Agreed. Guys running dogs will tell you the same. All of a sudden they'll start killing multiple males out of 1 wood block in a weekend. All of them chasing the same hot female. Amazing how the switch flips and all of the sudden they can't resist a howl. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
Often while strictly targeting coyotes my sets will be as long as 45 minutes this time of year and even longer if something leads me to believe I have a dog interested. Early season sets will be much shorter. As short as 15 minutes on a small wood lot "fox spot" and maybe 25 minutes when targeting larger areas I know hold yotes. March is by far my favorite month to call. I almost exclusively use coyote vocals with lots of single female howls with long gaps of silence in between. Your spot could very likely be 1 set, it may be something where u could do multiple sets. It all depends on how it's set up. Is it surrounded by fields? Is it something you can only target in certain winds? Is there open land in the center somewhere? Do you plan on hunting in the actual timber? When I say I did 7 sets last night I mean 7 different properties, run and gun, get back in the truck and move to the next and out of almost 100 different properties we have to hunt most of them only get hit 1 or 2 times the whole season. New spots and dogs that haven't played the game and aren't constantly harassed certainly make the job easier. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
And here i am with the night off and im sitting inside because its snowing like crazy out there and I'm a pred-diva. Lol. Way to get it done! Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
The wicked lights are awesome. They are what I used before I went thermal. 403ic for scanning and an a48 on the gun. Great quality and good mounting options. I honestly prefer the smaller a48 as a shooting light over the big 402 or 403. You can't go wrong with their products. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
Ty. Last year we killed a few more than that but skinning and salting was a learning experience for sure. Ripped a couple fox tails in half and destroyed a couple faces getting it right. This year I've managed to put up 12 of the 16 foxes and 7 of the 12 yotes so far. Couple yotes had mange and a some foxes were just blown to hell but most holes aren't even noticeable once it's done no matter how big they were. My feb work schedule really sucks but im going to focus hard on coyotes for the month of march. Hoping to knock down 10+ in those last couple weeks. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
2016 season Mink and moyle order came in today. Did 10 pelts last season, it was a learning experience for sure but they look pretty good and feel amazing. This year's pile is already 3x this size, can't wait. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
Spent the weekend hunting the fox pro bark at the moon event. Awesome time once again with a great excuse to get out for a couple long nights. Did 16 sets Friday night with 5 reds and a grey to show for it. Started the night with 5 straight blank sets on some really good stuff but then killed fox on 6 of the next 7. Saturday night we focused on yotes and smoked one the first set even tho it took 2 shots as the 1st shot splashed on the shoulder bone and it got back up. I'm about done with .204 for yotes. 3rd set called in a pair perfect and I whiffed on a moving target in tight and then made a great running shot to make the save. Then I made the mistake of getting greedy and focusing on the 2nd dog and it cost us. Off to the races the 1st one went. Fml. Wasted an hour plus looking for that dog and then did a couple sloppy useless sets in the mud. Finally got back on track and managed a couple more foxes for the night. All said and done we managed 8 fox and a yote good for a top 10 finish anyway. Fun times as always. Vids below from many of our kills.
Then I'm fine I'm sure as long as it's legal in that state. I'm a long way from retirement so I'm sure a lot will change by then. Sadly probably for the worse. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
I've got a useless tin badge that exempts me from all the NYS bs thank god. As it stands I can only sell/transfer them to other law enforcement officers and If laws don't change I'll have to modify or surrender all of them at retirement some day. How sad is that. I'd love frozen ground but doesn't look like we are gonna get it. Fields up here are springtime wet. Went and bought new muck boots today because I found a leak in mine jumping a ditch last week. Don't want to do 2 marathon nights with wet feet. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
I'm in. Will be hunting northern Orleans and Niagara county. Hoping to improve from the 6 foxes we managed last year. Hopefully wind isn't awful and MA nature gives us a hand. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
Lol. U guys must be looking at something different than I am. Skin that yote out and put those skulls side by side. The mass on that right skull is insane. A 50lb yote has a big head but it's still nothing when compared to a 120lb+ wolf. Here is a 48lb male skull compared to a 33 lb female. Definitely some serious differences in teeth size and mass but still would fit nicely in a wolf's mouth. Lol Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
Been tough this last week. Last 10 sets have been empty for me. Heard yotes on half of them but haven't seen a fox or yote in last 10 sets. Tonight and last night I hit some really good stuff too. They just won't come play. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
Used 204 last year also and killed a pile with it. I'd say about half the time I end up with a mess and half the time it's a perfect pinhole with no exit. Edge of body near misses are always a mess. The 35 grain bergers seem to have less exits than the vmax. If ur shots are close and u want perfect furs shoot a 17hmr or a 22 mag. The 17wsm is a badass round also Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
My days of worrying about fur friendly are done. Skin it out and sew it up when it comes back from the tanners. It looks worse that it is usually. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
It's all shot placement and distance I've found. Gut shots or edge of body and ur gonna have a mess. Chest shot or square into the rib cage usually doesn't exit. It's the exit wounds that leave the mess. Long range shots (150+) almost never exit. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
Took "Da Butcher" (for those who know him from the tourney scene), out for a couple sets last night behind the thermal. Had lots of yotes sounding off but none that would finish. Great conditions and I should have hunted longer. Got video footage of a nice fox but forgot to teach Justin how to use the focus knob on the scope so it's a little blurry. Great coat on this one until you looked at its tail. Fml
