  1. Lake levels are controlled by the consortium and their FIRST responsibility is shipping lanes, especially St. Lawrence Seaway, which very much affects us on Lake Ontario. From what I understand the dredging and other changes in the upper great lakes has affected levels maybe more than anticipated. Flow of water has improved and thus been pushed thru all the lakes and out the seaway. On top of that, low winter snowfalls and other runoffs that are not there at the moment. What water is coming our way is less and not much they can do about it and in fact, they are searching for ways to help raise there levels, which I am guessing might not help us. On top of that, water thru the dams on the St. Lawrence have to be allowed in order to get water levels high enough for the shipping lanes all the way to the ocean. So they can't just "close them down" to raise water levels. They are doing what they can, but although the projection is for another 12 inches of water by June, I think we will all be in trouble by end of summer, if we dont get alot of rain. What I would like to see, but it aint gonna happen, is the DEC to let up on its restrictions and other obstacles to let ramps be repaired, extented or otherwise improved to deal with the lower lake levels. It will be interesting to say the least, how crazy launches and marinas will be. Jason
  2. Wow.....awesome and did anyone notice the black tip shark at 4:31-4:32 of the video? Alot of guts to get in that water in the middle of a frenzy, especially with sharks and insanely fast 100-200-300 lb missles of tuna! I probably would have done it, with other people in the water as well....but kind of crazy doing it alone! Still, that was awesome footage!!!!!!!!
  3. When this topic originally came up, I, along with Brian, got phone calls and emails from Dave Chilson at LOC, as I was very vocal about my feelings. I am not here to personally attack Dave (if he is indeed reading these posts) but to again address what I feel is an injustice to the select fisherman that target Lakers, as well as any deserving fisherman that got 'lucky' with a large laker. The tournament is called a Trout and Salmon Tournament. Not a Trout and Salmon Tourmanent, minus Lake Trout in the Fall. If someone, Dave or whomever, wants to suggest an ALL SALMON Tournament, then we can go from there and form another Derby to run concurrently that includes trout. Brian is correct when Dave mentioned issues with lake trout stocking programs and concerns, and while I am not an expert on populations, I have noticed more lakers in my boat in the last couple of years, then 5-10 years ago. However, in addition to that, Dave also mentioned the concern (people apparently complaining to Dave) that only a select number of families/boats are taking 75% (or whatever amount) of the Lake Trout payouts specifically in the fall. My thought has always been, kudos to the Barber's, Klejdys', Yablonski's and Trump's! They are masters of catching lakers and if we want to earn some of that money, we need to fish where they fish or learn to catch larger fish. But to punish them and subsequently everyone else because they are good at something....is in the words of Don Supon...elitist. I am in favor of raising weigh in minimums in hopes that more fish would be returned to the water, if they were not going to be weighed. Lakers at least should be raised, given the averages I see. Maybe or maybe not with Browns and Steelheads. I also think that either getting rid of daily payouts or reducing that to ONE large fish of the day might help avoid some peoples concerns that the top laker families win multiple payouts. Personally i dont care either way, but just trying to help some people's angst at those that are successful. However eliminating just one fish, from just one specific derby is in everyway a slap at those that target lake trout in the fall. And that includes me, when maybe the king bite is off, and there can be some very nice sized Lakers off the Genny/I-bay area. I will say that I will fish ALL three derbies as normal, but I am disappointed in the LOC team that made this decision, in a vacuum, with out more consoltation with LOU, and the everyday Lake O fisherman that does more for this fishery and economy, then the uninformed, average person that hires a charter for the derby or only fishes occasionally and doesnt even know the rules have changed or why. If your reading this Dave......again, this has been a terrible injustice! I appreciate the time and energy you and everyone on the LOC board puts into this tourney, but this one rule change has been extremely illtaken. Jason Herbst
  4. All the information the guys have posted is spot on. Just adding my two cents. For strength, i use the Diawa Heartland diver rods...just take a beating and never have an issue. As for flasher/flyies..... I love green nuclear, mtn dew glow/crush and white glow/crush...any of them with white, green, glow or blue flies. Those have been working the best for me. Now what is critical is getting divers down to the fish. That is always the challenge because of speed, down currents and temps. Rule of thumb on a number 2.5 setting....about 1/3 of the line you have out, is your depth. So if you have 240 foot of line out on a standard dipsy, trolling around 2.5mpg sog, you can figure your around 80 foot down. Probably 70-80 foot on average. I run two divers most of the time and to keep them at different depths, I run one MAG dipsy on a number 1 setting, off one side of the boat..... and at that setting the depth is about 1/2" of the line out...so I will run 200-220 foot of line, to get the diver down to 100+ fow. Then off the other side of the boat i run a standard dipsy at 2.5 setting from 200-300 feet back. Again, how much line you let out, is going to depend on where the fish are, what depth your at....etc. Early in the spring/summer you might only have 90-120-165 foot of line out and in the summer you might put out 300+ foot of line. My key is running different size dipsy's off each side and occassionally I put on a small dipsy with a spoon over the top of the mag diver to cover that 40-60fow of water where some steelies and higher fish are hanging. okay...that was more like 4cents...but you get the picture!
