Salmon genetics - something to think about
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Morgan-E's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Big bounce back Spring for Emerald shiners. There are large clouds of them in 20--40 fow right now in Western basin. This is good news. All young Salmonoids get a good bump eating these early in their life and Coho, Browns, and Steelhead eat them throughout their life. -
Salmon genetics - something to think about
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Morgan-E's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Definitely makes a lot of sense. We look at thousands of stomachs each season and it is definitely not a bait shortage. We most certainly have lots of early maturing Salmon now. No complaints -they fight and eat better than ever. I appreciate the work you did on this Phil. -

Approx 100 hrs on these. For a big block 454. Used only until the Rochester carb was refurbished. The intake is a Performer 2.0 and is aluminum. The carb is a 4 barrel marine model. I have the mounting wedge as well. The intake is $125 and the carb is $200. Take both for $300. -
This annual event is a very real Ladies fishing tournament with a fund raising theme. The benefactors are chosen for their work with Womens Cancer issues/challenges. The first 2 years approx 5K was raised for Mary's Wig Room, and The Breast Cancer Network of WNY respectively. Last year, due to great participation and generosity over 10K was raised for "Look Good Feel Better". This years benefactor chosen by a committee of volunteers is "Hope For Two"--the pregnant with cancer network. This years date is Friday August 16th. Competition ends at Noon with the awards, food/after party/chinese auction to follow. Teams of 2 to 6 ladies can register with their own boat or inquire about being placed with one of the volunteer boats. The entry fee is $250 per team. Any correspondence please direct to: For sponsorship or donation info, list of rules, and to register go to reelinforacure.com For updates visit facebook @ reelin' for a cure. Having a brother who is permanently disabled and in a wheelchair, there is much more to it than you think. Yes, lots of liability issues to consider. That being said, I know of two Lake Ontario ports that are working on getting wheel chair lifts installed. I think this idea is just ahead of itself until lauches and marinas get the proper equipment installed. Getting some people out on a smaller scale successfully first, before putting together an event would build interest and be a better idea. Many of the dedicated charter operators on Lake Ontario have had individuals aboard with various handicaps. It takes great care from both the charter operation AND the party that brought the individual to ensure their safety and comfort onboard. It can be done, but with all the unforseen challenges Lake Ontario and Salmon fishing can dish out my suggestion is to take it slow. In some cases the individuals do not know they have hurt themselves until afterwards. Depending on the handicap, they cannot protect or steady themselves like most people can. Start by looking into some of the piers that may be handicap accessible if you and your point person are determined to have some form of a competition. Much easier to monitor everyone and help is much closer.

Lake Ontario Fisheries History Lesson
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to RUNNIN REBEL's topic in Open Lake Discussion
It was a priority at that time for NYSDEC's Bill Pearce to create an exciting Lake Fishery and give the entire south shore an economic shot in the arm in the process. Of course this wasn't as bold as what Tanner did blazing the trail. He was "all in" however, and not the least bit ashamed about the Sport fishery it created, the economic benefit or the quality of life improvements it brought. -

2019 Niagara County Pro-Am
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Tourneygirl's topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
Thanks Penny for keeping this Tournament running. This is the one that started it all. Your father was instrumental in bringing this event to Lake Ontario in 1985 after seeing the format was popular in Lake Michigan out of Ludington/Manistee. The tribute is fitting. The fishery has changed so much, in the mid 80s Pro teams were allowed 20 fish, and winning catches were made up primarily of large Lake Trout. Your father, understanding the restoration effort of Lake Trout, was way out in front of changing the format to allow far less Lake Trout in the creel. This led to the tournament becoming primarily a Silver fish event, and making all participants better anglers. -

It has been my privilege to be a part of a decision to rename the Oswego Pro-Am, and to be added to a newly forming Rules/Decisions committee. It is our goal to restore the prestige and participation to this classic event. Many exciting changes are being discussed including a two tiered entry fee for Pros, allowing entrants the ability to decide at what level they wish to compete dollar-wise. The new committee will still have a great local representation, but also consist of members from other ports. There will also be a special prize for the top scoring Charter boat/Captain who is fishing the event in conjunction with running his daily charter. This event will continue to be 1 of 3 tournaments utilizing the 2-day classic scoring format as it has in the past, and will also continue to be 1 of 3 Pro-Ams used in the lake wide Challenge Cup chase.(Niagara,Oswego, Sodus) Committee members will organize raffles and fundraising efforts that will run before and during this event, benefiting a worthy organization/cause(TBD) in Kevin's honor. Much thought was given before this name dedication was made. Kevin was a pillar of the Oswego fishing scene, both lake and river, and did fish the Pro Am several times. He was a part of a winning Pro team("TK") in 2007 and 2009. He loved Oswego and the fishery as much as anyone. The Am division has remained popular and no major changes are being planned. Please look here and on FB for more updates as they roll out. For now, the 2019 dates are July 13th and 14th, with the Captains mtg the eve of July 12th. The popular "1K a day" for largest King Salmon will be held that week July 11,12,13,14. Save the dates and looking forward to seeing everyone and helping the local organizers with this highly competitive event.
