  1. Tried turnips deer would walk past them into the soybean or cornfields, deer in my area prefer the clover. The trick is to get the does to come into the plot then the bucks will follow. Here is my suggestion for food plots for our NE weather, clover or alfalfa early season, brassica for late season.
  2. Then don't bait, they don't require you to do it is all up to the hunter. I sit on a 15 acre bait pile every year and have 2 other spots one on a 47 acre bait pile and a 24 acre bait pile. Obviously I am referring to AG fields it isn't much different of a concept like food plots.
  3. Genes aren't an issue I have seen deer in areas that trump Ohio. I have personally seen and shot deer that are wall hangers in the trophy buck states. NY has the real estate to keep and produce B&C deer if the brown it's down mentality is fixed. This isn't a good picture but my sister and I saw this guy just outside of Newark NY. She took the photo with her iPhone and zoomed in as much as she could. He is the biggest buck I have seen ever.
  4. I say big buck but he is no monster. 135" 10 point the other is a 85" 6 point. The kicker is that the 6 point was wider, the 10 point he only measured 14 1/2" inside spread. I have a few more of the 10 just have to get them off the camera.
  5. If you get a chance find yourself a set of downhill skis and wax. I used to have a smitty built out of old crates but where I fish I needed something a little bigger and lighter. I opted for the otter sled. Got her cheap on black friday last year ($59.99) I should have bought 2. I made runners out of the PVC trim board from HomeDepot and wax the bottom 2 times a season with armorall and she glides great on the snow.
  6. I have the Humminbird 35 and for what I use it for it is great. I fish a lot of small lakes (closer to the size of a pond) and less than 30' usually. I have had it for going on 3 seasons and works like the day I bought it. I really like the features for the cost compared to other big names. Mine isn't a LCD display but is fiberoptic without the digital readout. I guess if you really wanted the digital readout you could go up to the 45 but I didn't see a need for it.
  7. The front will almost always be lifted. just the nature of the bait pulling down. If they are getting your lines out to the side and not diving you're good.
  8. They are starting to move this next week will be a good one! I hunted one of my other spots on Wed. Lots of deer movement saw a buck as I was walking out he was grunting lightly but the only thing I could see was the top of his rack over the golden rod (it was about 5' tall) wish I could have seen the rest of him. We had a 13 point hit by a car 3 years ago in that same area and I saw him 2 nights before he got hit. Just massive hopefully this small patch has another big boy. There were 2 doe running around with 3 fawns so I would imagine those are his doe.
  9. I have a feeling that a nice 10 point in our area was poached before the season this year. We were seeing him almost everyday in the field next to my aunts house now he vanished no longer getting trail cam photos, no sightings, no sight of him while spot lighting at night. We have a few around our area that have been asking if we have seen him as they also had photos of him. No one has seen him in quite a while. Of course that is how the big guys get bigger.
  10. they better not pass a small buck to shoot that guy. I would imagine your butt would hurt after that rack...
  11. Me too I have a 9 month old and gets up at 5:30 weekends or not.Sent from my thinking chair...

  13. Yeah I haven't had tons of activity but things do seem different this year than the past. I have been out spotting a couple times and have seen 20+ deer in 1 sq. mile but come morning/afternoon there is nothing around. Tells me they are bedding during the day and moving at night, probably has something to do with the warmer daytime temps.
  14. I saw a few deer. I saw a nice 8 or 10 point at 35 yards but decided to let him pass. He was around 120 inches maybe 130 at most still looking for that big guy. I was hoping to whack a doe this weekend but all the deer I saw were way off in the distance. Maybe this coming weekend I can get into one of my better sets if wind permitting.
  15. I don't care, if they want to hunt me down for using a goby as bait while I'm fishing they can. Pretty sure they bigger fish to fry than some person posting they used gobies for bait. Also if you are using the goby and it is dead there is nothing they can say. Just like if you don't have a bait slip and your using dead minnows same deal they can't do crap. 16. I can't say I don't agree. I would rather see bow season, then muzzleloader season followed by "regular" season. They already have a muzzleloader season following bow in the North Country (Jefferson and surrounding areas.) I would also like to see 1 buck only. That would have made a lot more sense than this doe only crap.
  17. Should have lowered your pack and let him get close then whacked him. I have shot coyotes with my bow and had them come right under me but never had one charge me. If it were me I'd be packing my pistol after that encounter.
  18. These might work for you. http://www.amazon.com/Talley-Tikka-Master-Scope-Mount/dp/B00DUEN42O BTW I use the rings it came with for my nikon 3x9-40mm. The objective clears the gun no problem with room to spare. I'll see if I can get a picture tonight.
  19. It is just hear say but next year's plan is going to be interesting from what I have heard. They have been throwing around the earn a buck program, antler restrictions, and a hand full of others. I wish someone with some common sense would run/pilot these programs. Why not send out surveys asking what the hunter would prefer to see? In a lot of cases it is the property owners that dictate what happens. The surveys would cost money but can't cornell head the idea and get it covered in a grant of some sort?
  20. I used the rings and no issues that was one thing I did read about the Tikka people didn't like. Personally a good set of weavers will go a long way. Also never buy those "Quad-lock" rings they are a PITA to get the optics straight. Once you start to tighten them they rotate the scope in the ring.
  21. That is another good reason to have a properly tuned bow less arrow flex and faster arrow recovery.
  22. Chris you are 100% correct. I have been chastised for saying this deer or that deer grew 20+" in one year giving the area has all the right variables. I believe what I see and this is just a testament to QDM. Too bad more people don't get the big picture. Best part about those pictures is there is no arguing it! haha
  23. I would say in the 5 y.o. range, definitely a shooter either way. I hope you get a chance at him!
  24. Yup I didn't shoot a doe this past weekend because of it. Sent from my thinking chair...
