  1. Glad your not stuck in traffic! How are the waves now that ur out there? Temps staying consistent as you troll north? [ Post made via BlackBerry ]
  2. Aint that the truth. And the way the fish have been hitting this year, it seems worse than other years. Have lost a couple SD and Flies ....and one whole set up including the Dipsy. And then there are the riggers with sliders that make me wonder why I run sliders, cause its always the risk your gonna lose both spoons! Oh well.....I eat plenty of "free" fish in the summer!!!!!
  3. I hear ya Nick. Am suppose to take a friend and his two sons out tomorrow morning. I am hoping storms pass early overnight and any shift in the winds from SE to S and then towards the SW will allow me to get a couple of hours of near shore fishing from 6am to 10-11am tomorrow morning. I will watch for any Live reports and let you know how we are doing, assuming we do get out and there is activity. I will most likely stay with the inside waters (less than 200fow), unless its totally dead. Just dont want to run out deep with the wind and weather this unstable. Hope you can get out this evening...even for a little bit. CYA Jason
  4. I second that.......my concern would be a solid king hit might break it out or rip it right out of the rod holder. My gunwhale angle and made for diver rod, rod holders keep it secure enough for me to not worry, but If I put it in my cannon rod holders, I would probably back the drag way off and use a rubber band from wire to reel handle to allow you to use less drag, so when the fish hits, it pulls line, not the rod as much. My two cents
  5. Awesome job Rich .......but can't help noticing her salmon looks bigger than anything you've caught? and that one you "think" was 30lbs, but forgot the scale, doesnt count!!! just kiddin.......GREAT JOB
  6. Jeff, Great to meet you and Matt at the Salmon Slam. Sorry your selling....If I could deal with that big of a boat, I would....as it is a great price as loaded for $8500. Hopefully your getting something else bigger or smaller to still fish with! Good luck! Jason
  7. I don't know......almost looks like an Atlantic to me. IT aint a king or a steelie....that I can say for sure. But I am used to the scales on my coho's looking different and falling off in my hands the minute it hits the net and my hands. But I am not an expert by any means!
  8. NICE...... I agree, the bait fish a few miles east of you this morning, were all in the 80-110 depth where I was. I was able to stay inside of 160 foot. And watching the kiddos catch fish, is more rewarding then catching them yourself!
  9. so you ate one of Nick's lamprey pies!?!?!? So did I....not really that bad, could have used some hot sauce. and YES, I have seen more this year and larger than normal. I assumed it was due to the warm winter!
  10. It does kind of look like it doesn't it. Don't actually own a gaff....that is actually just the hook on my fish scale. I had been trying to hold the fish out away from my body using the scale and take a picture with the camera phone.....but it was not far enough, so I just laid the fish down, leaving the scale hooked in its gills, before putting it back into the lake! But thank you for the concern, I wasn't even aware of the concern with gaffs. J
  11. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: OuttaLine ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): 8/7/12 Time on Water: 6am-8am Weather/Temp: sunny....60's Wind Speed/Direction: south5-10mph Waves: 1' building to 3' Surface Temp: 73 Location: north east of Bear Creek LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 4 Total Boated: 3 Species Breakdown: King, rainbow, laker Hot Lure: SD/Fly Trolling Speed: 2.5ish Down Speed: Boat Depth: 120-150 Lure Depth: 80' rigger, 200' mag diver, 250' std dipsy ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Okay, sometimes it pays to play hooky. Decided i was going to work from home today and as such, would sneak out early for a couple of hours fishing at first light. Got to the launch around 5:30, slipped out to 100foot and dropped lines just before 6am. Had a yellow NBK on the rigger set down 60foot to start and then moved it to 80' as it got deeper and there were baitfish marked. But NOTHING hit the rigger, so last we will talk about that line. Set the Starboard diver w/std dipsy on#2, with a green nuclear SD and green hammer fly, back 225' and then set the port diver w/mag dipsy on #1 with a white pearl glow SD and blue hammer fly back 150' to start. The south wind was really picking up as I got out to 120fow and it was easier to head north east, since I was flying solo. Starboard diver goes ......thought at first it was a laker, got it to the back of the boat and it was an absolutely beautiful 6lb rainbow. See the pic below, which does not do it justice for the color it was. Just then, port diver goes, i backed the drag off, but i wanted to get this rainbow back in the water before worrying about the other fish. Well that cost me the fish, but the rainbow is back for another day! As I re-set lines and sent a text of the bow to a few friends, I slipped out to 145fow and the starboard dipsy starts thumping and screaming like I have not seen my rods do. I have a 10'6" Daiwa Heartland river rod and this fish looked like more like I had hooked bottom. All I can say is that I am not a salty dog, with 25+ years of downrigging, but I have been doing this now for 10 years and have never seen a rod double like this and start screaming like this. I backed the drag off....grabbed it and just proceeded to watch 300......400......500....I put a little drag back on it, just to get ready...fish took a run at the boat.....reeled as fast as I could to catch up to it....it turned and took me to 600'....All I could think is I wish I could clear lines, cause if I get another hit now....I'm screwed. This fish was a beast coming to the boat. Thank goodness