Yup Tony sells them at a good price and my time would make it more expensive to build one than to buy one from Tony. Here is my setup from Great Lakes Planners. It has worked great. One thing I will recommend is to buy a couple extra handles as they do get a little sun rotted and break easily if you are adjusting frequently. Also I put mine up so it is about 6' 1" off the deck (i'm 6') and anyone short has a tough time grabbing rods. I can do it pretty easily but my dad (5' 8") has a tough time. The last picture shows I lowered the bar a good 8" to allow the rod tips to shoot higher in the air. My boat is on the left, You can see how I mounted my lights and the uprights.

I have 2 wire setups and 2 braid. I use both year round the key is to have large diameter braid (50lbs. is what mine are) and the fleas will be minimal. I have had fleas build up on wire dipsy and riggers they have been so thick. If they are that thick nothing stands a chance.

This is true this is also why you look at the date on the side of the battery. I normally have them grab one off the back of the shelf to compare dates then if they are both old (3 months or older) I go elsewhere.

Ok thanks guys, I wasn't sure. Penn used to build only quality and highly desired reels. I was looking for a line counter reel that is compareable price and quality wise to the magda pro 30's. I really like the magda reels and have put up with a good amount of abuse on my boat. I have done drags in a couple and keep them lubed they still keep going. Once they start to fail I'll replace with convectors most likely. I have been an Okuma guy after dealing with their customer srevice. I bought a few broke reels and went to order parts and the service tech sent all the parts I needed free of charge including shipping. I told him I bought them used and he said that's fine don't worry about it the parts will be there in 2 days. Good luck with my new to me reels. I can't argue with that kind of customer service.

Are the Penn 209 LC any better than the magda Pro 30? I was looking and they are about the same price and I was looking for some backup downrigger/planer board reels.
-
Diawa are nice but they are twice the price of the okumas or penn. My father has some old penns I should see what they are maybe he will just give them to me. He used to use them as downrigger rods and reels fishing lakers back in the early 90s. I believe one has a red body and stainless inners (no linecounters). Does that ring a bell to anyone?

41* today hopefully it just keeps getting warmer. Long term forecast doesn't have the days getting much colder than 40.

Church does not make a big board set. I made my own boards that have worked out well and cheap enough to throw around without fear of them breaking. Look at the sticky thread at the top of the section it has plans for homemade boards. If you don't want to make your own I have ran the collapsable walker boards and they work ok not the best by any means. Lots of people run the big jon otter boats and they have great reviews but I have never ran them.

So this warm weather has got me optimistic in the ice leaving soon and allowing us to get out there trolling for those trout and salmon. What do you guys think will be your shakedown/splashdown day? I'm hoping between 3/19/16 and 4/2/16. I need to put a roof on the cottage so if I am done with that in march I will be out fishing sooner than later (if the ice is gone).

I bought a package of 10 color 27# leadcore for cheap this off season and need a reel for it. I'm looking to split the line at the 5 color mark to have as a multi depth setup (run 5 or 10 colors). I was thinking an okuma convector 45 but wasn't entirely sure it would hold enough backing and the 10 colors. I saw the post about volume of backing and copper and leadcore and I think I'm more confused than I was before. So I have 2 questions: What size (lbs.) braid should I use at my splice and as backing? What size reel should I get for the full 10 colors?
-
Yup no backing on my same setup except no roller guides on mine.

In my boat I run the 87 10% ethanol in my 1988 Johnson 150 with VRO. I haven't had any issues with gas being old or water in fuel. At every fill up I put the Marine StaBil in and never had an issue. This motor has well over 3000 hours on it and only thing I did was a carb rebuild about 3 years ago because the needle and seats were worn out. I didn't need to do a complete rebuild on the carbs but did because they were torn down already. If you take the care to add the fuel stabilizers before storing for periods longer than 1 month then you shouldn't have any issues ever. I am speaking from experience I have never had an issue with any of my motors and fuel because I run a fuel stabilizers. I have rebuilt, repaired, and cleaned more carbs than I can shake a stick at and 99.9% of the time the issue is old gas.

Alcohol burns cool, that is why you see your high performance engines (funny cars, super mods, ect) using it. If you are talking lean then yes if you run higher amounts of alcohol based gasoline you need more fuel in the air to fuel mixture.
-
They have seperate lines at my local fastrac too so it shouldn't make a difference Non-ethanol or not gasoline will go bad so you still need to use the treatment in it. Gasoline with ethanol will actually keep better longer the alcohol helps the gas from turning into varnish. But the trade off is with carbs that don't have ethanol safe gaskets they will be dissolved by the alcohol.

These things have been working great no issues. These lights are left on the entire summer while the boat is sitting on its rail system. I don't use them every day but they are still super bright and no water issues as of putting the boat away. One night we were on the waterfront and I heard some splashing in the shallows behind the boat so I turned the lights on and low and behold there were freshwater drum spawning (i think) or eating the bugs. Probably a good 20, I threw out a spinner and caught a couple right there. These lights are really nice and probably going to invest into a couple more. These are by no means a spotlight but they do throw a good amount of light to see the little off shore boards in the middle of the night. I was running 6 boards at normal walleye distances and they worked great. Also they are a wide enough beam to light up the deck too. I fished 3 hours with the lights, fishfinder, and autopilot all running and the battery levels didn't move on my Walmart marine batteries. I also wired in a switch so I can shut them off independently side by side from my courtesy lights. I prefer the white lights over colored just so it doesn't confuse other boaters. I generally leave these on as soon as I leave the dock I want to be seen. I am throwing around the idea of rail mounting a set up front to see at night when docking.

Yes I have to agree, seems like it is happening more often now or maybe we are just able to find out about it easier either way it is tough to trust anyone anymore. I can say I think I'm a pretty good judge of character but do give people the benefit of the doubt too often. My Father in law and I are fortunate enough to have a neighbor that gets bored and goes up to our camp every week or so. I am hoping that if they see the tire tracks it is enough of a deterrent to keep them out. We don't use gates because they will only keep an honest person out anyway, if someone wants to get in they will. On a side note in Chaumont Bay/Three Mile Bay area they were kicking in the doors to get in.

UPDATE: There are now 33 homes/cottages that have been broken into. Please spread the word so people that have camps in that area can have them checked. Link to the news article below. http://www.wwnytv.com/news/local/33-Homes-Broken-Into-Around-3-Mile-Bay-Troopers-Say-368289011.html You couldn't be more right. It is sad but it seems like people are getting more and more desperate.

They say if someone breaks into your home and leaves your expensive items alone they knew you. Maybe not a best friend but someone that knows your habits and what you leave behind after closing camp. Any seasonal home is an easy target.

There have been a series of burglaries out on Point Peninsula around 19 cottages/camps have been broken into. I saw this news on the Chaumont-Three mile bay chamber of commerce's facebook page. If you don't follow them but have property in the area it wouldn't be a bad idea to follow the page. If anyone is up in that area and willing to keep an extra eye open for things out of the ordinary I am sure the short timers will greatly appreciate it. I have been told by a local it was Luff shores area and the items stolen so far were guns and money. Here is a link to the chamber on there you will see a link to their facebook page. http://www.chaumontchamber.com/index.html It was posted on Feb. 7th
