The curse of the immediate fish X2. Saturday set up around 120 fow. 2 riggers, 2 divers and a 300 copper down the chute. 300 copper fires 15 minutes in and produces a smallish steelie on a green and silver pro king. Later a hit and miss on a #5 chinook diver set on 4 back 225'. That was it. Went as deep as 350 fow and back. Covered depth from 30 down to 115 down. Spoons and flies. Sunday set up around 100 fow. Same spread. 300 copper fires 15 minutes in again. Looked like the same steelie and on the same spoon. First ever LO fish for my friend. Nothing for the rest of the day but a hit and miss on a rigger with a spinny and fly down laker deep over 130 fow. Started to fish the chickens a little but it was getting too hot. Headed for shore and a cold bloody Mary. No pics, got em both back in the water ASAP. Every time we get an immediate fish the rest of the day is dead.

Question; Pros/Cons of using a trolling plate?
jlogger replied to Todd in NY's topic in This Old Boat
I have heard guys recommend drilling some holes in the plate to prevent excessive exhaust back pressure issues. I don't personally have any experience with them just something I heard. -
Been there and done that. Basically the system becomes a 24 volt system. I cooked my alternator same as you. The circuit breaker for the bilge pump tripped, no big deal. The fuse on the kicker blew, which was no big deal except that I didn't realize it until I went to fire it up on the next trip. No other damage except the crushing blow to my ego. 15 years as a tractor trailer mechanic working with parallel and series parallel battery systems without blowing anything up and I F-up my boat the first time I hook up the batteries. Awesome! All said and done you should be good to go after the alternator if you did not turn the key on.

Fished out of I-Bay Saturday and Sunday. Saturday went 6 for eight with 5 browns and a steelie and threw in a bonus seagull. Seagull took a silver, black and orange Smithwick off the surface which also took a couple of browns. Blue and silver J-11 did well and picked up one on a NK28 watermelon and one on a froggy challenger. Besides dropping a decent fish I also dropped a, new to me, torpedo rigger weight and my sub troll probe. Not a good first trip thing. All the browns and the seagull released to swim or fly away. Sunday only went 1 for 2. Having some steering difficulties and maneuvering in the lake traffic and waves was too much to deal with. Stuck to the back of the bay. The one we got was on the NK28 watermelon right behind the boat probably 10' down and 12' back. Maybe 10 lbs. Seems like the class of browns hanging around I-Bay area is nice this year.

Don't know much about the smallmouth anymore. It used to be hot just off of Hedges point, four mile creek, years ago but I heard the Zebra Mussels and Gobies ended that. There is good Pike fishing in the bay that time of year, always great Sheephead fishing in the bay also. There will be plenty of Brown Trout action between the bay and Hedges on the lake.

I started using them last year. They will prevent theft by someone who is unprepared but I think they could be defeated with a run of the mill hammer. It looks like if someone were to take a good swing at the plastic knobs on the Scotty mounting bolts it would be all over, Unless of course those mounting bolt knobs are steel underneath the plastic.

L & M thanks. I think your name came up in a conversation I was having regarding this last night. I'll replace that anode with a magnesium one. One other question, what is the recommended interval for having my Alpha One out drive serviced? Not just oil change but pulling it off and doing a tear down and inspection. Jack

It seems like my anodes are not taking any beating from corrosion but my out drive is bearing the brunt instead. I pulled my prop and there is what seems to me to be excessive corrosion behind it. Last year I noticed alot of corrosion on the out drive case. I cleaned up the case and the anodes real well at the beginning of last season. Do I have some sort of grounding problem? The transom was replaced two years ago, is it possible that a grounding wire between the engine and the out drive got missed or something like that? Should I try to clean up the corrosion from behind the prop or will I do more damage than good? Thanks
