New boat - advice on trolling
Keep'n it Reel replied to On the Hook's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
I agree with les on the copper I would not start with that mistakes can be very costly at that point!!! And my own opinion I would give go with down riggers and dipsy to start out they are simple to get use to can have a lot of separation in your spread to cut back on tangles very effective and very versatile Joe -

Best way to sharpen fillet knife on the boat

I do a lot of butchering every year deer ducks geese and even beef, I have a few of those quick sharpness in my different hunting bags and one on the boat I also have a smiths precision sharpening set which has a clam for the blade and a guide for proper sharpening every time with 2 stones a coarse and fine and also a ceramic. But by far the best for me and also what I consider the quickest is my steel I have a steel my great grandfather have me and also a ceramic rod once you get the the art of it you won't look back 2-4 passes on each side of the blade after each fish and its like a hot knife through butter everytime. But each and every person has a way that works for them -
Thanks guys I will check it out an yeah I had 2 stands stolen last year

And thanks les yeah I did the same thing last year with my little boat just I had a buddy with a 2x4 in the front to break it up!! And yes I am very determined when it comes to my fishing I went to the creek this morning got 10 bows biggest being about 23" and as I write this post I am in the woods waiting on some more deer non stop action

Looking at the weather for the weekend was looking like yesterday would be the best chance on the lake so deiced the boat Thursday evening and loaded up the gear had a crew of 4 on board we where fishing right around 7 and as I was setting rods we had a hook up on a rigger on a flt tackle uv sea sick but with a green ladder back on it lost that fish continued to set gear working on getting the coppers in and we double rigger and 5 color core the core had a uv blue alewife and the rigger had a new spoon on it only second trip with it but it has been crushing the salmon for me but would prove to change species today up came a 5lbs laker from 62 down was a first fish for miss Allyson so good start!! Well the 5mph wind forecasted lasted about 10 min then the wind started picking up, finding new fisherman or women in her case that is willing to fish on the boat this time of year can be rough but she put up with the snow and the wind was a real trooper well we picked at the fish one here one their defiantly not the same spot I had a few weeks ago well had to drop ally off at the dock at 9.30 so started to head that way and ended the first part of the morning with a nice 7 fish flurry landing her a nice 3lbs salmon beautiful 2lbs bow and another 3lbs brown not bad for her first morning out and getting the slam!!! Well dropped her off thawed a couple of the reels out and back out we went the action was fast for about a hour with a lot of hook ups but not very many landed the flt kos paddle with a white halo fly behind it was doing it job on both the mag dipsy out 155 and also the rigger parked a 69 but the heavy action came and went trolled north of Watkins a few miles with a slow pick of fish turned and fished back to the ramp!! I dropped a Atlantic at the back of the boat that I sure would have liked to get a picture of but that's my fault my net was frozen and could not get it to extend and as they normally do all hell broke lose at the back of the boat under the rigger under the dipsy back across just could not get it to settle down for one second but lots more to get!!! For some reason I still can't post pics on the site had some good ones to add and can't!! Well back to watching the weather and decide when the next trip will be! Happy holidays to all as well safe travels home!!!

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.Your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours. Now and for ever. Amen.

2.3 was the good number for me the other day any slower and the bites came from smaller fish and faster and the bite would die but the longer we were able to keep the speed at 2.3 I will hit the water again soon I'm sure and I will try the spectrum again! Always something to think about

Hmm that is why I asked, I very rarely fish slow I tend to stay in the 2.1 to 2.5 range that's most of the year but as you say that's my style what works for one may not for others that's what makes fishing so entertaining so many ways to catch a fish not a one size fits all program I don't run rigs but I pull inline boards wire divers and riggers and normally multiples of all hahaha cove a foot ball field size area in a single pass!!!

when you say slower troll what makes you say this I am curious? And the b-fuller paddles did awesome for me

Can't agree more some of my best fishing days came from a 15' northport troller no electronics at all on it had to listen to what the fish where saying and how they wanted the presentation, I got a fish finder and I notice myself giving that more attention then what I prob should be don't get me wrong they are amazing tools but I don't depend on mine to find me fish on the finger lakes at least -

Nick from reel stories and I have ran the under water cameras before and have had some awesome footage but also some that can be frustrating seeing the number of fish that looked at a lure and didn't hit can some times be discouraging but also a great learning opportunity seeing how the fish react to the lures and follow them sometimes for a long time before striking or just drifting back out if view -
