Headed north out from myers with a buddy last night around 6:30PM towards the power plant. Made a few stops along the way scouting for new spots to Jig and found a few options. Fish were very picky an strikes were all short. After dropping at least 4 fish we had half way to the boat, we put some stinger hooks on and that helped a little. Went 6 for 10 total with the biggest being 26" and 7.3 pounds (hard to weigh them live but it was the fattest one we have seen this year, so I had to know). Headed in around 10PM. All fish were released unharmed. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

A bit late but here it is. Took some new guys out to show em how to catch lakers Jigging. Five of us in the boat total made for quite the adventure in the rain. We launched from LongPoint around 2:30PM and started looking for fish in 50 or so FOW. Surface temp was 63 or so degrees. After some short strikes we moved to 40 FOW and found bait pods so thick the fish finder thought were bottom. We couldn't scare any fish out of them so we moved deeper and found the fish there. First one hit the boat around 5:15 and the bite was on after that. Ended up with 10 in the boat with the largest being 27" on the board. Everyone who was fishing caught two at least and it was the first time for a few of the guys catching lakers jigging. They wanted some for the freezer so 4 went in the cooler and 6 went back unharmed. Packed up around 8:30PM or so. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Personally I think the amount of them I have seen on Cayuga this year is great compared to recent previous years. I haven't seen a live one yet this year and the only marks on the fish we got Saturday were old, some fish had no marks at all.

A bit late but here it goes... Hit the water around 7am, launched from long point and started looking for fish. Couldn't find much bait so started targeting fish on the bottom and had good success. Ended up with 15 lakers in the boat and 4 in the cooler. Most fish were over 21" and after we had what we wanted in the cooler it was fun to catch and release a bunch. Fish came between 30-60 FOW. We finally did find bait later in the day around 1:30pm and got some nice fish there too but the sky turned evil and after static electricity started sparking off my pole onto my arm, we called it quits at 2:30pm (picture of sky below). Biggest fish was 28" and 8.6 pounds on the digital scale. This was my buddy's first big fish while Jigging and it was a great 15 minute fight with 3 runs the the bottom. All fish came on Hermits jig heads with white flukes. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Phew, Makes me feel better as well... I was only running 3 lines but also struck out completely Monday (5/25) Fished 6:15am - 1pm or so with no fish except a perch in the south end on a lure 15ft down. Did decently Saturday (5/23) though with two fish total and my buddy's first rainbow. This was also the first salmon we have ever caught on my boat. -Pete Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Third time was the charm for us out there. It was the third time we have been out on my boat with the new gear trying this trolling thing... We landed 2 fish big enough to take home. Hit the water @myers about 5:30am when the fog was so think you couldn't see more then 10 feet around you.... Was an interesting ride from there and I learned to appreciate the GPS on the FF in a whole new way. Packed up around 1pm when the sun was burning us, still no idea where the bottle of sunscreen went... First one was 23" and 5.6 lbs on my digital scale. 2nd was 21.5 and 4.8lbs. Special thanks to the guy who gave us some great advice on what we were doing wrong near the south end. Landed us another fish we would likely not have without your help. I hope you got the B*****d who not 20 minutes later, ran over your lines and gear at full speed. If you need witnesses please pm me, you have two and we owe you a beer at least. Hope he didn't get you too bad. Didn't enter the derby at all, just fishing for fun. -Pete Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Here's an old topic from a little while back when I was looking for a Fish finder that was great for Jigging. Has alot of good info from a bunch of people who helped inform my decision. http://www.lakeontariounited.com/fishing-hunting/topic/37917-fish-finder-jigging/?hl=%2Bfish+%2Bfinder I am very happy with the Hummingbird 386CI for the record. I assume the Helix 5 would be even better with the larger screen. -Pete

A little late but here it is. Launched from Myers at 6:30am and found warm 50 degree water almost immediately. Ran two boards and a line in the middle from the salt plant south (lots of debris by salt plant). No action until around 10:30 nearer to the south end where we picked up the only fish of the day, 16" salmon which had the hook out the second he hit the net. He was returned unharmed after a quick pic. Water got warmer as we went south and I saw as high as 58 degrees on the south end. Packed up and headed back around 11:30am. -Pete

Launched from Myers yesterday morning 5/4 at 6:00am and trolled the south end with 3 lines out, all we ended up with was 1 dink 8" salmon who ended up becoming a victim to a very quick seagull. Might try trolling down from the salt plant in the future if the water is that warm over there. Packed up around 11:30am when the wind kicked up. -Pete

Here is the guide I used when I was looking to figure out how to Jig for Lakers a few years ago. All information on here is still relevant today. - http://cayugafisher.net/pages/resdex.php You can also buy top quality Jigs here - http://deepwater.cayugafisher.net/index.php I have used these Jig heads for around 4 years now and never had a problem. The hooks they have are also the sharpest and strongest I have ever found on a Jig head. I have caught lots of Lakers in the past few years jigging using the information on that site and the top quality gear from @Hermit. -Pete

