Swas in the forum . His method was to cast net live bait, supposedly it is done on a certain section of river, up river donaw your post and thought maybe you would be willing to share some info/advice to a fellow fisherman. Have been fighting Big O since late 80"s only fished Hudson twice , out of Kingston, gentlemen I met at Fair Haven 15 yours ago during spring brown trip who is from the area came on my boat and showed what he does which is troll big lipped Bombers near the bottom mostly along 20' water hugging shoreline. Anyway I saw one charter captain from our area was doing Charters up there, thats why I 't know where, considering a charter to reduce learning curve, couple of retired fisherman lucking for fun. By the way just came back from a week at Fair Haven, have a 210 Thompson rag top. Best at Fair Haven was 29'Atlantic, 9'8" brown. Read you post and live reports often . What are your thoughts?

Mr clean's Fair Haven Report
cheeseyrider replied to mrclean's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Just got back from FH, up all week, west was best and warmer 48", caught fish all week except Thurs went east and had clear water, only one 17" rainbow, not a steelhead, let it go of course. 9'8" brown and 29" Atlantic was best, only average about 4-5 per outing. Old black and purple evil eyes with white on back took bigger fish, orange and green fire tiger took a few . We didn't kill em but were satisfied. Hadn't fished here in ten years since we moved to Oak Orchard. Will be back annually. -

I believe this Eagle is made by Lowrance and I believe you are correct that they don't service units older than 3 yrs.My last Lowrance was a 16c color unit and I was told by them, I believe after three years, that they will not service them. This Eagle unit will get someone in the game for very low costs and probably not worth the $$ to service anyway considering the low cost. -

Not knowing what to do with this unit I decided to see if someone starting out could use it to get started fishing the Big O. I used it on my boat until 2003 when I bought a bigger boat, so it works. It has dual transducers 50z/200z, has split screen for plotter, Loran module, 8'ft whip antenna. Since GPS has become the standard not sure if Loran system is up and running. Even without its use it gives someone a unit for little $$ Has all mounting hardware, wires, cables and instructional booklets. $100 plus pay shipping -

That is why they make it in stainless steel if you go to Airmar site I believe they tell you that under the instructional and brochure part. Buy the SS instead. I'm in the market for a B60 20 degree for a Furuno 585, ready to buy they Gil from THT. If you have what I was gonna buy maybe we can work out a deal, I can buy yours and you can re-order a SS one. Just an idea.

Be careful if you clic on the mikes marina website, it took me to the site but when I clicked on a link for boat rates it sent my screen into a funk where the only way out was to call the microsoft number, only problem the number was really scammers trying to gain access to my computer, you could tell the woman was from a foreign country. Almost got me .

Help on Transducer Selection for Furuno 585
cheeseyrider replied to cheeseyrider's topic in This Old Boat
B744V utilizes a flaring block and works up to 24 degree dead rise, other specs are same as B60, its a 600 watt transducer , cone width at 100' & 400' are the same -
In the process of having the transom replaced on my boat so now is the time to go thru- the hull with a transducer . Currently running Furuno 585 with a TM 260 on the transom. Although I get a good screen I can't always see my down rigger balls. At 100 ' depth using 50z transducer cone is 34 ft wide and using 200z only 11' cone. I bought my unit thru Gil from The Hull Truth who recommended this unit. I've read in the past that the B60 is all you need. Looking at the specs for the B60 the cone width at 100' is 83' using 50z. Although not as sensitive and powerful as the TM 260 you would think you would see more fish. You can get the SS246 where you can run dual transducers but you don't have to. With just the 50z transducer at 100' cone width is 45'. Anyone have any experience and thoughts on this which would be appreciated

Ended up dropping off my boat with Clint Samson, Samson Marine in Red Creek, they don't use marine plywood like I would have thought and many people recommend on this site. They use something called green board, comes in sheets like plywood, supposed to be warranted by mfg lifetime. Anyone ever heard of it or use it?

Fishin big "O" Sept/Oct
cheeseyrider replied to cheeseyrider's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Thanks for the help -
I know a lot of guys pull there boats early Sept but for those that don't n continue fishing what can the fishing be like thru Sept and early Oct (first 2 wks) In the 90's Chuck Crueller captain of Rusty Charters out of Fair Haven, bless his soul cause he passed, told me early Oct steelhead are in close 100' n on top, tried it once and caught fish. Weather, wind, rain n waves can be an issue. Any input other areas of lake especially Oak/Point Breeze. Thinking of coming up first week of Oct?

Poked around my transom from the inside with an awl and it seems the softness is just around the starboard side where the bolster meets the transom on the inside. I'm assuming drilling small holes in the transom to look for moisture would be done on the outside at the lowest point near the drain hole? I've had this boat 13 yrs , always garage kept except for short periods outside with the Bimini ,side and front curtains and aft covered to keep out rain. Put 1000 hrs on in that time. Boat in real good shape, seats, motor etc. I'm gonna call around Oak Orchard Marinas to see if they can recommend anyone to replace the bolster and repair the transom. Can anyone recommend anyone from NY closest to Oak Orchard that I can take the boat to when I come up first week in October? .I looked at the Rot Doctor product along with System Three and believe that might work since I believe 90% of transom is solid.

Thanks for the info and responding. I fish out of Oak Orchard, Point Breeze. Is there anyone in that area that is skilled at repairs or assessing my damage. Thinking about coming up to the area end of Sept. ?

Discovered wood shelf on boat rotten almost the whole length on starboard side. My boat has the wood floor covered with vinyl. I was attempting to re-attach the vertical padded bolster that holds items placed on shelf from falling off the shelf when I discovered the rot and this white looking wet and soft fungus coming out from under vinyl. I ripped the vinyl away the whole length. Stuff looked nasty. So I need the shelf replaced and where it met the transom on top of the shelf it just started to soften the transom. Rest of transom seems fine. My cousin who is along on trip is an exterminator and knowledgeable about chemicals informed me he can get a liquid that can be brushed on wood and it will migrate and permeate the wood , kills the fungus and hardens the wood. Not looking to use it on the rotten board but thinking it may stop the transom from more damage Any one else familiar with using something like that on transoms just to stop from spreading? Liquid has to be applied to bare wood to work and takes about two weeks to work. Probably all the vinyl should be ripped up on floor and other shelf and floor and stringers looked at. About three- four years ago I had someone replace part of the floor that was soft and was suppose to fix that shelf. I don't think he did that great of a job cause another soft spot popped up on floor and had problems with shelf again. My boat is a 1990 in relatively good shape. The shelf is glassed to the side of boat and pretty sure it adds support to the hull but but don't know the technical name for it. More concerned with replacing shelf and repairing transom than floor cause I think I could handle the floor and replacing the vinyl as a winter project.. Also wondering how hard it would be to replace floor with starboard or some other material that doesn't need to be covered with vinyl. If necessary willing to take boat back to NY to have work done. I'm from Lehigh Valley and doubt there are a lot of skilled people in my area to do work. I researched old posts under Old Boat and read most of them. Any one have any thoughts or know of anyone that can do the work in eastern Pa. or the closest place in NY Thanks in advance
