I've been using it for a few weeks now on 2 downrigger rods. I was able to get just about 280yds on the 47H's. It work great as an anti flea line. The only downside to itthat I've found if the incredible stretch. I have to keep re tightening my downrigger rods because of it. At first I thought it had messed up in the release and was sliding but I was able to stretch the line greatly with my hands and I've never seen line stretch that much. All and all I like it but jst be aware ofthat factor. Les

I think Ray K is right on the mark...it is probably a weight distribution problem and it happens with outboards as well. I think it can be too much weight in the back relative to the front and can also occur with too much difference in weight on one side or the other as well. It probably causes some bow lifting (maybe gradual and unnoticed) or less surface area contact with the water where the guiding chines go on a diagonal path.

Tim - Very nice walleye....good going. I spent time this morning from 4:45 AM till about 11:30 AM with Justin at Sampson State Park on Seneca waiting for the wind to die down so we could troll for trout. It instead gained strength and we realized that it was virtually unfishable from the standpoint of controlling speed and lines so we opted for an intensive mutual sharing of information and ideas across species lines and everything else under the sun and talked for hours. He sure is one motivated dude when it comes to fishing and in my view is going to be one heck of a charter captain for walleyes. Justin is the guy to go to for eyes on Otisco for sure and he is proof that doing your homework and spending the time doing (i.e actual experience) and watching, and recording data and reviewing it and "thinking out of the box" pays off. I might add that we also noted Kevin Legg's accomplishment up north in this regard My thinking about the walleye scene is quite different as a result..... Keep up the good work Tim! Les

2013 Sodus Bay Healing Waters Salmon Slam - August 3rd
Sk8man replied to TOP SECRET's topic in Open Lake Discussion
This is the type of event and the type of people that make you feel proud to be American! Incredible event and wonderful pics/descriptions that made me feel as though I'm right there. Hopefully next time I will be. A big "thank you" to all from all my vet brothers.... I know they would feel the same. Les -
At this point I'm kinda chuckling to myself as I read our responses to this interesting question...we all have our little favorite distances and habits that seem to work for us (or we probably wouldn't be as attached to them as we are). It also occurs to me that we are are a rather curious (and perhaps "superstitious") breed because we think our own systems are perhaps the last word in fishing (myself included) . It is entirely possible that another factor is at work here in terms of the distance between the lure and us and that it resembles a "random event". Kings are thought to hit lures for a couple of reasons a) a feeding response, and b) out of aggression/territoriality. At the point they are "homed in" on their imprinted ancestral spawning area the feeding response is considered to be significantly reduced if not entirely gone and the urge to reproduce takes over and along with it territoriality and aggressive defense of it...this is what happens in the streams....but it also happens before they arrive while still in the lake looking for their "home base" It is no accident that bright colored or shiny objects become their targets....anything that stands out in their environment is a potential"rival", "intruder" or "foreign object" to be attacked and both males and females respond to it. The feeding response on the other hand is often thought to be increased in that period immediately prior to spawning and while the kings are still largely "silver" and out in the lake roaming. My hunch is that a) they are in an active "looking" state and anything that is in close proximity to them and presents itself as a vulnerable, wounded, or solitary "target" that might have been separated from the baitfish school (and the action of it suggests this to them) it will be aggressively (and sometimes "savagely") hit and consumed, and b) if our lure happens to be that target operating at 8, 15, 20, 25, or 50 ft. from our boat and these conditions apply we will be on the other end of a King salmon. Many of the latest patterns and colors of lures don't resemble anything even remotely looking like their natural food but they do look foreign to the environment perhaps triggering the aggressive response while looking for food. If something about the action and appearance of the lure on the line looks suspicious or "off" somehow they look but "don't touch" and move on to something appearing more vulnerable or "right" to them. That's my theory of it all and I know that it won't fit all my fellow fishermen's belief systems but I'm throwing it out there especially for "newbies" to think about as they pursue these great creatures.

Well I wanted to fish Seneca but nobody was available to go along so I opted to fish Canandaigua. Things have been tough on Canandaigua this season for most folks including me. I ended up 5 for 5 (3 bows and 2 laker mistakes). I started at about 4:30 PM from the north end and dropped my lines starting at German Bros. in 79 ft....nothing until just north of Notre Dame Retreat then small laker downrigger 50 down over 182 ...kept trolling west side toward south small rainbow couple pounds just north of Menteth 40 ft over 240 ft downrigger small black Evil eye. When I just passed Danny's place I turned toward the east and then the wire rig with wonderbread/white fly and Deep diver set at 150 bends over good and when I started to reel him in the downrigger pops taking line.....wire rig taking line too and drag figured I'd take my chances and let the downrigger stay put with the 30 lb flea line so let him just go with it. Reeled in the wire and had 5-6 lb laker on it evidently running too deep. Let him off in the water took off like a jet. Fish still on the downrigger....reeled him in and 4 lb bow on the small black evil eye again...released and was questionable but it looked like he made it OK. Another rainbow south of the Christian Camp in 198 ft. marked him on the finder before he hit the downrigger set at 50 with the Evil eye again. The Evil eye was on the main line this time right at 50 the others had come off the slider. normally the results would not have been noteworthy (i.e. a few relatively small fish) but at least there was something out there this time and I marked quite a few fish all at that 40-50ft range out deep 190-250ft. I marked some good sized lakers too sitting on bottom in 230 ft. Here's what the screen looked like just about the time the one rainbow hit: I quitat 8:30PM. I know guys have been getting pretty disgusted so I wanted to let you know there is a little activity out there at least.

Great job Matt! As a vet I thank you for doing it and hopefully nobody would have a problem with your calling attention to it on this site because there are a number of vets on here. Les P.S. I whole heartedly agree with your statement above too. -
dre you have a PM Les

Who is under Cabela's contract to manufacture their reels?
Sk8man replied to Fish Hunter's topic in Tackle Description
Isn't it something that they don't even do their homework on these reels before releasing them for sale. I had a Convector right out of the box that the drag didn't engage....my buddy had trouble with his Clarion out of the box too. -
Frabill Pro-Formance net model 5530 48-96 in telescopic handle
Sk8man replied to RTee's topic in Tackle and Techniques
For many years (after losing my good net on Seneca) I've filled the handle with styrofoam beads and peanuts and then hot glue the handle tip on.... -

dipsy rings? smelt?
Sk8man replied to Home wrecker's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
You might want to check out the NYS regs as far as the use of any baitfish not coming from a given water being used in. I think you need a receipt from bait dealer less than 10 days old stating they are virus free) and I believe anything used frozen or dried like the alewives or herring has to be commercially packaged. -
Sweet Ed.... quite a weekend... A long time ago I was fishing two 12 leader therrmocline rigs near Kashong in over 300 ft of water and one of the rods started thumping and I figured I had a "snake" or"hammer handle" Laker on it so I reeled it in and the 3 rd leader down (approx. 45 ft.) I had a humongous bullhead....I couldn't believe my eyes... He hit a Sutton #88 no less. I probably should have asked him if he was lost but I threw him back too quick
