Trolling with spoons?
iiwhistlerii replied to brent fingar's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
Just curious Ivan. How big? Also have u had success using the bk rig anywhere else besides the larry? -
I started with store bought crimped leaders from companies like musky innovations. When snagged up the leader almost always broke at the crimp. II went through the same thing with multiple leaders and the crimp was almost always the weak point. I'm not saying they would have ever failed on a fish but I don't think my leader should ever fail before my 80lb braid snaps. Imo the best store bought fluoro leaders out there are from stealth leader company. They are nail knotted and then the tag end is crimped. These leaders never snapped before my line in a snag and the only failure we had with them was being bit off, twice with the 150 lb casting leaders like I mentioned above. For my fluoro trolling leaders I use today I only use knots and the weakest point in the setup is the 80lb braid.

I started as a die hard fluoro guy and would have argued with anybody that told me it wasn't bite proof. 2 years ago my fishing partner was bit clean off jigging a tube with a 150 lb fluoro leader. That day I decided I wouldn't use fluoro leaders for casting any bait i felt a musky could put down its throat. The next May I was casting a phantom softail for pike and using up the last of my short casting fluoro leaders and had a fish bite me clean off shortly after a hookset. If you are using a small lure or a lure that the leader lines up with the bait on a pause (glidebaits) those teeth can and will cut through fluoro like nothing. That being said I continue to use 6 ft tied 100lb fluorocarbon leaders for trolling on lakes like Chautauqua and st. Clair, don't trust crimps, when we jigged with fluoro and snagged up the crimps almost always failed before the 80lb braid or actual fluoro snapped, that's not acceptable to me. When I'm on waters where I'm slamming bottom like the Niagara I'll stick with hand twisted 174 lb single strand steel. Today for both casting a jigging I use 174 lb haywire twisted single strand steel with spro swivels and number 5 stringease snaps and have never had a failure. Leaving a lure in a fish with fluorocarbon isn't cool and imo using anything less than 80lb fluorocarbon trolling is just irresponsible.

You should really try some of the new braids that are available. I was once a die hard power pro guy but now I'm convinced the only people still using it either just don't know any better or are getting paid to use it. Suffix braid is smoother, rounder, stronger, smaller diameter, casts further, holds color/lasts longer and just all around a better product. I jig the niagara and could always break a snag free by thumbing the spool with power pro. With suffix I have to use my anchor cleat to snap it most times. Give it a shot, I personally prefer the original braid over the 832 but both are world's better than power pro I promise. I'm talking 80lb for muskies and I also rigged up my nighttime spoon chucking rod with 30lbs suffix a couple years back and I love it. I will never go back.

Spring Trolling Advice Out Of Olcott
iiwhistlerii replied to JeffM's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Stay away from inside of broken riff raff piers just east of harbor piers and you'll be fine with rocks if u stay deeper than 6 fow between hopkins and keg. I'd use your 9.9 kicker and your electric just to steer if it's bow mount anyway. Target speeds for us out there are 2.2-2.8 depending on current direction. -

Spring Trolling Advice Out Of Olcott
iiwhistlerii replied to JeffM's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Been out about a dozen times already this year out of olcott and shallow water bite has been hot almost every trip. Avg between 30-75+ bites off the water by 1030 am most days. We usually quit when all 50 release clips make it to the boards but a couple days that happened by 830 so we brought em in and re set. Been fishing between hopkins and keg with a 6-8 rod spread, 6-10 fow doing well in every color water u could imagine except pure mud pockets and gin clear stretches. Lots of doubles, triples and a few quads with browns and cohos making up most of daily catch but lakers, kings, smallies, steelies a couple nice Atlantic's and even a pike mixed in. Top baits are jr. Thundersticks, rapala f9s, j9s, challengers and just about any shallow stick that looks fishy. They definitely key in on a particular action and color most days depending on current direction and water color so it pays to vary the spread. Good luck man, it's def hot out there right now. -
Definately make sure the budget includes room for toys. My 36v 101 terrova with spot lock and I pilot has definately helped me catch additional fish. I have an hds 5 on the bow and a new touch 7 on the console and having GPS and sonar up front while casting and structure scan while trolling is an amazing advantage.

https://buffalo.craigslist.org/spo/4356008366.html I have this same boat and its a perfect set up for musky anglers. The front casting deck is like a football field, rear deck is sweet set up for 2nd angler and with a traxtech system and down east salties its a well rounded musky machine. This boat looks super clean in pics.