  5. Chris, Troy at Warren's Hook, Line & Sinker is going to run one out of Sodus on July 20, 21st viewtopic.php?f=52&t=36536&start=15 J
  6. one more for Gill-T's response. I use the same set up for my riggers. I run my divers on steelwire, so no issues there!
  7. yellow/green and white/glow.... blacks and purples have not been working for me the last couple yrs, when they seemed to be hot a few years ago. Maybe because of the flasher/fly combo's i am running???? in either case, ANY dipsy, is a good dipsy!!!!
  8. Price reduced to $6700......
  9. TTT - Price reduced to $7000. PS: I take the advice of this LOU community very seriously. PM if you have thoughts on the value of the boat. Its hard to know exactly what something is worth, I only know what I bought it for and things I have added. I know winter is not exactly the "best" time to sell!
  10. ********* SOLD *********** Selling a 1986 Grady White Tournament 192. This is a 19foot open bow Grady with a 200 hp Outboard Johnson VRO engine. This boat is clean and ready for all sorts of fishing, including fully loaded for Trout and Salmon on Lake O or any of the finger lakes. Boat has a 45 gallon gas tank. It seats 7 comfortably. It has a bimini top, aft cover for fronts seats and capt. chair area, and a full boat cover for storage or trailering, bought new in fall 2012. Has dual batteries, with Perco switch. Electronics include a new West Marine VHF580 marine radio installed Spring 2012 and a Garmin 441S fish finder and GPS with Great Lakes chip bought and installed Fall 2011. Also includes two anchors, one sand, one mud. Boat has a small bait/fish well in floor (not a live well) and includes a medium sized mounted ice/fish chest behind the captains chair. (Also makes for an additional seat at times). I have fit salmon upto 25 lbs in this cooler, but its tight. Includes: - 9.9 Mariner outboard kicker motor. including 6 gal gas tank, EZ steer connector rod to main engine and mounting plate. I have trolled 10 hours using kicker and still had some gas left in 6 gal aux tank. - 2 Cannon Uni-troll downriggers with 200 foot of cable, on low profile gimbal mounted swivel plates. These are telescoping cannon's upto 48" and have the additional mounted 2 rod holders and included are two -10lb weights. - 2 gimbal mounted - triple rod holders, aluminum spray painted black. These rod holders have 4 locking positions up/down and 4 positions swiveling side to side. I used them for both Dipsy Diver rod holders in the summer, as well as running planner boards in the spring. Very versatile. Boat is in storage and paid for already til spring. The engine has been maintained by Pugsley Marina on Rte 104 in Ontario and is in good running order. I pull my kids on a tube with the boat, and we do a lot of perch fishing, along with the trout and salmon trolling. There is a 2 foot swim platform in the stern corner, opposite side of the kicker motor, which allows easy access on and off the boat. Boat and engine weight is approx. ~2500lbs, but loaded with gas/equipment and trailer I estimate 3500lbs total. I originally trailered the boat with a Dodge Caravan and its 3.8L V6 engine, before purchasing the Chevy Trailblazer I have now. That is why I originally purchased the boat, because it was light enough to trailer with a van and hit different lakes and areas, but am now looking to upgrade to a larger boat. This Grady handles 3-4 footers on Lake O extremely well (and I am sure you all know that), but is why I purchased the Grady. Their hull design and beam width even on a 19 foot boat, gives you great comfort and stability even on windy days, trolling 5-6 miles off shore. Attached are a couple of pics from the last couple of years, but I had not taken "formal" pics for selling the boat before I had put it in storage. I do apologize for that, because of this some pics are out of date. The trolling plate is gone off main engine at this point, and the original pic showing kicker does not show EZ bracket that was added a couple weeks later, but can be barely seen in the one photo looking out stern of boat. If you are seriously interested in the boat, I have made arrangements with the storage location to be able to view the boat, with 72 hours advance notice, but it is covered and winterized. Price now...$6700 OBO Call Jason at 585-820-7338 to discuss further. thanks guys for looking. PS: kids in pic, not included!
