My 1989 88spl would do that when I 1st bought it.It had sat for 6 years and it was a function of very fine un seeable gas vanish flakes plugging the main jets of the carb. If you are out there running it and it won't come up on RPM/Plane, push the prime button in "your key" if it straightens up, it is a fuel starvation issue. Those carbs are very simple, but just because they look clean doesn't mean they are. You need to spray choke cleaner via the red straw though every orifice/ air bleed passages, bowl vents, ect. and see it come out some were else on the carb.You can also use a rubber tipped air nozzle hooked to your air compressor to blow passages out.Do the idle circuit as well. I had to clean mine 3 times till it quit acting up. I presumed it was flaking off the inside of fuel lines on the engine after the fuel filter.

If it was left out during rebuild, it was intentional, shoody, and lame. Pretty hard to accidently leave one out being there is a progressive torque sequence involved when installing heads "Properly"! Unless it fell out and is in the boat. Short hjead bolts on Small Block Chevys are external, "Not inside valve cover"!

I always run SD's and Pro-Es but give the edge to Pro-trolls. especially The Bullfrog with Atomik Ultra Green glow fly. NBK green and chartreuse are my runner ups. SD fav. is Green dot Dalmation! -

I had all my 7.5 ft ones break. But guess what they are only rated to 15lb test and I had 30 on them and was honking on salmon. All my 8.5ft ones have always given me great service. Should I fault eagle claw. One of the 7.5 ft ones was brand new! Not saying this is your issue.

I've been forced many times to fish a flipped lake. If the winds aren't to bad run out to Blue water. It doesn't effect it as much out there.

I'm glad you figured it out. I did not suspect your rocker adjustments because you had 2 days of it running good prior to the failure! The way you adjusted them the final time is the way my dad taught me. It works but there is an easy way while not running. You just bring each cylinder up to top dead center of compression stroke. I start with #1 . Snug rocker nut down while spinning pushrod with your fingers. When you feel resistance to your spinning of pushrod then tighten one full turn. Keep in mind in a few seconds that lifter will bleed off and the pushrod will again spin so you DON"T keep tightening the nut. You do both valves. Turn the crank 90 degrees, "for V8s" in the direction of operation" Watch the time marks on Harmonic bal." Do the next cyl. in the firing order. Work your way thru the firing order till done.

For 2 years or so I was running mag divers but using info from charts and other people using reg. sized divers. That said, these divers were running way down in the ice water and I thought they were running somewhere near my riggers just in the cline. I caught quite a lot of fish off them and couldn't understand why my riggers wouldn't go when I matched the divers. Well they weren't in the same water. I now park riggers just in the cline and one deep and the same for the divers and coppers though will put a copper or a slider cheater in the warm water as well! -
All of your data defines that you had a lean mixture or possibly advanced timing or severe retarded timing. These conditions could lead to the melted electrode, white soot, and a hole in a piston from detonation.. The loose plugs I would attribute to not being torqued to spec.With all the problems everyone is having with Ethanol fuel restricting jets and drilled passage ways in carbs maybe your original head got cracked do to detonation, though this isn't usual.I'm sure you had the distributor out during the head swap, and this is a chance for timing to get off. Oh and burnt valves would be idicative to retarded timing. That new head didn't just blow, I believe one of of these items caused it. If the plugs on the other bank look normal then I would lean toward the starboard side main jet circuit of the carb caused a lean mixture.

I went to the trouble of fixing my 6 amp charging system on my 7.5 Honda that I troll with and it does charge, but not enough at trolling speeds as it is a very simple diode only, variable voltage system, non voltage regulated. I always carry an extra deep cycle battery unconnected, as a backup for the starting battery that the down riggers run off from. In the event that they run the starting batt down to low, I can connect the spare deep cycle and get started. One thing I have noticed with my Fishhawk X4 is that when my starting battery gets low, the fishhawk starts acting up. When I connect the deep cycle standby battery, the fishhawk straightens up. Now when I say the start battery is low, it still has enough in it to crank the 88hp Evenrude but the drop effects the fishhawk. I don't carry batterys to charge them, I run extension cords and carry charger to boat. -

With such a cold winter last year do you all think things are running late this year? The Oak was still slow on Matures this last week. I know the mature heavy staged bite didn't come until Sat. of Labor Day weekend last year at Fair Haven. Many attributed this to the cold winter.
