  1. USCG Captains, Just got Friday off and would like to fish Lake Ontario with my boys. Party of three--maybe four. Looking for a morning charter going out of Rochester-- Genesee River or IBay preferably but will consider Sandy Creek or Oak Orchard. At this late date, I thought I'd post this request instead of contacting various Captains by phone or email. If you have an open space or cancellation that needs filling, please PM me. Thanks, Chas
  2. Yeah, That's what it's all about!
  3. Way cool! Thanks Guppy and TBum!
  4. Perfect end to a perfect day!
  5. It's also a lot easier jigging in 170fow through a stationary hole in the ice instead of trying to steady a moving boat.
  6. Dtmasportsman, Nice pics. How does the season run in DE? With the NY season going through 4/15/15, the daily limit at 25 and an unlimited possession limit, what's not to like? Congrats on the baby! Chas
  7. Welcome aboard!
  8. TESSIER, Hopefully we'll see more and more of these birds over the years in this area. Went to Syracuse on Friday to the NCAA Regionals--GO SPARTANS!-- and saw LOTS of geese congregating along the throughway--Canadas and Snows, especially in the areas west of exit 42. Montezuma was pathetically void of birds--maybe because of the icing but I have a sense that the incredible proliferation of cattail growth and subsequent loss of surface water might push the migratory flocks to the west which would benefit us in this section of the flyway. Don't forget to post an update on your hunt. Chas
  9. Thanks for the pics. Make sure the yard is free of bearfood-- especially garbage cans, bird feeders and pic-a-nic baskets.
  10. Over the last few years, New York Outdoor News has had a couple of articles regarding snows. They were seriously endangered back in the day and successful conservation methods were applied both here and in Canada. Fast forward, and the flock has experienced massive growth and, as a result, is apparently causing extensive ecological damage not only in their nesting range up north but also in their wintering range. Looks like the wildlife biologists both here and in Canada have declared war and want to thin the herd, which accounts for the long seasons and generous limits. Hopefully, we'll see more and more of these birds in WNY. Chasing them fills the shooting gap from late goose to turkeys.
  11. Nice bird! Did he have friends?
  12. C2. I'm just kinda curious, never targeted snows, but I read that you gotta have a massive decoy array and serious total camo on top of being mobile--basically being able to chase them from field to field. Congrats to your son. Did he have an experience like that or was he ambushing them as they came/left feeding fields? Chas
  13. Today's D&C had a panoramic picture on page 3 of a huge flock of snow geese on Canandaigua Lake. Anybody know anything about the migration there? Doesn't the hunting season for them go into April? Anyone doing any hunting?

  15. PERCHZILLA!
  16. Les, We were down in that area a couple of years ago with the kids and took a field trip to see manatees. There is a viewing area 5 or 6 miles south of Tampa off 41 on the east side of the bay that is situated across a small inlet adjacent to Tampa Electric generating plant. The warm discharge attracts manatee during the cool season. I remember a good sized parking lot and free access to the site which included a dock area, observation tower and a jetty to walk out on. We not only saw manatees in abundance but also saw tarpon in the 5 to 6ft range as well as other varieties of fish that I couldn't identify. If you have the time and are looking to see something unusual by NY standards, it was way cool. Chas
  17. Fished Branchport today. Went on at the state park boat launch at 9am and found minor slush about 10 feet out that quickly turned hard. There were about 10-15 people on the ice and the number stayed consistent throughout the day. We went southwest about 500 yards and settled in to fish in 171 FOW. The pull was easy but you gotta be careful because the melt/freeze cycle has turned the surface very slick. Where we fished, the ice measured 11" with 10" of clear ice and 1" of refrozen melt. Marked fish 90-165 feet--jigged using white bucktails and twisters--4 hits, landed 2--one 22" skinny, one 27" fatty. Tipups were silent but the hole water froze to about 1/2" in about 2hrs. Back in at 2pm. After a sunny day, there was a mild runoff coming out of the large drain down from the launch with some open water there. Water over ice under the docks but the ice seemed firm and bore the weight of my 22 y/o who, despite my better judgement, wanted to see how thick the ice was. 19 degrees forecast for Penn Yan tonight so it seems like the season isn't over yet. Tight lines, Chas
  18. abc, Way cool pics. Chas
  19. I'm anal retentive and disarray can drive me nuts so I keep sane by micromanaging the snow in the driveway-- keeping the edges crisp-- you know the drill.
  20. Great catch!
  21. Awesome headdress dude!
  22. Back in the day, Nantucket Nectars started out with a couple of guys delivering juice to boats anchored in the harbor. Domino's Pizza began with one little pizza place selling to college students at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. Who knows where things could go?
  23. Yea, How about the long distance yote kill video that is linked to the attack video. Check out the link at the bottom of the buck attack video @ Here's a little something to even the score. That's what I'm talking about!
  24. ERABBIT, Thanx for the pix of the deer and turkeys! Sportsmen and hunters do much more for wildlife than the tree huggers who just complain and degrade outdoorsmen.