  11. Ya beat me to the punch, Brian. I think its BS as well if its about laker conservation. Then take it out of all 3 of the tournaments for a period of time, to increase numbers. But like you, I have seen a large increase in laker catches the last couple of years. Hell, half the time i am trolling for kings, I am getting lakers off the deep dipsy's, on SD/flies. I can understand why some people are upset at how those Niagara guys hammer the lakers and take alot of the prize money, but that is life. If fisherman dont like it, get better at fishing for lakers or target other fish, like Browns, which I am gonna have to learn to fall fish better for. I am disappointed by all this and hope that a decision will be reversed in a year or two. I guess in the meantime, I will have to fish differently in late August! or head to the east end!!!!!!! Jason
  12. I have sent an email to Dave and asked for his side of the story. What is FACT and what is FICTION. I have asked if there was or could be an Open Town Hall meeting, for all of us to discuss. I know the Yablonsky's, the Barber's and the Klejdys's have dominated lake trout, but i am happy for that and the challenge we all have to beat them or any other fisherman out there. Many times we dont field a full 20 steelhead on the leaderboard, because there are not as many of them as lake trout, but we dont eliminate that division, so we can keep fisherman from keeping them when they are caught. I dont see logic in eliminating lake trout but I want to hear from Dave or the LOC and what is really happening and if its etched in stone...etc! What's next, eliminating Mexico Bay in the fall, cause we are taking too many spawning Salmon out of the water? Okay, enough of my rant, before I really get started. Jason
  13. Good for you!!! Sorry you didnt get anything but perch, but I am jealous. I spent 3 hrs tearing off equipment and winterizing the boat to put into storage this week! I wanted to fish so bad, but didnt have time in the schedule. to trying!!!
  14. need dimensions H x L x W and possible pics to see where hose attachments are, and where sending unit is.
  15. I cant confirm Olcott, but I will tell you I trolled October 26th off Bear Creek (half way between I-Bay and Sodus Bay essentially) and worked water from 8fow along the shore, out to 110 fow. I found a 'normal' May kind of fishing climate....55degrees on top and fish holding in that 40-70 foot down. I found a couple small bait pods and found the 70-90fow of water held some browns in that 60foot range. I only went 1 for 2, once I found them.....didnt play around too much with lures, but ran 1 diver, SD/Fly, along with two riggers, one pulling a stinger NBK and the other pulling a Fire Tiger Evil Eye. The diver took a rip (might have been a laker, as I was keeping it as close to bottom as I could) and the NBK took a small brown. But the screen was alot more active than I thought it might be. Speed was normal 2.3-2.5 SOG. Tight Lines
  16. Cant offer him what Heather and I already drank, Rich!!!!!!! Nice Hando....why'ya bust on Fifty-Cent!
  17. Awesome!
  18. nice job and nice new ride Kyle!
  19. Just a curiosity question, but how did you manage to already fish the 11th, 12th and 16th??? Cause I want to do it also!!!!! And NICE report and great fish!!!
  20. Nice....glad to see I wasnt the only slightly psychotic person that fished from 6-8:30 as well. When that wind kicked up at 8:30....it was 15 minutes more and we were gone. You did one better than us....got into one king early (about 6:45) that took the white SD/blue fly 80' back on the mag diver, over 55fow. A very nice 19lb king that my brother-in-law was more than excited to land. Screen was good, but couldn't buy another hit, no matter direction and speed! Oh well, that's september fishing too!
  21. That is an awesome year Brian. Many of us might not have a decade of accomplishments and fish like that, let alone one season! GREAT JOB!!!!!! [ Post made via BlackBerry ]
