Cell phone carriers and service strength on the lake
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Misty IV's topic in Open Lake Discussion
My experience with Sprint was dismal. Verizon has given me coverage in most areas of the lake. -
The reason I was given for it being only a 1 day event, was so the results were 100% based on each teams scouting and performance. The feeling is, teams can adjust based on "what and where" from day one. I guess this has some merit, but any other major fishing competition isn't limited to 8hrs. The BASS master classic is 3 or 4 days. Of course that wouldn't work here but certainly 2 days allows for multiple challenges and adjustments. With a 2 day event, you get TWO "night befores". No one is suggesting ruining the "bash" either. 2 day events should be Fri/Sat, with the Sat nite banquet and Sunday only used as a blow day. Currently, everyone is "beating up" fish on Friday already. Why not have them count in the competition? Certainly doesn't make sense to make Friday a "3 King event". May as well make it another Tourny day, as everyones "hand" will be shown. This is why some of the guys are suggesting a multi-species event for Friday. If it remains a 1 day shootout, then I think the mutiple species concept is the best way to have a second competition on Friday. No matter what, Team Thrillseeker will be there. Kev has "raised the bar" with his well run event. Our position on this is the same as all the topics discussed--whatever the MAJORITY wants is what we want to see happen.

Mid September Fishing
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Organized Slime's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Some of the best fishing, even for mature Kings, takes place after Labor day at both Oak Orchard and here at Olcott. The traffic drops immensely. Even with ideal conditions for an early run, not all mature Salmon stage or enter the rivers at the same time. Mid Sept is still solid. -
Anyone using Okuma Catalina Line Counter reels?
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Shorthanded's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I have used Okuma Catalina LC reels in the 30 size to land thousands of Salmon and Trout. Yes I am Okuma Pro Staff, but if they weren't reliable I would not use them. The drags are the best in the industry, and I have not had a counter fail yet. The clickers will wear out, but even that is being looked at for improvement by Okuma. -
Kev knows how I feel. an event of this magnitude and prestige should be a 2 day tournament. Lets do a vote on this. Then we can decide if we want a derby type of thing on Fri if the players want it one day. Either way, yes an increase in entry would be worth it. Whatever happens, we don't need another "big fish" friday.

Just wanted to report all glitches have apparently been resolved. The earliest production runs of these utilized the wrong sealant around the keypad, allowing moisture to enter. This created an electrical shorting problem, and of course, erratic performance. The commitment to excellence that I experienced with all departments involved in this correction was refreshing. I have experienced 3 months of day to day trouble-free use and they are everything they say they are. Fast, repeatable, fully adjustable fall rate, and QUIET. The rodholders are the best design I have ever used.

Older style-electronic, very good working order with two brand new caps and a set of wires. First $70 takes it. Came off a 454 GM.

Wanted to post this here so it would get maximum exposure. While waiting on my engine to be rebuilt, I looked for things to be replaced as needed. I found several fuel lines that had blistered since the survey in April 2010. I did some research and found out that although they were not leaking gas or gas vapor, they were compromised by--you guessed it--ETHANOL. What happens, even in quality USCG approved lines, is the ethanol "migrates" through to the outside, eating whatever it can. On rubber shielded lines, this will create a blistering look, almost as if it was near heat. Thanks to the NAPA in Medina, I found a great place to have marine fuel lines for either gas or diesel made while you wait. The place is in Batavia, NY and is called Upson-Maybach, 662 East Main st. Hope someone sees this that needs to and avoids a fire or explosion.

Just wanted to acknowledge some people and businesses that deserve it during my very trying mid season blown motor. The Sodus Captains were class acts offering assistance and keeping an eye out when I couldn't be there. Krenzers marina was very understanding of the predictament, went the extra mile during the ridiculous heat and humidity. Thanks Tim, Bob, Richie and mechanic Teddy. Teddy was perfect for the job, labeling everything and being careful not to damage anything else in the process. He helped keep my blood pressure in check. Farmers auto and marine engines in Webster was neat as a pin and turned the job around fast. Thanks Dan. Thank you "Borderline 350 Bill" for your wisdom and guidance. Thanks goes out to Danny Evans from Wilson for all his help. Nick "synergy boy" Glosser, thanks for all the ram-rodding around. An incredible source of motor wisdom, a special thank you to Rooky brother Kevin in Oswego. He and his brother are true professionals. And finally, thanks to all the friends and anglers who sent emails and texts offering help and showing concern. The Lake O fishing fraternity is a great one.

