  1. Very cool!
  2. Just a gorgeous day out there Bill but got a bit windy which is always fun solo with no autopilot
  3. Was at it again solo today for a couple hours doubled up on bows one about 6 the other about 17 inches same 300 copper and stickbait down the chute Released them both without touching them and they took off like rockets 60 ft over 80. 3.0 No fleas to speak of but some grass pods floating around. They wouldn't touch the cheated rigger or the 7 color core on a board
  4. Got my vehicle back Bill all fixed courtesy of Admiral Byrd the night before so had the itch
  5. He looked even better Mike just after getting him in in the sunlight but I was busy for a few minutes before the pic and they lose color fast. They really are a pretty spectacular fish.....wish I could have released him.
  6. Fished a couple hours today at south end solo. Caught a nice 26 inch male bow on 300 copper about 60 ft down over 85 ft. west side 2.7 mph on Cotton Cordell stick. He got wrapped up and had quite a time getting him in sideways and he was shot so had to keep. Gave him to a couple guys at the dock. Also caught a 5 lb laker on rigger 55 ft over 209 ft. on Carbon 14.(released unharmed)
  7. I hope so too Wes. I have a lot of fond memories both as a kid and adult of being out in the creeks in the Spring with a Coleman lantern and net getting them and seeing the occasional rainbow scoot out of the shallows in the light.
  8. There are still some Smelt in the Fingers but not in past numbers....I thought they were pretty much extinct here on Canandaigua but there are a few left that we have caught accidentally through the ice while fishing for perch. I haven't heard of runs in the Spring for years now though
  9. You can always rely on Wally to give good answers
  10. I think Rick has made some really good points here.
  11. rodhog has some good ones posted here too.
  12. The water temps are still up a bit from normal was 64 down to 65 ft the other day on Canandaigua. We will need a few more cold nights to get the temp below 60 degrees or so and the fleas should be reduced. They are probably the fishhook type now so harder to get off lines.
  13. These days it pays to run 30 lb Sea Flee as the main line and then leader down to 10 or 12 lb test

  15. Good ole lakers... still the bread and butter fish of the charter industry and still a lot of fun. Comparing them to kings is kinda like comparing a Ferrari to a Ford though and not really a fair comparison very different species with different characteristics.
  16. Yep that's it. Huge difference in the fishing now....
  17. We've been through these tough times with the lampreys before and with treatment the lake has come back....have to fish a lot harder and be more creative in tactics sometimes and lower expectations a bit but it can offer an opportunity to learn too when challenged to be more flexible out there and try different approaches.
  18. I don't think anyone would disagree with that word "fresh" but even in the lake I stop fishing for them when they blacken up because they seem to lose a lot of their "zip" compared with the silver fish. even the teens seem more fun. I do understand some of the landowners concerns which I saw for years on other places as well such as Maxwell and streams on the Finger Lakes. It is also a large part of the reason that farmlands are posted so heavily now verses 20 years ago. Some folks don't seem to have respect for others property and the trash situation is inexcusable.
  19. I guess in following this thread I find myself wondering 'Unless you are coming from New Mexico, Nevada or the Dakotas etc.to salmon fish for the first time why mess with the Salmon River at all when there are so many other good places to fish in New York State and fishing for the "zombies" has never seemed real attractive anyway?" It just seems that things have gotten so complicated and paying to stream fish seems to really detract from the "sporting" aspect of it all. I'm sure this is an unpopular opinion but I couldn't resist
  20. They are Anglers Pal rod holders by the way
  21. It doesn't have to be cold water, or deep either I lost a good friend who was also a charter captain and stellar bass fisherman who was fishing solo on Seneca Lake mid summer casting for bass without a life jacket on (I know because I was the last person to see him at the launch ramp that day). He apparently took a whizz and fell and hit his head on the way out of the boat. They found him in 8 ft of water. Moral of the story for me: always wear a life jacket of some sort when solo fishing.
  22. If you do any reloading the cartridge casing tumbler with walnut shell material works well. The finish does stain deeply on Sutton's and may not be re-vitalized if badly spotted.
  23. Check with Troutman87 on here. You probably won't find them any better or cheaper even used.
  24. Trailering is really about matching up the boat weight with trailer tongue weight distribution and having a wide enough wheel base on the tow vehicle and towing capacity to keep the tail from wagging the dog with smaller boats, and getting the right hull design for the boat itself depending on use or purpose . My 18 ft Whaler is much like a 20 ft boat and can be pulled by pretty much any pickup truck or SUV. I can launch it solo, go out in very rough water without problems and in the 18 years I have had it I have never had any water come into the boat from waves because of the hull design. Fishing rough water is another issue because no matter what size boat you are in when the wind is up and the waves are cranking you can't control your lure speed properly;although some may be more comfortable to be on than others. I'm convinced there are no perfect boats - just some that perform better than others at some things. After all is said and done it is always a compromise of some sort ;whether comfort, expense, purpose (s) etc. and personal preferences seem to guide that decision. Most glass boats and aluminum boats "feel" different when in them and once someone gets used to this (either way) it can be a preference or desirability factor too which can later affect "satisfaction"
  25. Jimski 2 - It is surprising that if you are truly a firefighter that technicalities are more important than human life. Apparently and you missed the point entirely of not only the thread here but the nature of your firefighting position and of the significance of the actions of those firefighters that lost their lives on 9/11, and I sure wouldn't want to be depending on you to save my butt if I was in a dire situation.
