Good stuff, thanks for sharing. Good luck in the Pro-Ams. -

Yes, I feel we will have a thermocline much earlier this year. As for the lull/transition, I'm sensing the worst is over and June will be great for the 3rd year in a row.

Wilson 5-23
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to fishman08's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
So sorry to hear that, Matt. Good luck with it. -
Ok, so the Niagara co. deadline has come and gone, but remember the other 3. They are actually now, 6 Tournaments in one. Day 1- Classic box format and Trophy box format, Day 2- Classic box format and Trophy box format, Overall-the most consistent Classic box scorers and Trophy box scorers-based on the culmative scores. It should be very strategic and interesting for all at each event. REMINDER- Orleans co.(Oak Orchard) online registration deadline is Fri night May 25th at midnight.

The experienced guys will already know this, but for the newbies it's time to plan. I have never seen a warm up like this lake temp-wise, or a hot/calm spell in May like this for that matter. There will be some significant adjustments that will need to be made. Shortly, the fleas will explode like never before. We are already dealing with gobs of moss in the west end. If you only have manual downriggers, it may really make sense to upgrade to electrics this season. Cannon balls and torpedo weights less than 12lbs will be less viable than in past years-I think you will see some historically deep fishing even in areas that don't usually have it. The good news is, it should be worth it. A good crop of Salmon is out there, and their metabolism is cranked and they obviously grew more than normal over winter. All this warmth will create good blooms to feed the alewives and smelt, and the warm lake will take that much longer to cool down this Fall--continuing the growth trend yet another season in 2013. The "good ole days" are now. Make memories this year and if you hook that high 40's King, land 'em!

10+ trips without a single fish on leadcore?
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to zackblain's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Hey Zack, You are probably a few adjustments away from some success. There are some days where the fish are very aggressive and they won't make past your early presentations. My guess is you are under the fish due to too slow speed or bait selection. It is much less common to bury leadcore into the bottom than copper, and encountering derbris often is a tell tale sign you are probably too slow for the water you are fishing. If you must troll the speeds you are stating, the only blade that is optimal that you listed is the sutton. Try a very good low end speed spoon, a DW, which runs well at the upper end of your listed range. Your leader length is fine. -
The new Cannon single and dual axis holders are slick and very durable.

snap swivels what size, brand???
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to sturgeonx's topic in Tackle and Techniques
The Dreamweaver swivels are solid and holding up well. -
For the first time ever, the Orleans co Pro-Am will offer the exact same payout as the Niagara Pro-Am. With several thousand dollars above entry purse being paid out in 2 different formats, this is sure to be one interesting event! Special thanks to the sponsorship committee in Orleans county that made this happen. Key sponsors will be posted soon here and on Pro Am website.

Haven't fished Browns much this Spring, but there is an alarming amount of small lamprey/and or wounds on the Kings. As for the Steelhead, if you were to design a Spring to make it difficult to "fence up" the Steel, this would be it. They are scattered in that fertile top 10' for MILES. Enjoying that surface water loaded with immeasureable numbers of emeralds and insects, they are preparing to ruin your quiet day soon! The Kings seem to get stronger every season, and the toughest ones to land are those 5-14lbers, which are beserk and seem to love coming at the boat and trying to weave up your other rigs. I bet you are enjoying that 3rd rod this season, Tom!

Big Fish Friday's Pro-am
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Wolfhound's topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
Those are primarily run by locals, outside of the Pro Am coordinators. In some cases, there is a charitable cause or memorium. I know they are running the friday deal at Niagara, and you can sign up at Slippery Sinker in Olcott. I am not sure who will pick it up at the other three. -
pro am entry

Salmon boy, there is an option to just use a credit or debit card for people who don't have paypal accounts. Check it out and see if it works for you. -
Can you use 500 ft of wire with strong backing?
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to DJ 17's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Bazooka Joe hit the nail on the head. In an effort to spend less, you will spend more. Another issue you haven't thought about is "saw offs". When an outdown fish shoots under that wire, it will not cut it. If a sizzler King runs across other backing, especially mono, you will lose what wire you have on there, AND your diver and tackle. One way to be thrifty is to reverse spool your wire on to another reel one time before scrapping it. this will extend the life of your investment. Any kinks or broken strands, cut it before you have a heart break. -
I completely concur with Tim. They are loaded with alewives, but we did have some Olcott fish coughing up smelt. They lay in waiting outside the mature bait--the schools they lived with all winter. Today, despite our highest shot being 45', the Kings were pushing bait up to the surface. Theres been a layer in the top 10' from time to time. Now that its starting the rapid warm up, you will see it better soon. I have fished this lake since '77, and I am anticipating some incredible giants this Summer/Fall.

WHI-Nicely done!
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Capt Vince Pierleoni's topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
Kev probably has that stuff on the tourny site or facebook, but from memory I think 27lbs on the big fish and 115lbs for the top box. Congrats on the Tyee. -