it did tire, cause when I got it to the back of the boat, I knew it was my record. It did manage to go around the downrigger cable, no matter hard I tried for it not to. Put the rod in a holder, backed the drag off, grabbed the dipsy and leader and managed to slip the net under this fish and there......it was over. It was now in the boat. My scaled bounced between 27-28 lbs. FINALLY a landed king over 25lbs! Have had a few in that 23-25lbs....have handed rods to other people that turned out to be 27lb kings.....but am happy to have landed my own 27lber! As I recently read from someone, I used my bowline, did a quick slip knot over the tail and let the fish drag in the water for a few minutes while I cleaned and reset everything. By then, the fish seemed much more alert and I let it go, to hopefully spawn a new generation of fish. I was happy that it was not over 30lbs, cause that is my bogey for mounting it and I dont really have the $$ right now. HAHAHAHAHAHAH Waves and wind were making it hard to fish solo at that point....I pulled a laker on the mag diver shortly after, and then decided to call it a day at 8am. Still......3 for 4 in 2 hrs, with a couple fish like this.....I call that a GREAT DAY OF PLAYING HOOKY.... Tight Lines....Jason ====================
  12. Agree with howitzer above....hit depths from 100-200+ fow, trolling north and when you get a bite or two, stay in the area for a few minutes. My key to catching fish is spread and variety, and varying your speeds at time. Start with a 2.5 SOG speed and go up or down from there if your not catching fish. Not sure if your fishing alone or with someone, but assuming there are 2 of you and you can run upto 6 poles, the key is getting lures at multiple depths. Hopefully you have fished with dipsy divers, because this allows you to fish out to the sides and down, while also running your riggers. My initial set up is always one dipsy off each side of the boat, both pulling spin doctors with flies. White or green spin doctors, with green or blue or glow flies seem to work best for me. At this time of the year, I would set both dipsies at 2.0 to 2.5 settings and run one of them 275-300 feet back and the other 200-225 feet back. This should park the lures in that 50-70' foot of water I run the deep rigger at 80-90 feet with a pro-troll flasher and fly, and then run a second stacked line on that about 40 feet up with a spoon. Run your leads from the rigger only about 10-15 feet. I am not a fan of long leads, except on the deepest ball. Too many chances of other lines getting tangled if you run long leads. I run the other rigger at around 20 above the deep rigger, also with a spoon. I.e if 90 foot on deep rigger, I would run 70 foot on the other rigger...or 80-60 foot...something like that. For the 6th rod, you can stack it 30 foot above your shallow rigger or run something like a 10 color leadcore out the chute, directly behind the boat, to keep any high fish in the top 30 fow honest. Vary colors on the spoons, silver and bright colors on a sunny day and darker colors on a cloudy day. IMHO If you do it right you should be able to put 6 lures in the water from 30' to 90', or around every 10 feet. As you get hits in the same area or at the same depths, make some adjustments to put more lures in or around that depth, but dont try and bunch everything or you will find out how quickly a fish or current can tangle lines. Watch reports on here to see what temps and depths people are getting hits. Since it changes daily, we cant really tell you too far in advance what specific depth will be the hot one....so watch, listen and search. Good luck
  13. Hard not to say some of the same things that have already been said above. What I can tell you is that our Vietnam Vet, George, was an extremely humble man, with a heart of gold and in the end....more appreciative than i could understand. It is I (and i am sure many of us that have not served) that are so appreciative of the cost these men and women have paid, for us to have the freedoms to fish whenever we want! The fishing was not the best, and many of us realized that. Personally we went 2 for 4, but George landed both of his fish and the smile he had on the 16lb king of his, was "priceless". I was proud to have been part of this. I was glad we could take their minds off of other things for a little while. I was glad to meet so many of you that I also only knew by your handles. And lastly....Absolutely THANK YOU to Nick and Theresa Allers and all the volunteers that made this possible. I can hardly wait for next year! Jason Herbst and Heather Lowe

  15. Here Here......!! Second that thought. Great work Nick, Teresa and EVERYONE. Jason
  16. Someone remind me to keep Tavion (our dog) away from Ray this weekend I remember catching eels on the Hudson and our italian relatives giving us a hard time for not keeping them! I just wish they were easier to clean.... maybe if I use my teeth to hold it.... [ Post made via Android ] I'm Italian and I totally know what you mean. Any food, is edible food.....even eel and I think Nonno tried to make Carp once.....Lesson Learned! As for Dog....well lets just say on my first trip to China, I ate what they affectionately call "Black Chicken". Nice that they told me 3 months later what "Black Chicken" was . Sadly.....tastes like chicken. Not that I want any more or will be looking at Tavion that way! One and Done!!!!!! pheww
  17. Hey, I never ate perch eggs until someone wrote they were edible and actually made a decent meal. I looked past what you see and think and tried it....and it was good. I can believe lamprey is good, if done right.....I've been around many parts of this planet for work and eaten many things that I would have thought was unedible.....and well.....most taste pretty good!!!!! Not all.....but alot! Glad to hear it was tasty...but not sure I am gonna keep lamprey on my boat and fillet it! ICK
