I do the same. But with the banana poles i use (aka star fires) they have a lot of bend. Depends on the rod, IMO. I personally don't like that yo-yo feeling of fighting a fish with one.

I bought some under armour charged cotton shirts. They dry fast and help keep you cool/comfortable! I dip my hat in the beer cooler!! Def not the fish cooler...or you'll be covered in flys!!

I think it's personal preference. I personally set my drags and releases tighter than most. Cuz I very rarely get a fish that rips out more than 50 ft on the initial run. But I run lighter action rods that absorb a lot of the initial shock. Ugly stik light 8'3" rigger rods. Eagle claw med light diver rods. And i use very few connections. And check them regularly. Run 30 lbs test/20 lbs leaders. Quality reels with good drags: saltist/sea line reels. Replace leaders, swivels, knots, sharpen hooks. So I have confidence to put the wood to them. I will loosen drag as the fight starts. But I want the hook-set deep when that fish hits. My copper rods are the okuma lead core/copper rods. Which are pretty stiff. So I keep my drags a little looser on those. But still tight enough I can barely pull line off by hand.

Those stats are with blood run mono backing. Which is a bigger diameter than 50 lbs power pro. I have a tekota 800 for my 500 copper. Nice reel! I haven't done the drag upgrade...but will in the future.

I have the blood run on one of my rigger rods and its been flea-free! I too lost a nice fish last year from a failed knot joining a 100 ft section of FF to my main line.

I've fished only evenings (for the past month) and had king bites every time out. 7:00-8:30 being the hottest!

I bought some of that buggspray~helped some but still got bit up. I reapplied every hour.
