  1. Glad you are finding some. Takes the edge of the earlier frustration.
  2. Hope you get out soon but don't take risky chances.
  3. We had the same thing with our brand new 350 Mag inboard first day of fishing this summer. Engine ran great on the run out to the fishing grounds and trolled all day and bogged down on the run in. The closer home we got the worse it bogged. Got into the river and she idled fine. Turned out it was a clogged fuel filter, even though it looked good. Try the simple things first.
  4. Happy kids and pretty fish - a winning combination. What I've found while fishing with the kids is that they are not species conscious. They just want to catch fish - and they did. Last trip my grandson told me he would rather catch a 12 pound steelhead than a 20 pound king any day - way more fun.
  5. Good job. Catching is always fun. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app Age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm.
  6. I feel for ya on the fleas - had the same conditions last week. Even had them on the rigger cables and connections to the weights and probe. We did the same as you on 8/1 with about the same results. Good job on finding some fish though. We don't fish coppers, but shallow riggers and cores have been doing the job for us too.
  7. We were checked at the Oak last year. The Coasties followed the boat upriver and checked us after we were secured at the dock. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app Age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm.
  8. Well - We have a crew that has a three of the same guys almost every trip - me, my son and my grandson - and then a few pickups every trip. We have been to the lake a total of ten days and we only lost one day that we could not fish due to weather. We caught fish every time out - but the number of mature kings is certainly fewer than we had last year. Conversely, the number of large steelhead is up for us so we are not complaining. We are still having a good season. My only regret is that instead of ten days at the lake I wish it were twenty.
  9. Our corner looks like Mudflat's except our riggers have cranks and not motors. We like four for the variety in depths we can target. We usually run at least one fairly shallow 35'-45' for the wandering steelhead. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app Age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm.
  10. Thanks Capt. We got home and my grandson said his arms were sore - "but it's a good sore."
  11. You can use just about any large bead to keep the swivel out of the twilli. Also, we keep a lighter on board to heat the wire where we re going to cut it. Then it cuts without fraying.
  12. Last day of this trip and we woke up to rain again but radar showed it to be about over so we got a fairly early start. Ran back to our marks from yesterday in 100 fow but didn't get anything on until we reached the 28 line. We got our first fish on a Luhr Jensen spoon with green tape on an out and down at about 47' by the youngest grand kid. The next fish came on a gold 42nd spinnie pulling a smitty fly behind a chinook diver out 180' on a 2 setting. Then we had another one on a Luther Jensen spoon with chrome tape down 57'. Next fish came on our same spinnie fly combo. The last fish came on the green taped spoon again at 47'. We had a good week even though we had to dodge a few storms and missed one day due to wind. Picked up the trailer on the way home on Saturday and now have it home for new brakes and bunks. If anyone ever needs it I can recommend Condo's Welding in Mil Hall PA for trailer repairs. Did I mention the fleas were terrible? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app Age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm.
  13. I have an outboard powered 17' center console fiberglass boat that I use at the Virginia shore for flounder fishing mostly. It came factory equipped with a set of rocker switches that was fragile. I noticed early on that if my hands were wet and I had any cuts or scrapes on my fingers that I would get a shock from my stainless steering wheel when the motor was running. Can't happen right? No electrical connection to the manual steering system. Well, the switches started to fail after a few years and I replaced the them with a Blue Seas gang switch with built in fuses and then added a grounding buss bar. I replaced some of the factory wiring and cleaned it all up and the electrical shock that I experienced through the steering wheel disappeared. Something about how the boat was wired at the factory caused the manual steering system to pick up enough voltage to transmit a shock to broken wet skin. I'm not enough of an electrician to explain it, but I know I fixed a problem and don't know why.
  14. I like to use a white green dot spinnie pulling a bright green fly with uv glow and a gold 42nd spinnie pulling a moonshine smitty fly. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app Age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm.
  15. Finished the day with a 12 pound steelhead on a king of sting at 47' in 150 fow Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app Age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm.
