We def saw more Squaws then Scoter this morning. Mostly immature drakes and hens though. Mature drakes were few and far between. Scoters did not fly till later and worked the decoys the best when we were out retrieving our down birds, go figure! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
Tried for Mallards Saturday with zero luck! Decided to hit the Lake this morning and was able to almost get our 2 man limit. Could have killed many more but didn't want to take any more hens so decided to let them land and fly away! Ended up with 6 Squaws 3 Scoters and one bonus Mallard.
A buddy did a DIY hunt last year, dropped off a left to fend for themselves! Both killed moose and one was a record book type! Absolutely huge, very jealous!
Only was able to get out a handful of times at best do to deer hunting. Love the late season and can't wait! Water should definitely start opening up with this warm up! Was a little worried about numbers, but hopefully should be ok.
Has definitely been a great year on this thread, by far the most info shared amongst everyone! Love to see that other people love this sport as much as I do! Maybe kill a few Ducks after the Holidays then more than likely heading to Ohio to try and get some bone on the ground! Hope they all don't loose their horns before then, hearing of a ton of Bucks that have sheaded already!
I would bet that your problem comes down to the primer. A European made primer will be a few thousands bigger in diameter compared to an American made. Which may not sound like alot, but when you are trying to make a vacuum chamber you can get alot more blow back. Rio G 600 primers are what I'm planning on getting when I make the switch to the Blackhorn 209. Tighter is ALWAYS better! And like Pap said always fire off a primer by it self before loading to assure no residue is left from cleaning.
I talked for a while with a guy a few years ago that shot black powder for competition. He swore to me that there was no way that you are burning all the powder with .150 grains! He said all it does is blows out the end of the gun, creates ALOT more smoke, and makes the gun ALOT dirtier after every shot. Also that when you do not get all the powder to burn consistently, obviously alot harder to group consistently. Not saying this true for everyone but all that info has proven true for me! When I make the switch to Blackhorn I may try up to .115 grains but nothing over that.
Was skunked on my last sit, good thing I was lucky enough to get the doe for the freezer last night. 3 weeks of a break then hopefully heading back Ohio again but with the muzzleloader this time! Can't come soon enough!
100 grains of 777 and a .295 grain Barnes Expander MZ bullets! Really want to switch to granular powder next season. But what I'm using now tips them over pretty damn good. It's the only thing I use all season . Shotgun never leaves the gun cabinet!
I finally touched one off this evening! Not a buck but a big mature doe. Had 4 deer around me most of the time I was on stand. Waited to see if a buck would show but never did. Took the shot at about 70 yards and she didn't make it 40 yards. Took the top of her heart off and made a pretty bad mess of one lung. With the season at its end had to get another one for the freezer.
Seen deer all over in my drive, and kicked one up walking in. Hoping this warmer wether makes them want the winter wheat. Only small bucks get the pass from here on out!
