PeltHunter replied to fishlander22's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I'm very sorry for your loss fishlander. I do know that they have a youth fishing derby at powdermill park every year for the opening day of trout season. not sure on other kid oriented things in the area though. -
Lake Ontario 2012 - Stats, Thoughts, Observations & Findings
PeltHunter replied to Big Water's topic in Open Lake Discussion
one thing i did see missing. - A little rain and wind/waves are alright on ontario but at the first spotting of electricity in the air no matter how far off get your A+s off the lake, its about to get rough quick -
Yep I know the feeling too we had about 3 grand worth of stuff and are still recovering building all that gear back up slowly. If I found the people who did it I'd have to say I'd probably be in jail and they'd be in the hospital. Nothing pisses me off more than a thief.

Looking for and oppoptunity as a deckhand/mate
PeltHunter replied to BALLS DEEP's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I'm in the same boat. I've talked to a few charter captains so far but one on Here gave me some good advice. Go to whatever port is closest to you in the spring and introduce yourself to as many captains as you can and talk to them in person. -
Congrats man!

Requirements for Mate on Charter Boat?
PeltHunter replied to PeltHunter's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I'm going in the fall, was going to start last year but joined the Air National Guard and had to defer a year. Do you go there? -

The old Michigan Stingers they don't make them anymore but you can find them in some tackle shops they have a weird bend to them that makes the browns go crazy. Blue and white like this.

Looks like it'd be a good day to test out that wide beam on On The Lam IV with those 9-12 footers

Requirements for Mate on Charter Boat?

Thanks guys, so the only thing I need is the random drug testing program, same as I'm going to need for the captains license. And thanks for the tips Capt Vince! -
Hey guys I'm thinking about trying to get a spot on a charter boat for next year to help out bring a little money in at college in Oswego and to get my days in so I can get my USCG captains license. Do you guys know if you have to have a captains license or another type of certificate to work as a mate on a charter boat? Or anyone whose looking for help on a salmon fishing boat paying or not at least I'll be able to get my days racked up for the license. Thanks Paul

some good ones from a few years back

Where did you guys get your captains license courses? I'm looking to get my 6 Pack OUV license, and guide license this summer. Thanks Paul

My uncle thought it would be funny to buy one of the fish off! stickers from fat nancys, we went out three weekends in a row and only got one fish. This was at the end of the 2011 season after we caught fish all year. Our first trip and my only for this year I ripped the sticker off the cooler and we caught 14 salmon in one day.

What mounts do you guys use if you put them on the downrigger balls? I just picked up a TrollPro which is streamlined and the camera sits inside and hardly gets any moisture to it and you don't have to worry about the water pulling it off the ball like you might with a regular mount on the ball. It looks like a pretty slick setup I can't wait to use it

Great post, although I'm only 18 the years of fishing on Lake O has helped me realize many of these things and will probably help me get everything figured out on how to fish this lake by the time I'm in my 60s haha. Honestly one of the best things you can do is get kids into it at an early age as I was young, 8 years old, when I started getting into it. And don't be afraid to let the young people get their hands dirty doing it, whether it be helping get the boat ready, setting lines up, netting fish or getting riggers set up. It may cause some headaches at first but you will be thankful after a year or two.. I'm glad that my dad and uncle kind of forced me to do the dirty work at 10 years old. Eight years later I realize that they set me up to possibly one year be one of the "great" salmon fisherman of this awesome lake we have access to. It's also very rewarding when you take out older guys and they thank you for doing the "hard" work, and putting them on fish while they can sit back relax and just enjoy the day catching some salmon and steelies. -
Dream boats- 48 foot Egg Harbor or 42' Jersey like Top Gun Realistic boats I would want- Thompson 260 Fisherman with the engine under the deck for more room, or a Sea Ray Like On The Lams new boat

Liquid smoke, teriyaki, a little bit of garlic salt, and don't use the jerky gun IMO its hard to get just right. I like to take the kind of junk pieces from when we cut the deer up and use that for jerky and slice the roasts up real thin when we have the deer cut up by the butcher

Well you guys want some details its a long story that ends with a short hunt lol. Last year during bow season I saw this slammer at about 60 yards during bow season he's been a ghost ever since that one sighting. Well then my uncle saw him on his way to work on the 21st of December one day left of muzzle loader of course.. Fast forward to the beginning of November 2012 I'm in Mississippi and my aunt sends me the NY outdoor paper and magazine on the last page of the magazine theres a deer shot in the same county on the 22ND! I could have sworn it was the same deer called my dad and told him he jokingly says that it could't be the same one because he got the same deer with his bow that morning. Next weeks opening shotgun and the Lucky SOB gets to miss it because he won an all inclusive trip to the season finale NASCAR race in Homestead from Ford. The next week Dad, my uncle, and brother go back out to hunt my aunts farm and their cousins farm. My dad was originally going to hunt the other farm but it was cold and blowing wind like crazy so my brother decides to hunt the other farm with more cover with my uncle so my dad stays at my aunts house. He gets down in the stand and 20 Minutes later he sees this slammer coming straight across my aunts yard and down to where he was sitting with his nose planted on the ground. When the old BPS barked he put one Winchester XP through his pump house, the deer only ran about 40 yds and he was done. I wake up to getting pics of the deer from about every family member possible and confirmed it was the same deer that outsmarted me a little over a year ago during bow season and ghosted after that. I was kinda bummed at first but then realized that if I couldn't get this deer then there was no better man than my own DAD to lay him down. Like I said overall its a long story ending with a short hunt.

Can't stand thieves sorry to all the guys who were hit by these scums. We had about 3-4 grand worth of Lake O tackle stolen from our boat in storage a few years back. Im still pissed about that and were just now getting back to where we have a fraction of the gear we had.
