inexpensive way to read water temps
Sk8man replied to tlombardozzi's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Yes I have one and they are versatile . You can hook them up to your wire lines/dipseys, downriggers etc. to see the actual depth they run at as well as the temps along the way at 5ft. intervals Here is what it looks like: Suggestion - Use another fastener in addition to the one on it for security of it...because it is rather flimsy. You'll notice my home made one attached to this one -

If you are looking at $200 or less I'd go with a Lowrance Mark5xPro model. They are dual 83 and 200mhz and have good bottom discrimination as well as target separation. You mentioned the Fish ID function. It is not nearly as accurate as using the unit without it especially in shallower water. Color is a nice feature to have but not necessary or essential despite the fact that it is looked at that way now days by many fishermen..... The reason I mentioned the Pro model is because it has a speed impeller as well and that can come in handy in a number of situations and can be especially useful if you decide to troll sometime or if your gps goes out (if you rely on it for surface speed). It meaures in 1/10's mph so you can monitor drift speed as well when jigging. You can also re-examine previous screens by scrolling back on the screen. It really is a decent unit for the price and if you were to decide on an expensive unit when you hit the lottery it would serve as a good backup unit .

Just as a general comment regarding boat rigging. When you start to look at placement of rod holders, net holder, planer board masts, or other relatively permanently placed items take your time planning things out but also put yourself in the boat physically with the rods and equipment you'll be using and double check all clearances with the rods in the holders, planer boards in the out position., downriggers in each potential position etc. It can save you a lot of headaches. -

copper knots and releases

You'll be fine don't worry about it....sometimes we make it sound like "rocket science" and it isn't. As long as it goes through the level wind you'll be OK. Depending on the reel even that can be dealt with sometimes..I've opened the level wind opening with pliers to accomodate swivels in the past on Daiwa 47H's and even taken them off on Seth Green Penn rigs because the wire cuts into them. -
Welcome to LOU Dave. Hermit and Guff are certainly the jigging gurus ...especially for Cayuga and Keuka and best of all they share information freely on here. Best of luck with the jigging. Les

Kyle - Nice report and interesting point about the alewife and small brown (also potential bait at that size) being in that same range...wondering what the stomach contents would be of a fish caught near there ... -

AM or PM fishing.....some observation in 2013
Sk8man replied to reelintense's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I think you may wish to adjust the fish caught rate on the morning run (drop the 5? ). Could be that the fish feed better in afternoon/evening and even night time because of reduced bright light levels, or maybe even the sun/moon cycles. They are much more sensitive to changes to both than we are.... -
copper knots and releases
Sk8man replied to thumbburn's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
A lot of folks have had break offs with the Albright and use the haywire knot instead on the copper to leader section and then either shrink wrap it or use a small amount of clear hot glue on it to prevent potential unraveling or fraying. Backing to copper -small inline swivel. No matter what you do you should TEST out the knots because if you haven't tied them yourself...they could have been tied incorrectly despite their casual appearance to the naked eye. -
I haven't fished Owasco for a while but we used to get nice browns with the smaller version of Evil Eye spoons both off downriggers and Seth Greens where it drops off out from Long Point on the east side and south of Peterson on the west and the dropoff out from Dutch Hollow. Too bad those Seeforellen browns (European strain that were supposed to achieve 20-50 lb size in native waters) that were stocked back in the old days didn't live up to expectations....

Nick they show as links on mine but they activate fine when clicked and sound and video quality are fine. A couple days ago I was having problems on the LOU site with my postings (very delayed) causing multiple posting. May be something going on with the LOU server too. Might want to contact Chad ....just to check it out....

They do make good fertilizer if you bury them (living in the country is helpful too) but I always double bag them in heavy duty garbage bags to save the trash guys from passing out when they go to throw them on the truck
