Haha no problem Vince. I was searching for some more info on observers and came across this and figured because it was about a year ago maybe it might be coming back up.
I am putting it on a uni troll so I will see. Thanks for the incite guys, I sent them an email cancelling my order but received one back stating it was already shipped. Hopefully its not a $70 piece of garbage
My father used to always fish the big east end tournaments but hasn't fished them in 10+ years. I have fished small walleye tournaments but they got a little boring having $150 payouts and only a few competitors. I have several buddies that would love to observe on real tournament boats haha. I haven't fished any salmon tournaments but got bit by the salmon bug a couple years ago and cant stay away anymore.
I am a teacher so having summers off and no kids yet I need something to occupy my time and why not have a little fun and make some friends in the process. Is it general practice to pay observers? I figured I would just share the pot even tho they might not catch the fish they are still there with my boat and team.
Thanks for all the incite Captain Vince it is greatly appreciated and that goes for the rest of you guys too.
Now I just need to save some cash for the bigger buy in tournaments.

Looks like I might be picking up a standard horizon with DSC I think its a gs1000x. The antenna I am researching a little to figure the best for the money but it looks like a shakespeare 8' 6db.
They dipsys won't work on rail mounted holders. You need something really stout for dipsys I found that out the hard way (almost lost my rod into the lake) I am running them in gunnel mounts or my extra downrigger holders.
What do you guys feel is a good amount of money on the antenna? I was looking at a cobra antenna 5' then attaching it to my bimini. It will be about 12' from water level to the tip.

Ok I am in the market for a vhf radio (never had one before) I am looking for something that is primarily used for tournaments just to hear starts and info. I dont fish off shore to the point I cannot see land. I also need an antenna.
Any suggestion for a budget $200 or under?

I have read the rules and I had a question about the observer. We supply an observer and is randomly placed on a boat or that observer will be placed on our boat and your observers are randomly placed?
