Looks like you have it in Manual Zoom Marker mode. Push the Range key and select Auto or go to the Display Menu and turn off Zoom Marker.

Lots of boats out there using these. We still just have 10 and 12lb round ball weights but the blowback has been insane. Maybe next year - after we add down speed & temp.

Handheld is ok as a backup but vhf is line-of-sight; you really need that 5 - 8ft antenna to get any kind of range. They're not expensive new but pop up used often too.
