Chris I've had very good results/life out of napa marine batteries in a similar 24 volt system.

Pat will be missed. Always around as a Tourney competitor and a valued volunteer who helped with the pen projects. His wife and family are in our thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace, Sandman.

Howard Tanner is a hero of mine. Always wanted to meet him-- please shake his hand for me if you get the chance. Not many gutty decisions being made like that anymore. So many positive changes have occurred to the Great Lakes because of his decision. I grew up next to a worthless sea of dead alewives. Time to relax the over zealous phosphorus control, pretty blue water is sterile. As for wild Chinook, they are the cream of the crop but so much of Great Lakes trib habitat is unsuitable. Time to create safe zones for the greatest fish that swims to spawn without harassment.

I'm not sure what they are called these days but the old Jensen "Hot shot" side planer that they made for rivers would be ideal for flat lines off your Kayak.

You are on the right track with the oil changes and not beating them to death. Also, if they are carb motors it is very important that the carbs are maintained/tuned so they aren't "dumping gas." I have had 3 sets of 5.7's in the past all go from 5000 to 7800 hrs before replacement or rebuild. Don't let them get hot and use ethanol free fuel whenever possible. Engine oil that has zinc(if no catalytic converter) is also a good idea. As already stated, motors that sit idle in "dock queens" are usually much more problematic.

It is way too soon to assess this years hatch, the alewives haven't even spawned yet. They would be looking to reinforce the belief that last years hatch didn't do well. As for hydro acoustic monitoring, it is still very limited in being able to measure yoy. We cause schools to skirt away when in the top 20, a large vessel is even more of a disturbance. On a positive note the emeralds are back and smelt are in the river.

Here is the announcement for those not on the Tournaments email list: The 32nd Lake Ontario Pro-Am Salmon Team Tournament out of Niagara, utilizing the ports of Olcott and Wilson, will be holding its contest this year May 20,21,22 2016. 3 full days of tournament fishing with opportunities for a 5 fish(trophy division) or 12 fish (classic division) competition--or both. For starters, once again there will be more than 100 percent payback for any money that comes in from entry fees and sponsors. More than 100%!!! It ALL goes to the fishermen. The Niagara Cup for the Trophy and Classic divisions respectively, will be offering up a separate pot of money for the winners. As of right now, the winners will receive an EXTRA $10,000 for the Classic and $5000 for the Trophy. Thats pretty darn good in addition to the entry fee purse. Rumors have been circulating that there isn't any money in this year's tournament. This is not true. For added excitement, Tournament chairmen(Niagara, Oswego, Sodus) are in the process of aligning together once again to offer an overall Lake Cup representing the longstanding tradition of events that are formatted with mixed species, no cull, observers, and the Classic divisions. Prize money is being put together for this as well. More details to come. The Niagara Pro-Am is the grand daddy of fishing tournaments on Lake Ontario.
