Thank you, Brian. It was unnerving to learn that they were scrambling for eggs yet again, despite all the fish that returned to that river. Any idea if the fish they took the eggs from are all hatchery fish, or was there some "naturals" in the mix? Any feeling for the ratio of hatchery to naturals that enter the raceway?

What downrigger to put on new boat?
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Reel Overtime's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I agree with Rick, and I have been extremely pleased with the latest version of the TS series Cannons. Fast, with power to spare and the auto stop is beyond compare. The rodholders stock and the dual axis options are sweet! -
Way to persist! Bad mojo/karma to waste 'em. Your detailed post probably sent a few guys out back for a few extra practice shots.

Congrats!

Congrats again, Dave! It was great to see it in person when I got back from winterizing. Reel Doc, as to the body condition around here, you have no idea. Cornicopia of food makes em hard to pattern. That deer was on corn, but all the orchards are apple-a-thons, with tons laying on the ground and unpicked. Jerry, the hunter population is probably closer to 80 to 90 percent out here. This makes it a great place to live(I call it "little montana") with multiple guns in every house and the owners know how to use 'em, but the deer are heavily pressured. If it wasn't for the inpenetrable thickets all over here there would be no deer, LOL.

WELCOME TO CALIFORNIA NY GIANTS
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to stan's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Thanks for the welcome, Stan. Should be intense! Hopefully the SF coach, a fine motivator with a talented roster, will look across the field to the other sideline and learn a thing or two about how to conduct oneself with class and dignity. May both teams come out of this injury free. -
New Hewes Craft 24' Alaskan
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Day Break's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Tom, I've owned a Lund, and know many guys down here that have them. That boat will outlast us all with that amount of use, unless of course you sink it with bounty! Just an odd rivet leak once in a great while. Triple bow plate. The Lunds and Crestliners have the ride of a glass boat and are fine choices for production boats. The beasts made of aluminum that these guys are ordering are in another league altogether, however. Awesome. -
Late, late season fishing
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Trap Jaw's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Steelies in the river. Possibly Browns and Lakers on the bar, with Lake trout season closed. Watch yourself as that area is very heavily patrolled border-wise and federal agents watching the duck hunters. -
Congrats!!! How many of us have heard, "wait to track it til I get there", great memories to share!

More Pro/Am thoughts for 2013
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to A-TOM-MIK's topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
Tom, thanks for being pro-active. I know there are lots more perch to catch. From the the start, when something that wasn't broke, got "fixed" I have been for whatever the majority wanted. If this is the route it needs to take,(your well thought out plan) so be it. Whatever happens, it needs to be run with your passion, vision, and sincerity. For crying out loud, people are screaming for results to be posted and they are nowhere to be found. What? Interest from current/potential players/customers, and we are turning our backs to them? Not good. It was brought up at the informal mtg at your invitational, are we trying to erase history? When did the historical "Challenge Cup" get retired, and what bonfire did it go in? Where is it? People need to admit the format tried last season didn't work, and return to what was recognized as prestigious, and popular. Sounds like a great plan Tom. Grab those O town and Sodus dates and run with it. As for awards ceremonies, they have never been the same since the events were moved from Fri/Sat, to Sat/Sun, with Sun being a blow day option. This did two things, it helped avoid what was intended to be a 2 day event to have to be reduced to 1 in the case of a blow. Secondly, there was a much more "festive" atmosphere at the awards on Saturday afternoon/nite, as many of the contestants were off the next day and could trailer or move boats then--instead of rushing to beat weather or darkness Sunday nite before work Monday morning. I have heard from players from end to end of the lake, both "Pros" and "Ams" alike, that the awards need to be bolstered and more of a celebration. This is welcomed by sponsors as well. Great job getting the ball rolling. -
Congrats, beautiful deer!

Congrats to Tyler and you, Dad! It was a pleasure to meet your family at the fundraiser yesterday. Were you on the ground with him, or in a stand? Magic moment for sure!

Addiction, lots of good advice from the others, I would just add that you don't need anything larger than a 30 sized Okuma for any diver application. With wire, it will hold over 1000'. Watch the classifieds on here, and remember the big LOTSA flea every Feb for your used choices.

Stan, the 49ers have THAT look, the look of a team who feels they shouldn't have been beat in the playoffs. They pummeled Eli repeatedly, and he stood in there and made the throws that counted. The Bills and Jets have some players, but both their Quarterbacks flush early. Sanchez is pretty much done and both he and Fitz should accept long careers as backups. The 49ers are the team to beat, and hopefully the Giants will get that shot in the postseason. As for the NY/NJ deal, having been there for games, I'm damn glad they play across the river, great facility with a very professional staff. I would attend more Bills games for my wifes sake if there was more than one way in and out, horrible plan.

Pete, that wasn't "ice fishing", it was what I would call, "winter harvest". I don't know what lake they were on, but I saw pics and I'm pretty sure the lakes now fished out. Anything that breathes below the surface was laying on the ice in a pile. I think I even saw a few Mud puppies. Good eats! Word on the street is there is legislation being worked on to prevent that gang from EVER fishing a single body of water at the same time again--with the exception of Lake O. I think they finally got around to finishing up filleting(mud puppies, skinning?) them yesterday.

Mature Natural Fish From The West End
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Sweet Caroline's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Ever since NY abandoned raising Kings at Caledonia hatchery, the runs in the Niagara have been weak comparatively. The Altmar fish just don't imprint well to the western tribs. The pens help somewhat with imprinting, but their main value is with a much higher survival rate of stocked Kings. I'm sure we'll see some statistics, as the DEC has manpower taking scales and some snouts down there, but before today they were pretty bored. The fish that are being caught are primarily clipped. -
Way to step up, Troy. The best date to choose without stepping on other events would be the traditional Sodus dates of the old Pro-Am. Other than that, possibly the week before if the O-town event doesn't happen. You shouldn't have to go it alone, those waterfront establishments do well with the captive audience in town for 4+ days.