This trip was great fun, first salmon catch of my life and I ended up going home with my limit. In my wife's words "this is way better than the salmon I buy at Wegmans" so that's a big win for me as shes never liked any of the fish I have caught from Cayuga (Lakers, bass and Perch). Hermit is also an awesome teacher and I am looking forward to replicating his setup on my boat this year. Thanks Alec! -Pete

Water was rough as today when we splashed down at 6:30am. Headed out from Myers with the intention of going up to the power plant but it was too rough by the time we got to Taughannock so we stopped there and hid behind the point. Two small lakers Jigging in 4 hours and we decided to experiment a little and try a new spot. Two drops and I hooked what we thought was a salmon but ended up being this beautiful brown when we got it in the boat, First one I have ever caught and it was a fighter. It hit the surface it jumped out of the water 3 times before we got it into the net and then proceeded to break the hook in half... Fished for another 2 hours without a decent bite and called it quits. Great day on the water with my Dad and hes glad he decided to come up last minute. Measured in at 23" and 6.6lbs on the digital scale. Catching browns is awesome -Pete

Was a great trip for sure. Here are the few pics that came out decent. All fish are very alive so getting a good picture proved difficult. The two I am in are the same fish, the pics taken either had the fish looking good and my head cut off or the fish looking bad and my head present. I also learned alot about how to improve my technique (thanks Hermit!) -Pete

Rented a cottage just north of Longpoint on the lake for the last week. Even thought I have them (we took pictures of all fish that landed in the boat to keep track of how many we had caught), I refuse to post the 50+ pictures of fish we caught last week Jigging. All fish were caught on the east side of the lake. All fish were caught on Hermit's 1oz or 1.5oz jig heads with zoom flukes (mostly white). Here are pics of the biggest 4. All fish were caught Jigging in the morning (we were usually on the water by 6am) and despite many attempts, we were unable to catch any at night... Not sure what I'm doing wrong there but the weather was also pretty bad most the time (that may have been the problem). Hell one night we went out in the boat with wetsuits on, in the middle of a what ended up being a monsoon but with no good results at either Deans Cove or on the east side across from it. The largest fish caught was by my sister and weighed in at 7.42 pounds on the digital scale and measured 28" long. All other fish (apart from the 4 below) were released unharmed (I'm getting good at this burping the fish thing). Second picture has bad color on it because my buddy was playing too much with it on his phone, its his first LT ever caught though. I took one of just the fish on mine but without faces. It would have been impossible to go vertical Jigging most days last week without the Minn Kota Terrova 24v with the 60" shaft (thanks to everyone who pushed for the 60" shaft and 24 volts when I was on the edge). The motor was awesome and enabled us to Jig for fish in pretty much anything that didn't crash over the bow of my 16.5" Aluminum Deep V Hull. As long as the battery's held out we could go Jigging and the motor kept us in one spot on the water. i-Pilot anchor lock is great! I highly recommend this upgrade (although it was expensive) for anyone who wants to be able to Jig regardless of bad weather or wind. I also made another discovery last week after my buddy pointed out to me I was using a nice Baitcasting reel on a spinning medium action ugly stick and convinced me to pickup a new pole. Honestly I never knew there was a different type of pole for Baitcasting reels. First day in the water with the Field and Stream Tec Spec Medium action baitcasting pole and I had 10 fish in the boat before 9am. It was a complete game-changer for me and as they were on clearance, I ended up buying 3 that night and replacing all my ugly sticks. The stiffness of the pole is perfect for Jigging and definitely allows you to feel the fish properly on the drop and better set the hook. Being able to feel the fish hit the jig and being able to react properly in a timely manor was the difference between 2 fish in the boat and 10+ in the same time. All and all it was a great week for fishing, only two incidents where the boat and the dock had a fight in the storms. The Tuesday storm I stayed out fishing a little too long and ended up smashing the transducer off the back of the boat when it came down hard as I was trying to put it on the lift. Lesson learned there, lucky the mount from my old fish finder (which I still have laying around) fit perfectly and we were back in action the next day. Thanks to all who helped with the decision on the motor and before it the FF, hummingbird 386CI performed great as well! -Pete

I ran across this thread the other day and found some good info regarding this topic. I am also working on how to Jig for suspended fish better as I have only ever caught them on the drop or reel in. Honestly I didn't know you could Jig for suspended fish until the other day, I thought they had to be on the bottom or near it for Jigging to work on them. http://www.lakeontariounited.com/fishing-hunting/topic/45612-keuka-713-14-skunk-continues/

I am not sure how the waves are by deans but the wind is coming from the south. I am directly across from deans and it was rough north of long point this morning but it's good at any sheltered points like aurora college area. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Hit the water at Myers around 6:30am and went north to AES for some Jigging action... had 2 guys in the boat fishing who had never caught anything Jigging before so the pressure was on. Total of 7 Lakers in the boat and 4 keepers in the livewell, biggest was 24". Each man got one laker and I got 4 total. Bait was scattered everywhere from 50" to 100" and fish were all caught in this range. Around 12 we headed over to Taughannock but the action was nowhere near as good there. Had to get on the edge of the massive bait pods to get them to bite but the new Terrova with Anchor lock did the trick perfectly (best investment ever for Jigging). Cottage on the lake next week so more reports to come. I have read reports of others doing better this day but that's how it goes sometimes. -Pete
