  1. This is why I fish for fun and don't enter any of the tourneys. My crew is my 13yr old son, my grandad and I. On calm days my son or my grandad drive alright and I can work the rods to trigger bites. However, any chop over 2-3' and I'm stuck at the helm and the rods get little attention
  2. I used the Doug fir because I'm a contractor and I had it as a leftover rafter, plus its beautiful with a coat of stain and several coats of poly. I used huge fender washers and lock nuts on all mounting plates and it was plenty strong.
  3. I have 2 big jon slide and lock bases and 6" pedestals that were used for the board I had on the back of my boat. I even have a 2x10 of stained Douglas fir that had 4 riggers mounted to it if you want it.
  4. U can download the upgrade on an sd card and install that to see if it helps. Search "lowrance hds software update" and you'll find it
  5. I'm interested. Ppr or standard scoring?
  6. I don't know chas, I would have to see some pictures of the bikinis before I could suggest anything
  7. I know right where it is. Plenty of room and a very short drive to the harbor. I heard The owner remodeled the place with plans of building little cabins along the runway for fly inn guests. Doesn't look like that ever took off but I hope u enjoy your stay.
  8. Thats a great trip. Love them crappies. I fish black lake in feb for three days to stock up on the tasty critters.
  9. I have my grandad to thank for that. He got me into the big lake fishing and is always the first person I ask to go out with me. Him and my sons.
  10. That's a free slider and how I usually run it. Simple and gets a "free" spoon in another strike zone. If u want a fixed slider, just lower your rigger 10' or so, half hitch a rubber band to main line and connect the slider swivel through the rubber band. Let the rigger down slowly to avoid tangles. The fixed slider this way will allow u to cover 40' of water column for example with riggers at 60' and 80', and sliders at 50' and 70'.
  11. We picked up the thermo cline with our old electronics in the 80's and 90's. just experiment with it. That's the beauty about this kind of fishing. You can catch fish with bare bones equipment by putting together all the things you've learned and putting time out on the water. We had a 15' orange wooden boat with homemade down riggers when I was a kid. We fished offshore with the freighters in pretty wavy conditions in that sucker. I remember taking 1st-2nd-or 3rd in the kids division of the Fall derby every yr. out of our little woody, and later our 16' Starcraft.
  12. More lines means more problems. I've found, at least on my boat, a simple 2 rigger w/ sliders and 2 wire diver spread is not only better at catching fish, but its more efficient. Once u deploy a chute rod or planers, u greatly reduce the ability to turn around and pass through an active pod of fish quickly. With that said, there are days where those planer and chute rods simply catch all the fish. Start small and work your way up, adding an extra line at a time on slow days.
  13. I LOVE my Fish Hawk. However, the Thermocline should show up on your sonar if u turn the sensitivity up enough. Fish a line or two below it, a line or two above, and a couple in it. The fish will tell u where they prefer given the present conditions.
  14. Straight 30#. The less knots, the better.
  15. At 200 kHz, I don't even mark my riggers. Even the probe rigger. With 83 kHz I mark them down to 110' with the probe and 14 lb torpedoes. I am going to try split screen with the 200 kHz to compare sometime if theres room on the screen. This is just my experience.
  16. Colder. More like 42-46 deg. U can and will catch them out of temp, especially early in the am but it seems the bigger fish, on average, hang out in the ice water.
  17. I use 83khz and never had a good picture using 200khz. I should try split screen sometime to compare. I also run max ping speed and 4x scroll. Slow trolling is the setting I use and -1 sensitivity. Noise rejection and surface clarity both med
  18. Nice report. Didn't make it out this weekend but wish we did. One screamer makes it all worthwhile. They are getting pretty dark.
  19. Nice. I couldn't convince the family to get up early. Once the Mrs. decided not to, my boys followed suit. Oh well, I have a few batches of salmon to smoke then maybe an afternoon run is in order. Try fishing in 130-150' and 80' down as the sun gets higher. White pearl spinnies and mtn dew spinnies. Good luck
  20. Glad to see another report from olcott. How deep did u fish?
  21. http://www.johnsonpropertiesny.com/ You can check this out as well. I live here and know Linda manages some cottages set up for fisherman rentals. The Mandavilles own Brookins Inn on East Ave in Newfane which is a nice updated place
  22. We catch fish all through sept and into oct. I guess it all depends on when the majority have made their way into the creeks. I'm done by early to mid sept due to the incoming bow season, and pulled the boat even earlier last yr due to the low water levels.
  23. I had to tie new leaders after last weekend's break offs on the stock 30# big game Rhys Davies leaders. I haven't been that mad since I lost two 16 lb torpedos in 85Fow near Wilson on something in the water. We were also having a hook up issue on the meat rigs on the wire divers where we would get a lot of "short" hits, hooking less than half the bites we received. I figured the tourney rigs with 50# floro would solve both issues and I'm sold after today. I will definitely keep an eye on the spot you mentioned Gill-t, as I'm always checking leaders and retying a lot.
  24. Thanks. Glad we pulled rods at 470' and ran back in to 250.
