The alewives should be fine as long as we have a normal arrival of Spring, they went into the winter with alot of heat energy in the lake. The gobies, however, should have taken a beating boding well for Brownie anglers. Generally, hard winters create classic Spring fishing with an intense frenzied bite, the question is when.

Matt, smart play. There are several major players in the Lake O tourny scene who got started as observers. This is an excellent way to accelerate your learning curve. Warning, this can become a HUGE distraction. You will start zoning out and daydreaming about what you just saw, or about the next event.

In my opinion, try to run Ethanol free whenever possible. Some people think the only danger ethanol presents is attracting moisture, but thats only part of the problem. Even if it truly is the amount the fuel states, it causes engines to run hotter which can lead to catastrophic failure under the loads boats are under. With the way the marine industry is fighting E-15, and rightly so, what if the mix isn't perfect? Pure gas is the way to go whenever possible, the small price difference is made up with better fuel economy.

Good stuff. Wish we had a "monster mania" tourny here, after labor day. Nothing better than a box full of fangs. I know a whole bunch of guys over here who would die trying to fit that schedule in. I thought Lady O had alot of events!

Tim is 100% correct. The DEC has asked us at various meetings to encourage as many attendees as we can. A poor showing is seen as indifference. Unfortunately, when fishing is good the meetings are poorly attended and this sends a bad message at a time when the DEC is having a hard time getting funding and replacing staff. Mark your calendars for the nearest one.

Back in the winter of 86/87 it was down to the Penny sedan or the 29' Aquasport. I looked at a bunch of them. She will run through the rough stuff yet provide stable trolling. Good luck with the new ride.

My observations of what is going on Statewide or Nationwide are whether you subscribe to jumping on the "teat", and becoming just another following blindly. There are alot of similarities between the 2 respective leaders, and none of them are good. -

Nice boat Rich, is that the 27 or the 29 ? Lotta glass in those hulls as they were designed as a workin' mans canyon runner. If its the 29', what does she have for power? Very nice lines.

I can't think of anyone who has serviced more Penn Yans than Hank. You will never go back once you go thru-hull. The angle 'ducer needed on most boats changes in relation to where you put it bow to stern, and inside from the chine. Most of our troling vessels "flatten out" toward the stern, so I would install it where Hank says and with the deadrise degree he suggests.

No, he means anyone who would have the "gall" to actually own a gun to use as our forefathers did, to hunt and to protect ones own life and the life of family, not too mention collectively against the possibility of a tyrannical government. He also meant anyone who would voluntarily live an independant lifestyle in a rural area. Don't be fooled by any license decreases, it's all pandering for future votes without any real concern of the realities of the programs he's already cut despite being some of the truly profitable ones in the State. Doesn't make any sense to cut licenses a couple bucks but yet let the DEC operate short staffed.

As nice as it is to have a "bonus" slug of Kings from time to time coming from natural reproduction, hatchery contributions still rule the day. With the weather events(ice jams, flooding, complete blow-outs of streams) this year will probably not produce many wild fish. I was talking with a west coast guy yesterday, he stated they rely heavily on hatcheries there as well. A DEC staff member told me 30 years ago, "a squeaky wheel gets the grease" when it comes to fishery issues. It's time to be proactive and enhance and PROTECT this world class fishery!

Hi Bruce, It's been challenging to say the least. If its not wall to wall ice, its mud, when the ice slows and water clears its -10 degrees. We are scheduled to get back out there friday, but it doesn't look like relief is in sight for another week. The good news is the trout have been unscathed, and Feb should be solid. -

Thanks guys, thats what I was getting at. It seems the furbearers are in an upswing as well as demand. I trapped muskrats all through high school(yep should've died 5 times, LOL) in the Lake Ontario ponds and marshes. I did not want to do anything with the fox if it helped the coyote population. -
I am seeing lots of daytime activity by Red Fox around this area of Niagara county this winter. Is it true that if the fox population gets cropped down it makes it easier for the coyote to expand their population?

Very interesting. Strategy for sure. Rick, was it an oversight that the Steelhead minimum length is 1 inch over the State law but the Atlantic is right at 25" ? Also, is culling allowed for all species? Will there be definite parameters for how the culling will be allowed and watched by the observers? We are looking forward to this fresh concept in the noble port of Oak Orchard !

This is a no brainer if you are truly looking out for the "Golden Goose". It makes little sense to rely on one source, located at one extreme end of the Lake. Not only is this dangerous from a "all the eggs in one basket" situation, it creates logistics problems for delivering to the west end and still complying with temp requirements for survival. The Lions share of the wild fish are coming from Eastern and North shore tribs, and of the number of planted fish that DO survive from the West, many return to the East as they came from that watershed. Any way you cut it, Chinook should be reared in 2 locations, especially considering the revenue they provide through license sales pay for much more than what their costs are. What naysayers often overlook, the Chinook program has completely changed the face of the Lake Ontario ecosystem, even if you do not fish for them. With the Chinook somewhat controlling the burgeoning Alewife population, we have seen successful hatches of Lake Trout, Walleye, Yellow Perch, and Sturgeon.

Announcing the "Lake Ontario Championship Series-Quest for the Cup"! Ever since the original, "Challenge Cup", and all the history that went with it was unceremoniously dumped , the true spirit of Lakewide competition went away with it. I am privilidged and humbled to be asked to chair a committee of Tournament coordinators and participants who have all wanted to see this restored. Alot of of back and forth and compromise went into designing a series that honors the history of the "Cup" concept(all the way back to 1994), while embracing the new with a real emphasis on growth. Everyone on the committee, representing Wilson to Oswego, feels that our incredible fishery hasn't even scratched the surface of what potential it has in the "Team Tournament" arena, and hopefully this series is the beginning. Some of the committee wanted the format to be easier to win, others wanted it to be much more exclusive. What we came up with we believe is a perfect blend of the old and the new, and should allow newer teams to "give it a go". Thanks to some great sponsorships, a team entry to "fish the overall" will be $100. It is our intention to pay a 50%/30%/20% for the top 3 scoring teams, and due to those same sponsors we can already offer $3000 to first place! Of course, with more entrants and sponsors, this number can increase. It is the intention of the committee to be "inclusive", not exclusive when it comes to participating tournaments and teams. The Tournaments that have already committed to this series are: The Wilson Invitational, The Oak Orchard Open, The Sodus Pro-Am, The Oswego Pro-Am, and the A-Tom-Mik Invitational. A special thanks goes to:1) the Wilson Harbor Invitational $1000 sponsorship and a $300 sponsorship on behalf of the fledgling Oak Orchard Open,2) the A-Tom-Mik Invitational $1000 sponsorship and a $300 sponsorship on behalf of The Oswego Pro-Am, which is still getting it's feet back under it, 3) the Sodus Pro-Am $1000, which is a tremendous committment considering that event is only going into it's 2nd year. It is our sincere hope that other Lake Ontario events join the series. These events must be Salmon and Trout Tournaments utilizing observers, have a "No Comm" policy, and make or pledge a sponsorship to the Lake Ontario Championship series committee. A facebook page has been created by one of our dedicated committee members, with a complete rundown of the rules. Remember, this took compromise. I'm looking forward to the rebirth of the "Cup", and I want to thank all of those who blazed the trail and traveled the lake since 1994 making this such a worthwhile quest! -
