Been on this forum for about a month and finally getting to introduce myself. My name is walter and i.m of finnsh ancestry hence the handle finnlander. I love fishing or anything to do with being out on the water.Catching fish is just a bonus, just getting out on the water is the good part.I.ve owned a lot of boats over the years but nothing that i would feel safe in fishing ontario. So now iv,e bought a 21 foot chris craft scorpion cuddy with a 5.7 merc cruiser 265 h.p. and i think it will do quite well for the big water. This is really a good forum and its all you guys out there sharing your expertise that makes it so. I.m well over 30 so i,m not very good on the computer and still learning how to use this site. I may ask a lot of guestions but i,m on a learning curve on salmon fishing so just be patiant. Maybe some day i.ll be able to answer on this forum as well. I live north of newcastle near fenlon falls so most of my fishing will be between port hope and pickering. tight lines and safe boating everyone. finnlander

hate bags and socks. might be hard to mount a kicker the boat has a moulded in swim platform. anyone know anything about trolling plates? anywhy i might be getting ahead of myself but do value all of your opinions and ideas.

just bought a new [used] boat and was wondering about trolling speeds.the boat is a chris craft scorpion 21 footer with a cuddy. i think it weights in at around 3500 lbs empty. its powered by a 5.7 merc cruiser with 265 h.p. i.m sure there are lots of you out there with a similer setup and was wondering if it would troll slow enough for salmon since this is my first boat with this setup i don.t know what to exspect. if it is alittle fast what would be the best way to slow it down. i don.t want to drag anything behind the boat so what would be my best option. kicker? trolling plate etc??????? again thanks to all.................... finnlander

thanks everyone this helps me a lot. so i.ll be looking for light northern winds. and you are right about boat controll takes all the fun away when all you are doing is trying ot steer the boat. and keep it off the rocks even o inland lakes
-
thank you i have a 19 foot closed bow boat with a 165 hp stern drive.have never been out in lake ont with it so don.t know what it will handle saftely. all i have ever fished is the inland lakes and have no problem with them even when blowing hard. i hope to be fishing from cobourge to pickering and was just wondering what to expect. i guess if its blowing 20 or 25 mph i can pretty well go walleye fishing locally. thanks for the info and here,s hoping for light northern winds

is there any way to say how big the wave,s would be on the lake by wind speed. since i live about an hour north of newcastle it would be nice to know the condition of the lake before driving for an hour. i can always get the forecast for any given city but don.t know if other factors were involved thanks

this will be my first year fishing lake ont and need some help. i.ll be fishing from port hope to pickering. from the posts i gather that early spring means flatlining in water 10 to 20 or 30 ft? what lures or spoons do best and i think you have to troll far behind the boat so as not to spook the fish. how far and whats the best kind of line to use and is it the same for rainbows or are they deeper? thank you

thanks this does help. i will only be running 2 riggers 1 on each side of the boat and the beam is close to 8 ft. i do not have any dipseys and want to learn to use the riggers first. what would be a good setup with my 2 riggers. thanks -
DOWN RIGGER TROLLING QUESTION.......
finnlander replied to finnlander's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
thanks for your reply and what you say makes sense. i h ave a couple spin doctors how are they different from flashers? and what can you run behind them. i was told hardly anyone uses flashers anymore. if spoons are run without a flasher what do you run in front of them to attract the fish? -
i.m new to salmon fishing, this spring will be the first time i have used riggers, so i have lots of things to learn. one thing i.m really concerned about is how far from the cannon ball do you place your flasher or spin doctor and how far back from them do you put your fly, spoon etc. i now there are alot of different answers and opinions but just generally speaking i need a place to start. also what would determine if you use a flasher or spin doctor fly spoon or cut bait. thanks guys in advance. by the way this is a great site.
