  1. From experience, I'd immediately replace both knots with inline swivels. Use a haywire twist with shrink wrap on the copper and whatever knot you prefer to attach the backing and leader. Slippery sinker has the inlines and shrinkwrap. I've had albright knots fail on copperr too many times.
  2. S Adware fewe
  3. We went 18 for 24 today at Wilson. Two steelies and the rest kings. A lot of five to twelve lb fish. Biggest was 25+. 100 to 350 FOW. Try both east and west of port.
  4. Nick, Got to love those props! Was this a spur of the moment video?
  5. What they said. http://fishdoctorcharters.com/videos/video3W.html
  6. Nice video Nick! I've had real problems with the copper Albright knot failing. I think the copper eventually cuts through the other line. That's why I always use inline swivels and shrink wrap. Are you not seeing that?
  7. If a fish hits your slider, it will usually just bounce the end of the rigger rod a lot and not release the line from the rigger release unless your release is set light or it's a big fish. When you see your down rigger rod starting to just bounce up and down. give your rod a pretty good "rip" to try and get the hook set on the slider lure and out of the release and reel like a maniac until the slider slides down to your last lure. On average you'll miss more fish on a slider than on your other setups.
  8. Thanks for the report. I'll be at Wilson Thu/Fri/Sat to give it a go.
  9. I'm running Amish Outfitter releases on my Otter Boat boards with rubber bands connected to the fishing line. The problem I'm having is getting the rubber bands to break when I get a fish less than 10-12lbs on them. I'm using small rubber bands (actually need to double bands on some coppers), but I'm eventually going to get into a problem when the outer lines won't release and I pull them into a closer planer line. Any recommendations? Thanks, Doug
  10. I'll third this. There are some BIG logs floating out there now. Be Careful!!!
  11. I'm now down to 450 to 500' of wire on two of my four wire rods. My question is whether it is advisable to slice new wire on or simply replace the entire line. I came very close to getting spooled a couple of times recently and need to get more wire on soon. If you do splice, what type of knots do you use? I saw a video on splicing wire once, but can't seem to locate it now. Also, I bought an Okuma Clarion 553LS that Slippery Sinker told me could easily hold 400' of copper. My question is how much 50lb PowerPro backing I can fit on this reel with 400' of copper. Any assistance is much appreciated. Thanks, Doug
  12. We headed up to Wilson late morning Friday with a middle aged couple from State College PA who work with my wife at Penn State University. This would be their first venture out on the Great Lakes and had only minimal fishing experience. Too say I was wary might be understating it. A lot of people equate fishing with sitting on a sunny bank on a Sunday afternoon and waiting for their bobbers to go under. I was pleasantly wrong. They took to fishing like ducks to water and Karen's husband Tom picked up on the techniques quickly and was helping rig within the first few hours. Friday Evening; We headed straight north out of Wilson at about 4:30 PM and after passing quite a lot of bait with no marks in 50-90' of water, we set up in about 150' and headed north. I ran Green, Blue and Carmel Dolphin F/Fs off of two wires and one rigger. Wires were out 175' to 350' and riggers from 60 to 125'. We also ran two inline boards with three colors on them with a couple of Jim Piano's (Hammerhead) Red Eye spoons in various bright colors from them. Lastly, we put a 300 copper down the chute with a mag Green NBK. After trolling to about 200, we hit a 4 lb coho on the three color. We quickly followed up with a 8 lb laker on the other three color. Seeing the top lines were active, I switched out the 300' copper with a 10 color (6 color out) pulling an orange baby spin doc and an orange J-11 down the chute. By evening we had put a handful of coho, steelies and lakers in the boat, but the other lines were pretty much dead other than a few knock offs on the riggers. Saturday Morning; We headed to about 200' a little west of Wilson and ran the same program as the day before. The coho, lakers and steelies came to play again, but we kept getting knocked off on the riggers and short strikes on the wires. I checked the tension on the Blacks Releases and they were plenty firm. The hooks were sharp on the flies and the drag right on the rods (I'll attribute some of this to the new folks being slow to get to the rods ) About 11:00 we went in as the lake was beginning to get a little nasty. Thinking that our friends might have had enough of getting bumped around, I told them we didn't have to go back out for an evening trip. They quickly said they definitely want to go back out!!! Saturday Evening; Same area as the morning and same setup, but things had changed. The lake had calmed down and we were picking at some 8-14 lb kings all evening in the 200' to 350' range. A lot of doubles during the evening kept things hopping. A Caramel Dolphin F/F fished on a rigger from 80-120' took most of the kings. Cohos and steelies still there. Sunday Morning; We took a quick look at the weather report and knew that rain was headed our way SOON. I now had a couple of true converts on my hands and they wanted to get rolling ASAP. Good thing we did! Fished both east and west of Wilson in 250 to 350' till about 11:00 and got into a better class of kings with the biggest being 23 1/2 lbs. Karen fought the big king for 20 minutes and refused any assistance in getting "her fish" to the boat. Nice job young lady!
  13. Chinooker, PM sent for everything except the Carry Lite Shells and Swim Ladder.
  14. I strongly recommend an inline swivel. They're cheap and I've had too many Albright knots fail. I think the copper cuts into them.
  15. See bobs_boy's and Yankee Troller's reports from the last week. You won't find better or more real time info than these guys. Wilson is 6 miles west of Olcott, so it's still pertinent.
  16. Thanks for the detailed report Rick. Hard to believe I was fishing the same waters as you!!! I won't post my results.
  17. Nice report Tim! I fished Wilson on Saturday and took a beating with the waves. Left this morning. Wish I had fished today.
  18. Be there Fri-Sun. Boat is moored there. Word is that fishing is picking up.
  19. Nice job Rick. That was some tough fishing. They turned on for a few hours Thursday night for us, but then all I could muster were a few lakers and steelies. Well Done!
  20. I bought a GoPro Hero 3 but haven't hooked it up yet. It's staying above the water because I'm sure I'd just get disgusted on how many fish looked then turned away.
