Nick....can't ask for a much better season than that!
  3. Nice going.I'm surprised you could even jig or drift in that wind today. Les
  4. Sounds good Ed.......hope that does it and you're back in business.
  5. You don't want to launch at the Seneca Lake State Park right now .....here is why.....(pic below taken last week). I'd either launch at the Chamber of Commerce (itself under construction as well but launch is "doable"), or pay a few bucks and launch at Roy's (on west side of lake Rt #14) and be close to Glass Factory Bay, or launch at Sampson. It's anyone's guess as far as depth to start....have to experiment in or out from 20 ft mark I guess. Minnows or if you're rich and can still find them...softshells or Oakleaf bugs or something resembling them in "rubber"
  6. If the finish is good on them leave them "as is" would be my advice. It is a great combination and over the years I've caught more fish on the combo spoons especially the hammered finish (and I've had and used hundreds of Suttons). Les
  7. One of the things I've been considering is shifting to some 90 lb seven strand instead of the 150 lb I now have on to help cut the blow back. I think barring a major hangup on bottom it would be strong enough (I only use10 lb max.weights) and yet cut through the water better and you can buy it in 1000 ft spools so you could probably put 500 ft. on each downrigger. I know this would be quite risky using the lighter wire with heavier weights. The one concern I do have however is whether the wire might be more prone to slipping over the edge of the pully wheel at the end of the boom. Anyone have any actual experience with this approach?
  8. And I think the price of silver is sky high compared to a few years ago. Silver can be seen from a much greater distance than chrome.
  9. I've recently been accused of having "girly" spoons but I've been using the nail polish on them for more than 30 years and it doesn't interfere with the action or impede them in any way. It is temporary though which is both "good" and "bad" (depending on whether you like to monkey). The nail polish (even with an acrylic hardener coating over it does come off after awhile but this is OK with me because if the color doesn't work real well I can easily change it (as long as I feel the action of it works OK). I had a bunch of older spoons that the finish was worn on (including Suttons) sitting in the basement a while back and decided to rejuvenate them and I've been hammering fish with them since (as well as saving money on new spoons) and I 'm not as concerned about losing them either It is noted though that colors in their element (outdoors in sunlight for example) do not appear the same at depth in water and in fact reportedly either "washout" or darken to black down deep (e.g 70 or 80 ft on down) although this may be slightly different depth wise with extremely clear water. Reportedly red shows up as "whitish" at about 40-50 ft in normal water conditions or so for example. Glow finishes themselves (depending on specifically what they are composed of) supposedly show up better at depth. Obviously I didn't do the studies but that's what the "color scientists" have published anyway. I should also mention another downside to the nail polish....daughters....they like to steal your stuff....and its usually the good "glitter" Oh and before anyone "nails me" about the nail polish smell I let it dry for a few days and then whenI put them in withmy other spoons Ispray the inside of the lid with shad scent spray I guess that's most of my "girly" secrets....
  10. Sean's timing was a little off for next yrs trout derby though....heck of a laker Congrats Sean and company!

    Seneca perch

  13. Really sorry to hear about the loss of your husband and from the sound of it a great fisherman as well. I know it is a tough thing to go through the auction but I'm sure a lot of happiness will result from it on the part of the recipients of the fishing equipment. Best of luck to you with it as well as your other life endeavors. Les

    Seneca perch

Gator (as usual) is exactly "on the money" as far as the issues involved. When I referred to sharing info I was also talking in the "general" sense and I don't share info told to me by others.
  15. Same as Tim here....it works fin in Firefox
  16. It will be a tough decision whether to fish for perch or trout on Seneca soon
  17. Sounds great Justin. I'll be doing the perch thing pretty soon here and Seneca myself so lucky I don't hunt anymore
  18. I think if I was stuck on an island with only one choice of lure it would probably be a rapala
  19. Good point Justin....I can relate

    Seneca perch

Lineman sorry you took it to heart but I was pretty much messing with the Seneca perch guys I've known for about 30-40 years....if I had any current info that I obtained myself I would have posted it...I don't hold much back Les
  21. Well I finished my lawn work about 2:30 PM and decided to give the rainbows a shot again launched at 3PM and came back in at 5:05PM . Dropped 2 downriggers at the pump house marked a bunch in 72 ft near bottom and bait but no takers again....(probably not even trout but they get ya going....) trolled on diagonal along west side and out from Notre Dame Retreat house in 178 ft water rigger down 50 ft....downrigger trips and goes slack...then all hell broke loose..rainbow taking line repeatedly and headed for bottom...never jumped. He hit a gold and silver Rebel (4 inch). When I got him closer to boat I noticed that he had swallowed over half of the lure and had both trebles in his throat so I boxed him 25 1/2 inch about 6 lbs. Trolled on....about half hour later right after marking fish right in the stream of both downriggers the 55 ft.rigger fires and I had a jumping jack on the loose...jumped twice and then headed for the boat...while I was trying to steer and take in line at same time....got him to side of boat 5 lb rainbow so took his pic and released him at back of boat..took off fine. He hit one of my doctored up Sutton 22's out about 40 ft. Right after that I was pulling in my braid rig because I wanted check for fleas (had a puke green Spinny and green fly on it behind the black dipsey. I had set the drag tight and started reeling in pretty fast when BAM I had one of the hardest hits I've ever had (with the dipsey already released no less) almost lost my balance at the side of the boat because it took me by surprise and then gone....When I reeled in my Spinny and fly were gone ....the duolock had straightened right out. Had one more release and it was a 10 inch rainbow released OK. I met an older couple taking their boat out at the ramp and asked them to take my pic with the fish and then I gave t em the rainbow...they were going to grill it when they got home Wind was up but nice time of it nonetheless. The bow I kept was colored up with a nice reddish stripe in the middle but the bright sun kinda obscured it in the pic.

    Seneca perch

I hate to say it but you may not get much valuable info on that ....the guys who are really "into them " will hardly ever say so....kinda like the stream fishing stuff.....worried about spot burning etc. Perch fishermen have always been a rather"secretive" lot on Seneca (myself included)
  23. Hey Ed, Check to see that air isn't getting into the gas line I had that one too some time ago found that the fitting itself was leaking messed up where it attached to the motor and the fuel line was sucking air at it and bulb wouldn't get (or stay hard) also replaced the bulb then My buddy suspects you may have a chunk of dirt in the carb....as much as I hate to say it he is almost always right with mechanical stuff
  24. Ed, My buddy Admiral Byrd (Bob) reminded me that Barrett's is primarily Merc oriented. Larry Japp at Roy's Marina just south of Geneva on Route #14 would be the "go to" guy for Evinrudes. The guys at Frog Hollow might be closer though.
