Im fairly new fishing LO on my own. I made two trips up in Aug./Sept. and did fairly well considering Ive never fished it. Of course I had help from you guys giving me tips and advice. And one guy inparticular who really helped me out alot making our trips successful.. Anyway, When I was up I used only flashers/flies and flasher meat rigs. Im planning on fishing alot more as time allows this summer and fall. I have a ton of spoons that I have purchased over the years for trolling here in NJ, including some bigger spoons for salmon. When do I try using them? My boat is 18' and I only run 2 down riggers but run 4 rods. Here are my questions: Do you use flashers with spoons? How far off the ball do you run spoons? Is it best to use them in combination with flies (if running 4 lines, do I use 2 spoons and 2 F/F) or just stick with whats working? What are good colors? And is there a particular time of the year that they are better then F/F? Sorry I know its alot of questions, Just trying to learn as much as I can for the upcoming season.. Had this buck come in trailing a doe. Wasnt going to take him but everything was perfect so I sent a spitfire through him. He went 30 yards and I watched him crash, A perfect hunt. Not my bigges rack but a huge body. Dressed at 186 pounds.

I have a 9.9 kicker on the back of my boat so I just pop off the steering rod from the kicker. I can do everything except clip the line to my rigger with one hand. But before that I must have looked like an idiot when I run front to back trying to keep the boat straight

And the boat, I got to say, my boat is a 1983 Manatee, it has impressed the heck out of me. The hull is awesome and it handles big water soo much better then my 19' aluminum boat did. Every time out we get to port and I say I cant believe how well this boat handeled that water. I would love something bigger like a 21 or better but for what this boat is, it handels like a boat much larger then it is. I was watching the bigger boats getting bounced around out there. You just have to be smart and know your limitations but for now this boat does really well on that lake. Of course I wouldnt ever push my luck, especially with my son on board. Jeff

Mark, I never caught an Atlantic, but caught alot of Coho's. I was 100% sure it was a Coho but now you have me second guessing myself. I know the tell tale signs of a Coho, spots only on top of the tail, and the tail folds easily unlike a King. Do Atlantics tails fold easily like a Coho? Either way it was a nice fish but I could kick myself if it was an Atlantic and didnt get a bunch more pics.. But ABSOLUTELY!!! I will be coming up again next weekend... Ive burned so much vacation time already trying to catch these fish but Ive learned so much I am much more confident that if I can locate them I can catch them.. And my wife doesnt give me a hard time at all especially since Im bringing my son back LOL... Im hoping the fish are in the same general area so I can get my son into a nice fat King. That alone for me would make all the work and expense worth everything to me. But after this weekend I have to chill out because opening day bow in NJ starts this Sat Jeff

When we were out the day before we were marking fish in certain areas but we trolled right thru with out a hit, but I did mark waypoints on my gps. After getting frustrated I ended up giving bottom feeder a call and we hooked up in town and he gave me a bunch of tips and advice. The next morning we headed right back to my way points and did what Tood suggested. It was a little rough for my 18' boat so we only ran 2 riggers. We started trolling north and it was only minutes until the first rod went off. We got a 20 pound female in the box! First time ever so it was awesome! A little while laterthe meat rigger went off, another king, before I got that rod back in the water the other rod went again! Another king in the boat!! we did a very rough troll back to the south, with the wind it was hard keeping the boat straight, we were rolling pretty good and my buddy wasnt feeling to good. So we managed to head north again with the wind and it was much easier and smoother. Then Bang! #4, a beautiful 20# male Coho on the 99 rigger. We got him in and before I set that line back out my buddy said "dude before u set that back up I may be in trouble if we dont get out of here" So unfortunately I thought the day was over. Then Wham, my rod went again on my other rigger so I grabbed the rod and the fight was on. At the time Im watching my friend and he was looking pretty bad so I started horsing the fish to get him in and I pulled the hooks out and lost it. So we finished pulling the gear and made the rough ride back to port. So by 9:30Am we were done! But I learned more this weekend then ever before. For me it was a banner day! Thanks to the great people on this site, I managed my first 4 Salmon in my own boat. It felt great!

