First time trolling in this cold water winter time
Iron Duke replied to smaltcody's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Fish the south end up to the salt plant and back. Don't be afraid to go in close or out in the middle til you locate them... Fish cores copper riggers wires the same as you would do normally ... Focus on the fish you locate in the top 100 ft of water and you should be fine.... Normal spoons sticks and flys... Mike [ Post made via Android ] -

Launched out of Watkins aboard Matt's boat Skippin School and headed out the canal and set up shop... Matt took the wheel and searched with the Lowrance while Steve and I got the gear down... We ran wires, riggers, coppers, top lines and cores with a good mix of spoons, sticks and spin doc fly combos .... We headed up the east side with nothing. first thing in the morning it was pretty chilly after steve and I got the gear out we kinda looked at each other like what are we doing out here but after we stepped back through the drop canvas we instantly realized Matt had the Buddy propane heater going and it was extremely toasty and comfortable in there.. We decided to head toward the other side, got halfway across and the rigger fires with a small little landlock and it was steady fish from there til end of the day with a mixed bag of Salmon, Browns and Bows..... Nothing huge today but did get some chunky salmon and they hit like a ton of bricks, it was awesome watching them slam those riggers... We caught fish on every rod of the nine rod spread... Great day and was a beautiful November day on the water... Thanks Matt for having Steve and I along.... Mike

Well finally got a slide show and some video put together of all the fishing trips on the finger lakes this past season, so if you like fishing or some nice pics of Finger lakes scenery check it out.... Thanks Mike.... Meb6dmD_800

Sorry to hear about your loss... Thoughts and prayers to you and your family....

When you reel backward it should feel like its gonna stop but try to put a little muscle to it and it should feel like it loosens up.... if not sounds like you may have gotten a bad rigger... The handle should feel like its gonna unscrew when you get it loose
-
I'm not trying to be a wise ass but when you reel backward the handle should feel like it loosens up with that done you should be able to pull some cable out or with the weight on it should come out..... I grab a hold of the wheel and squeeze loosen crank handle backward until loose and the cable shpuld flow freely out with the weight on... Hope this helps sorry if it didnt ...... But thats about the only thing I can think of..... Lowering the Weight You can lower the trolling weight at a controlled rate by turning the crank handle gently counterclockwise (away from the boom). Depending on how far you turn, you can let your trolling weight descend as fast or as slowly as you wish. Turn the crank handle clockwise (toward the boom) until it you hear a click to stop the weight. This gives you control to let it plunge rapidly or sink slowly to a predetermined trolling depth. With multiple downriggers, you could start all your weights creeping down, one at a time, and then stop them each in turn. Mike