Wow, that is awful. Beyond a criminal act.

Sandy Creek Shootout
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to keith's topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
Congrats to Trout n About and all the winners, good job! -
The 1 percent missed may be the "official" number, but I got that 15plus percent figure from very respected and dedicated DEC members. As for the 4yr olds not being clipped yet not necessarily "natural", that is true. There is also a few 5yr olds that can possibly exist. In any event, although interesting, whatever the findings are in this study we need each and every one of these "put, grow, and take" fish, whether Stocked or naturally hatched. There are more and more warm water predators cropping them off every year, and the anglers on both sides of the pond get more and more proficient every year. We saw incredible schools of bait in the west end once it warmed up in late spring. In late June, the Toronto area was loaded with bait. In early July the bait in the Oswego and Sodus areas was the heaviest observed in years. Just this week in the Olcott/Wilson area, we were snagging bait on our rigs because it was so dense. Heard a few reports from Wisconsin that the bait was so dense recently that the anglers were having trouble pulling fish. No matter whats happens, I will always recall a quote from a past DEC official--" Alewives are so adaptable and resilient that they will be in Lake Ontario long after we are gone from Earth." Yes we must take notice to Lake Huron, but historically the Great Lakes have always been different lake to lake.

Great thread. Unfortunately, I have heard they are admitting at LEAST 15% are being missed by the trailer. Also, I learned that who operates the trailer is critical as well. What no one can answer is to what extent mortality increased in their first year by "lopping off" that adipose fin. I do believe they do not need it, but it would seem to be an easy place for infections to start. I also am watching this closely. The constant preaching that the baitfish are down when in fact there is much evidence to the contary is very disturbing. The King Salmon is the solution, whether you are running a charter business, trying to enhance the economy, trying to restore native species(driving down alewife numbers drastically improves yellow perch, walleye, and lake trout hatches. Atlantic salmon reproduce better with a varied diet than when only foraging on alewife), or providing a greatly improved and unique angling experience for recreational anglers. How about that, a reason to reside or visit NYS!!!

I just found out the the obit for Capt Bernie Klimczak appears in todays Buffalo news. Bernie was a fixture out of Oak Orchard in the "discovery years" of the late 70's and 80's. He brought experience from the fingerlakes and lake michigan to Lake O and was best known for his Miller spoon programs. He always lent a hand mechanically, and I saw him bail out many a paid mechanic. He operated Oak Orchard charter service at first from a bridged Silverton, and then from a 10 meter Trojan (which I believe is the "Maverick" boat today). He saw the future, as even in the 80's he said we would one day raise our own Chinooks like his friends in Owen sound did. My favorite memory was when he had a glimmer in his eye as he asked me to accompany him in his paddle boat to try and catch Chinooks during the October run. We went 2 for 3 on ping-a-t's. He retired down to Florida several years ago, as he and his late wife had already spent winters down there in the Keys. He will be missed by many.

Fleas

He's too busy gazing at his pics of his turkey harvests! -
Had some recent inquires regarding rumors swirling around the last 2 Pro-Ams entry deadlines. I delved into it and the deadline has been extended to Monday June 27th, 5pm. You must enter online or make a phone call to 315-349-8260 to make other arrangements. The new "Super Calcutta", which has been fortified by generous sponsors, should return the prestige and camraderie that these hotly contested events were once known for. The prize structure will be boosted by requiring teams to abide by the "No Comm" agreement, which is required to fish for the extra prizes. This will payback considerably more than what will be collected, so most certainly everyone will sign. See you at both events.