  16. Fishing 80-120 fow this morning. On the water again this evening and the temp has moved a little deeper. We've lost a couple but landed a ten pound Steelie off our probe rigger on a gobie spoon at 97' Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app Age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm.
  17. Started out as soon as this morning's storm passed. We stayed close since we had a sailor on his last morning of leave before he had to report back to his ship. First fish was a teen king in our port side out and down on a King Of Sting at 47'. That fish tangled every line but one on that side of the boat - the corner rigger, wire diver and a ten color. While that mess was being cleaned up our probe rigger fired at 100' with a FLT gobie pattern spoon on a nice football brown. Then we got a hit on our three color and our sailor was able to pull in a beautiful Steelie that hit on a Steelie Dan. While clearing lines for our run back in another brown hit and our sailor was able to land king, steelbow, and brown on his last morning on Lake O before his Mediterranean cruise. We are Waiting out the weather to try to get in a late afternoon trip for the rest of the crew. 18. We found 50 degree water about ten feet deeper out of the oak Wednesday than we found on Tuesday. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app Age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm.
  19. Waited until the first thunder boomer passed this morning before heading out to our waypoints from yesterday. Had our first fish on while setting up - a small ice water king on meat off our probe rigger at 75'. Got another small king on meat at 75' and a small Steelie at 60' on the other corner stacked using a copper backed orange spoon. Then we took a 10 pound steel on the same setup. Then as we started hearing radio chatter about another storm cell moving in our 180 chinook diver pulling a uv green glow fly started ripping some line and we cleared lines preparing for a run for port while landing a 12 pound king. This ended our Wednesday. Hoping for more tomorrow Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app Age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm.
  20. Headed out late this morning after the blow to do some prospecting. We headed NW out of port to 100 fow. Set out our spread and I asked "Who brought the banana?" My 17 yo granddaughter said it was hers. I told her if she would eat the banana and get rid of the peel we would catch a fish. About 15 seconds after the banana was overboard the wonder bread spinny pulling a Uv green glow fly off a chinook diver at 180' on a 2 setting. Soon we pulled In a 22 pound king. Our next king was a 16 pounder on a meat rig on our probe rigger parked at 65'. Our last king was our heaviest at 23 pounds on a alewife spoon on a 10 color off our big board. Fish were taken in about 300 fow. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app Age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm.
  21. I'm guessing the springs broke with the boat on the trailer but the weight of the boat kept them from pulling apart. With the weight off, it could separate and what I experienced was separation of already broken springs. I am really fortunate that the second separation happened when I was going only about 15 mph on a side road as it let the rear axle loose and lift the trailer off the road and jackknife the trailer.
  22. Slow going for our first trip of the season. We only boated 8 fish over three days - not enough to establish a pattern. No skunks on the boat. Most fish were caught on bright green things in the upper 80' of the water column. Did run into our usual share of problems though. First problem was that our subtroll didn't work so we were fishing blind. Hoping a new power plug fixes that for the next trip. Second problem was we lost RPMs on the brand new engine on the way back in Sunday evening. The guys at Lake Breeze Marina had it correctly diagnosed as a clogged fuel filter bright and early Monday morning so we didn't lose too much of the day. Finally I was bringing the trailer home today to work on it while the boat is in the water and broke a spring at Mansfield,PA. I ratchet strapped it back together and limped down the road to Mill Hall where I broke another spring on the other axle, so the trailer is now in a repair shop in Mill Hall. The good thing is they will make arrangements for me to pick it up on a weekend so I don't have to burn vacation (fishing) time to pick it up. Can't wait to do this all over again. 23. I was the flea flicker on our boat yesterday. Took one of our six hits on a ten color and I had to stand at the transom to keep the fleas off. In ten colors we had three times the line would have jammed without attention Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app Age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm.
  24. Great report- great fish. Getting fire up for our first trip up in just a week now.
  25. Replaced the 350 Mag at 2000 hours due to water problems. I was told by the Mercruiser dealer that I got the last available factory new inboard 350 Mag without catalytic converters. It has a tag on it that says not for use in boats in the US except for repowers.
