Happy Birthday, Musky!

mishandled or deformed at birth??
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to choo-choo's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I'm almost certain it is a Salmon that was caught and released, or ripped free. They have an amazing ability to heal providing the gills aren't ripped. Because they often nearly choke on spoons with trebles too large for their mouth as 1 yr old "skippers", even careful anglers will split the lower jaw removing the hook. -
Congrats! You can give my brother a call, he does a skull cap incorporated into a repro skull-sharp and clean. His name is Mark and he's on Kirk rd in Greece. Mark, 585-489-5245.

Great to have you on this forum. Although it's mainly all about it's Salmon, I have had a lifelong love affair with every aspect of Lake Ontario ever since laying eyes on it as a 4yr old. Used to sit on the dock of my grandfathers cottage at Wautoma beach and be mesmerized by all the twirling alewives. He showed me a map of all the Lake Ontario shipwrecks. It showed that the area of your recent discovery and east to 30 mile point is strewn with shipwrecks. We as anglers know that area, particularly in deeper water can be extremely volatile during a blow as several currents collide in this area. Perhaps this has contributed to the many mishaps. Congrats and kudos on your extremely interesting work.

So sorry to hear of your loss of a friend, and hunting mentor. Condolences to you and his family. -
Lots of folks out on the river outta Lewiston
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Mark Komo's topic in Open Lake Discussion
The fishing only gets better as the water cools down, Troutwise. Make some time to take your boy through the Old fort Niagara in Youngstown, only a short drive north of Lewiston. Many of my river clients come back with their wives/and or kids because it is such a magical area. -
Congrats on the Buck! Enjoy the time in the woods with your boy.

Congrats!

Pete, the last time I felt so drained after WATCHING a Giants game before today, was the Super Bowl when we played the Pats. It wasn't perfect but the effort was. LB Michael Boley is having a monster year and should get his first Pro Bowl appearance. How about cancer survivor rookie Mark Herzlich with that special team tackle strip/causing fumble? With all the injuries, the coaching staff is doing a great job piecing it all together. The schedule gets nothing but tougher, but holding the Pats to a scoreless half for the first time in 5 yrs and beating them in their home stadium(their first loss there in 4 yrs), is something to build on. Go Giants!

Happy Birthday While Yer On The Lam

Hope it was a good one, Pete. Been fighting internet service issues. Go Giants! -
Thanks guys, for all the great info. I ended up choosing the new Summit Viper SD. It's lighter than prior models, and I was already familiar with their cable system. Backpacks easily, climbs quietly. Think I have to monkey with the seat as this past weekend was the first time I used it. Also move the foot stirrups, as I found myself using the forearm climbing method as sitdown/standup made it hard to keep on my feet. A few adjustments and it will be great. The most important thing is I feel safe in it.

I think he is a perfect QB for the Big City, An "aw shucks" guy. Lets the constant criticism roll off his back, and turns undrafted guys into household names. I watch all their games either live, or DVR'ed, and he's constantly directing his changing receiving corps to where they need to line up. The last 2 years have been tough for them with WR & TE injuries and defections. Looking forward to what Manning can do with some guys he can build chemistry with because he sure can read defenses. He threw for 4,000 yds last season with guys who were moving furniture for a living at the start of the season. This being said, I was going crazy listening to all the "talking heads" on the radio and TV say that the Bills needed to draft a QB. I root for them 2nd, as everyone in my life loves them. No, you don't ever lose to draft high. So glad to see Gailey has a plan and sticks to it. Fitzpatrick may not have the strongest arm, but he is a rare find and is good enough to take them where they want to go.

Congrats guys! Never gets old.

Opinions wanted before I pull the trigger....UPDATE

Congrats Rod, that is really nice looking. -
C'mon Pete! It is SO not the Giants style, nor coach Coughlin's style to talk trash. Lets keep flying under the radar, sneak into the playoffs(hopefully with a few players back) and make some noise. I was born and raised a Giants fan, but it's hard to not see how much Gailey's turned them around. I saw it coming last season when the Bills fans didn't, when they gave a 100% for 60 minutes and took all those playoff teams to the wire. There is such a fine line between winning and losing in the NFL these days. With all the injuries both of those teams have endured, I told my brother(huge Bills fan) that it was a game between coach of the year candidates. Of course, that award will go to more hi-vis controversial types. Go Giants! But I have nothing but respect for that Bills team.

As to your question about reapplication, I would do it once a year. I have heard that its more expensive cousin, VC 18, can last multiple seasons.

Since you are going to all that work, absolutely put the VC on. It's like ink. You will never need to sand again. Only worth using it over the epoxy/tar. It dries instantly, and I have applied it in much moister, colder weather than what they suggest with great results. Not sure what percentage of increased speed you will see, but the competitive sailors swear by it. I used it for over 20 years on my Penn Yan, and when my bottom on my current boat gets blasted I will use it again.

Good stuff, Tim and Jonboat. Good accurate points. If you don't like dark Salmon you can be out of luck very early some seasons. We've caught and filleted thousands and thousands of them. The color of their skin has absolutely no correlation with the texture or taste of the flesh. The coloration always appears in Males first, and can be different at the same time in different areas of the lake. The color darkening has everything to do with the Kings spending more time in warmer water. Think ripening. They are acclimating to the warmer lake temps as they spend more and more time in nearshore water, preparing them for the tribs. The tribs are often still too warm for spawning when the Salmon are ready(and of course, the males are ready sooner) so they move in and back out repeatedly testing the water around and in the harbors. This is part of the "staging" process, and lots of good fishing for hard fighting fish takes place. Now if the Salmon must spend lots of time in warm water(65 degrees plus) due to a warm fall or lack of rain, the flesh will get mushy and take on a white color. Various cooking techniques can make the Salmon still desireable tablefare, especially smoking. These same warmer water temps can rob some of the Salmons fighting ability, but trib Salmon in cooler tribs fight valiantly where there is water depth for them to do so. Think about it, in most Salmon fisheries river fishing is mostly where it all takes place-like in Alaska. We are very fortunate here in the Great Lakes that we can experience the Pacific Salmon's fury and stamina out in open water.

It does change and breakdown, but not in the way you are thinking. The change would be in strength, as it seems to "rot" from being wet/dry and in the Sun over time. This would not cause it to "fish" any different though. My guess is that the two different setups have a different leader length, material,or LB test. Check that closely.