Yea I was there last week and it does suck! Also its soo steep that my 18' boat took in water the first time I was pulling it out. Now I know to go rediculusly slow when unloading, and go in deeper and float the boat up as I am very slowly pulling out my buddy is winching. If not the water pours into my motor well and into the boat! Im not sure what the deal is, we went there early in the AM and there was a sign on the door with envelopes, it said to leave the money in envelope and write your plate # on it and drop it in the door. That being said, when we came off the water a guy asked us if we paid his morning and we told him that we did. So we spoke for a little while and he explained that from the storms last year he lost his docks and the store was damaged. He couldnt afford to repair both so he opted to fix the docks and close shop. He now has a hot dog cart right by the boat launch. The guy in the hot dog stand is the owner. Dont know if that helps you but the dogs werent bad

We were fishing the same area this weekend. Sat. morning we had 4 hook ups almost right away just after sun up. We lost them, one had my line twisted around the probe cable and others were popping my release and not sticking. We boated a decent laker on the dipsy diver out 250' F/F combo, but it shut right off on us by 10am. I saw about 10 other boats with fish on about the same time. Went back out in the evening and had a dark king up to the boat when he shot under the boat catching my sons line in the prop. Went out Sun. morning and it was rough but when the first storm was coming we high tailed it to the port and got the boat on the trailer as soon as the skies let loose. We'll give it another go this weekend hopefully if I can get back up there. Thanks for the report and congrats for boating a few

I know my boat has limitations, I go out in the ocean striper fishing alot. I will have my son with me so I wouldnt push anything just to get a fish. As a river fisherman I have seen guys dam near kill themselves and others for a fish. To me that doesnt make much sense. If its rough then I wouldnt attempt heading out at all. That being said, Im open to trying a different port if need be. I think I'll start out of the SR on Sat, if nothing is happening then Ill head west. Ill be checking the board while we are up there and see whats going on in the lake. In the meantime, Ill keep checking to see if anyone else will be out this weekend. Thanks for the input, Jeff

My son and I are planning a trip this weekend to L.O, We were going to stay in Pulaski and pull out of Port Ontario only because I know the area from fishing the Salmon River. I have only been in the lake at the mouth of the river when I had my 14' boat. Now I have an 18' boat that I have been gearing up. Got my riggers, kicker motor, X4, GPS, etc. From everything that I have been reading the fish are much further West then I was planning on pulling out from. I dont know any other areas besides what I have read about on this forum. It looks like Sodus Bay is a hot area to launch from. My question is, Where should I pull out of? My boat has a 115 2 stroke that is horrible on fuel and I only have an 18 gal. tank. I dont want to run 30 miles out if I dont have to. We will only be using the 115 to get from point A to point B, once we are out there I have a 9.9 four stroke for trolling. If we pull out of Sodus Bay about how many miles will we need to go to get into deep water? Again, Im not looking for anyones honey holes or anything, I just want the shortest distance to get in to some fish. I am not dead set on pulling out of Sodus, I am open to suggestions from you guys on what Port to pull out of. Then my other problem is a place to stay near that port. If you guys can help me out it would be greatly apreciated. A clean, safe, motel within a few miles from that port would be great if you guys have any suggestions. Im curious, if we go out of Sodus how far out until we hit deep water? If we pull out of Port Ontario it looks like we will have to go pretty far to hit the deep water. Anyway, Nice Job!

So when Im trolling I should just pay attention to my down speed on my X4 and not worry about surface speed, correct? With that, what should my optimum down speed be for targeting kings?

We were trying different directions, I was only using the surface transducer though. I believe its mounted in a perfect location. I was out with my family and didnt have the riggers on the boat so I didnt try the down speed probe. When I go fishing I will run my lures based only on the down speed where I know there are fish and see what happens and adjust my speed accordingly. I guess I just assumed both my gps speed and surface speed on the X4 would be the same.
