Bait caster over Spinning Reel?
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to FishingsFinest's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Good summary, Gill-T. The only thing I would add is if you take less experienced people fishing, the levelwind will result in far less line twist. Drifting for Smallmouth or Steelhead is commonly done with spinning rods, but often result in the angler reeling against the drag, or mistiming when they should grab line. If they can grasp the levelwind, they can crank until "butter is made" and no harm done. If they do this with a spinning reel, you will be untangling knots and cutting back. -
Trailer to Sodus Pro/Am
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Chas0218's topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
Sodus Pt is a great location for a Tournament. We look forward to it every year and the committee does a great job. -
2015 Oswego Pro Am
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to burkyboy's topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
Thanks Burky for your efforts. Always a blast. Ace, chartering is the only way to participate in all the events. Clients can be involved in these exciting events for a fraction of the cost of playing in a saltwater event. Once they do it they come back forever. Hope to see you in O-town. -
Niagara river conditions and a cold Lake O

I'm feeling a normal Spring(you know, the "new" normal). April/May= Bring it! -

This is all true Skipper, but in the 80's they gorged on alewives and there were other severe winters delaying the bug hatches. I don't think they have this all sorted out yet. It would be interesting to find out if it has had more of an affect on Altmar hatchery fish than the wilds or Canadian planted Steel.

"The man with the salmon plan"
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Legacy's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Thanks Rob. His name was much more commonplace in the 80's, yet he remains a true hero as was the late great Bill Pearce of NY. Looking forward to reading his book. I have actually been to Bear creek and the Platte river. Very cool to learn he actually stocked some from a bucket. Those dieoffs due to overpopulation on Lake Michigan described in the article, were commonplace here on Lake Ontario in the 70's. Talk about taking lemons and making lemonade. Kudos. -
Yes, when its a stick bite and they are on emeralds these fit the bill. Excellent in clear water and run true out of the box. I've heard they are doing damage on Walleye as well.

Legacy Rob, great idea and I enjoyed reading your summary. Congrats on your son joining the ranks, priceless memories will be made. I have to agree, for the most part deer numbers are down and in some areas the free flowing doe tags dont make sense. Sure in the sanctuarys of 5 to 40 acre parcels with no hunting taking place it can appear over populated, but where typical pressure is occuring it does seem the herd is down. Sean, your venting is understandable. The NYS Whitetail experience must be taken with a grain of salt. I only recently started hunting out of state, but if I had to give up one or the other it would be NY as careless behavior and blown hunts are the norm whether on public or private.

Depending when those pulleys were made, there was a short run that were more likely to experience that. First, check and make sure all the screws are drawn up evenly and tightly. If yes, they will probably swap them out. The reason it was happening was the material used for that short period of time was affected by humidity and actually swelled. This caused the pulley to "cant" to one side or the other leading to the cable jumping. As for the auto stops, I would definitely set them so the weight remains in the water as this prevents them from swinging wildly while hanging--which could result in a breakoff or damage your boat. The TS series automatically slows as it approaches the surface.

transducer
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to fisherman 57's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Yankee is correct. The Airmar 600w in both thru hulls and transom mount have served me well and are a huge upgrade over most provided transducers. -

The deer in pressured areas are starting to take chances in late afternoons now, the mornings on the other hand are ghost town. They appear to be well bedded down prior to shooting light. These observations are from heavily hunted northern Niagara county, of course in the 'burbs or in lightly pressured areas it can still happen anytime. Good luck to all.

Congrats! A tradition is to cube up those tenderloins(inner loins) and eat them right away--don't freeze them. Saute in butter or olive oil with your choice of onions, peppers, mushrooms, or all of it. Served by itself or over rice or wheat pasta. Some take the tradition further and insist you share the first meal with those that were with you or helped you.

"Pocket drives" are actually "half tunnels". The original Penn Yan boat company designed the "Tunnel drive" originally for the military so boats could be beached without damaging running gear. This led to recreational vessels being built for sale to the public as well as rescue vessels used by different departments. These inboard vessels were very popular in Maine and in the FL keys due to harbors and inlets that at times had very little water for passage. The trade off was steering at low speeds(especially in single engine models) and a slight decrease in performance and fuel economy compared to a standard inboard. The full tunnel models not only needed very little water for passage, but could often ride over submerged logs without taking out running gear. The "half tunnel" or "pocket drive" design is a compromise for necessary draft, yet in many models provides the ultimate performance and economy. Many of todays top boat builders have either recently built, or currently build inboards with pocket drives. The boat you purchased may have pocket drives or half tunnels, and that model does very well performance-wise with this design for a boat that size/weight.

Rust-Oleum Boat Bottom Antifouling Paint
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Patriot's topic in This Old Boat
Wasn't aware Rustoleum made bottom paint. My advice to anyone purchasing a new to them boat that they will keep in the water is bite the bullet and get it stripped down. Unless its been done already, you can see any blisters and then apply barrier coats. This avoids water infiltration. After that you can apply the teflon paint like VC-17 or the new West marine version. With this stuff you will never again need to sand, and it goes on like film, avoiding build up. The only time I would not suggest using this type of paint is if you will be docked in real sluggish water and will go several weeks inbetween uses. -
Don't forget guys, Okuma makes a high end model called a Catalina and its built like a swiss watch. I have never had a drag issue and some are 10 plus yrs old. For the money, the newer Cold waters and Convectors are tough to beat though.