What happened to Brett's Place
iiwhistlerii replied to bassman69767's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I ordered 2 cheapo heavy action shimano tdrs for musky trolling from bretts eBay store back in October. In November I spoke with someone on the phone that assured me there was a supply problem and they were on the way. Well I waited too long, eBay doesn't do refunds after 45 days and brettsplaceonthebay stopped answering emails and the phones stopped working. Last email I got was a mass email to over 200 people that he owed money/product to saying time was needed to sort things out. Too bad I ended up eating $75 for being a patient guy. -
Niagara R. mud vs night fishing question
iiwhistlerii replied to BP Swing's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
They definitly don't rely on just vibration at night or in the mud. Color is very important while night trolling the Niagara. I have a few colors that just won't produce and some that take most of my fish. Same thing with Jigging or trolling off color water up there, lure color definitely makes a difference so they can see in both situations. -
Niagara River Musky Guide Recommendations?
iiwhistlerii replied to Jammer's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
That being said I've spent 140+ days chasing muskies on the Niagara in the last 3 seasons with 160+ fish to my boat and 1 trip with Larry produced the biggest musky I've personally seen here in wny. He's your man if u want a chance to see lake Erie Queenie. -
Niagara River Musky Guide Recommendations?
iiwhistlerii replied to Jammer's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
Larry's fall harbor trolling program is your best opportunity at a true giant here in wny but it is certainly not a numbers game. Most days you will go fishless but if a rod fires chances are it will be a giant. His avg catch is much larger than anybody else out there. If your looking for action and to fish the actual river itself and not the harbor then cinelli is your best option. You will be dragging live bait and primarily spend the day fishing 1 of 2 drifts near strawberry island but chances are you'll encounter multiple fish with most being in the 35-45 inch range. I believe Ted Kessler also does some limited musky trips each fall and will drag red October tubes through those same drifts as well as a few others if you have an ontario lic. Like I said not a lot of options, with the fall winds coming in to play on a daily basis the Niagara is feast or famine. -
Niagara River Musky Guide Recommendations?
iiwhistlerii replied to Jammer's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
Casting, trolling or live bait? Numbers or size? Only have a couple options with way different approaches. -
The first advise any responsible musky angler is going to give you is to be prepared with the proper tools for the job. 80+lb braid, quality leaders and sharp hooks are a must so when ur trophy does hit you have the best shot at putting her in the bag quick without overstressing the fish or even worse leaving a bait in her mouth. Release tools are just as if not even more important, a huge net like a frabil bog kahuna or Beckman magnum finsaver are a must. Knipex hook cutters will save a fishes life at some point during the season. Keeping yourself safe and minimizing release times by having an assortment of jaw spreaders and long needlenose pliers on board will hopefully have you prepared when the time comes. If you can attend a Niagara Musky Assosiation or Muskies Inc 69 meeting and you will find plenty of experienced anglers happy to share info and get you started. If put a few newbies on fish in the last 2 seasons and I always make them purchace proper release tools before I show them anything. Good luck out there, catch a slob and let her go!

Larry, Cullen and I have been doing really well with phantom softails and small Leos. I did lose my lucky softail to a big toothy on Sunday tho. 150lb floro sliced through like butter, twice is enough for me, I will only use floro for trolling from here on out. I'm guessing the fish hit head on when the bait was on a pause off to one side, the leader was prly lying right along side the bait and the hookset put it through the shredder. Only a couple tigers but plenty of pike to 35" or so. -John

Requires a "tool" to be detached. In the state of California that was enough to be considered a fixed mag and was a loophole around the law. I'm not sure if NY has worded our law differntly enough that it would be any different here. If so an ar15 with a bullet button could not be considered an assault rifle and I can build one with a pistol grip, adjustable stock and all the evil features I want. Just have to get quick at detaching mags with a bullet. [ Post made via Android ]

Canadian Musky season ends on the 14th.
iiwhistlerii replied to jimski2's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
Where are they launching from? I was out yesterday in Canadian waters of the upper river. Saw the usual nma musky guys but all stayed in Canadian waters and had launched from Sheridan. [ Post made via Android ] -

It's funny u mention Wellsville. I have a ton of family from wellsville with a lot of land between there scio, whitesville, independence and Andover. for the last 7 or 8 years they all swear they have big cats roaming the property. I always give them sh!t about there stories but they are all pretty certain there's at least one cougar down there. [ Post made via Android ] -
Great fish! Had a great season on the Niagara. Caught some great fish, able to come in contact with a few monsters and met some great new people throughout the season. Still a couple weeks before I give up on teeth for the year. Hopefully we're blessed with a couple more nice days so I'm able to jig Canadian waters on the upper again before it ends. Either way I plan on pulling some big baits around in the lower hoping for a super tanker to make a mistake. Fishing the NMA Henning memorial tourney in the lower tomorrow and hope to take advantage of the warm days forecast for next week. To anybody lucky enough to make it out again in the next two weeks, good luck!! Catch a hawg and set her free!! When is the next muskies inc meeting? [ Post made via Android ]

So here goes my plan for fishing tommorow........need motor
iiwhistlerii replied to Kuba's topic in This Old Boat
Have had this problem twice with my 2001 60hp merc. 1st time it was getting low voltage because cables were dirty at battery terminals. Cleaned them up and was good. 2nd time was just this past season, plenty of voltage but was still sticking. Hit the shaft of the bendix with a tiny spray of wd40 and its been engaging immediately ever since. My motor is very clean so it must have just taken a tiny bit of buildup to allow it to stick. The day the problem started I was able to start up with emergency pullstart and then Figd out if I tapped the bendix with a pair of pliers it knocked it loose enough to engage a couple times. It been since June so it seems the wd40 was a permanent fix. [ Post made via Android ] -
If its been 2.5 years was it before or after his house fire you dropped of your fish. Just wondering if it burned up. Seems Paul has had some bad breaks these last few years. [ Post made via Android ]
