Deer Hunting...How much has changed for you?
Chas0218 replied to justtracytrolling's topic in Big / Small Game
My son will have his lifetime license at the age of 3. I plan on getting him into the woods whenever he feels comfortable. I won't force it on my kids but I'm sure if they see me doing it then they will want to. Even if he only fishes in his lifetime at least I know he won't need to worry about a license. I think a 100"+ buck for a first deer would be great for any kid. I'm not going to tell him he can't shoot a small buck if he really wants too but if that big guy walks thru and he has the shot you better believe he is taking it. I can remember all those little deer I shot when I was young and wish I had let them walk only to shoot a bigger one later in the season. -
Yup, what he said^ Back in the day Pennzoil was actually USA oil from P.A. now it is from overseas like most of the big name manufacturers. I buy Brad Penn oil for my old Camaro and that is actually pulled out of P.A. and refined here in the US.

Guys it's all in the name of the bullet Matchking meaning it's a match bullet for target practice. Most off the shelf boxes will have a "recommended" animal on the side. If there is one for this bullet I would venture a guess it has a bullseye on the side of the box or a prairie dog. When I get home I will look at my Sierra reloading manual and tell you exactly what that bullet should be used for but in my experience anything with "Match" in the name means target bullet. I would get something in the 170-180 range for that gun, it will be great when taking a deer or bear. Generally speaking the lighter the bullet the smaller the game.

They don't test the ticks anymore. They just automatically give you the antibiotics.

Be sure to clean that gun really good at the end of the season or after you break in the barrel with some copper dissolving agent. My buddy has a Savage 111 and he wants me to reload for him because his groups are maybe 2" at 100 yards and open up to 8" at 200. I have a feeling his barrel is fouled. He was shooting winchester supremes and I guessing that plastic anti-fouling plating has fouled up his barrel badly.

So I haven't hunted geese in a long, long time probably close to 15 years. I live south of corning and have seen a good amount of geese in the river near my house. I was going to ask to hunt in the river near these fields but got to thinking which would be better a field or the river. The corn in the local areas is all up still so I figured the river would be my best bet. Would ducks come into the geese decoys as well? I also wanted to add i have a dozen floating geese decoys. Thanks, Chas

Good to hear the rages are working out for you. My father in law had the same problems with the rocket mechanicals they were definitely flawed in design. I shoot the ultimate steels you referred to and have yet to loose a deer with them and haven't always made great shots. I mean I hit where I'm aiming but don't always take high percentage shots. I like the little head it flys great and super light (75gr.)

I would also throw a good 20 rounds down the barrel before you consider which round is most accurate. I had to actually break in my barrel before it would shoot like it does now. Also DO NOT heat up the barrel you will wear it out quickly and cause deformation of the rifling. Take a couple guns with you to allow your new .308 to cool.

Good read but I have had similar results with 1" cutting diameter fixed blade heads. I'm glad to see you have only lost 1 deer. Have you only hunted with rage heads or did you use other BH before the rage? How does you your ratio compare to your first BH that would be a good comparison. I'm not calling you out but I have tracked a lot more Rage hit deer that weren't found than fixed blade heads. I'm glad you are having success but doing the math you have a 8% loss rate. Not a bad loss rate. I have a guy on the neighboring property that has hit several deer and doesn't bother looking for them after 20 yards. My father or I end up shooting them during gun season or find them later during archery on our property. Last year I whacked a buck that was hit thru the leg with a mechanical (only the blade left in the joint below the front shoulder). I think the worst part about these large cut heads people think they can just get close to where they need to hit the deer.

What are your pins sighted in at I would hope they are in 10 yard increments? Mine are 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 I have found that if I have something in the 45 range I put the 40 pin on the top of the back and let her fly. If you have them set up at 5 yards just remove 2 pins and change to every 10 that will expand the distances between the pins. A friend of mine bought one of those trophy sights that you setup up the 20 and 30 yard pins and it does the rest. Personally I don't see how that will work being every bow is different and the distances between my pins are different. My 30-40 pin distance is the same as my 40-50 pin but my 50-60 pin is almost double the other distances.

I have peed out of my stand and had doe walk down wind of me and walk directly to the spot I peed. She kept putting her nose in the air licking and walking right to me. I'm not saying to pee on yourself maybe try peeing out of your stand. If the doe is in heat it doesn't matter if the buck is downwind or not the urge will be too great.

If I were you with that .308 get yourself a box of remington cor-lokts see how they group. I went out and bought expensive ammo (hornady, barnes, winchester supreme, nosler) for my .270 when I first bought it and the cheapo cor-lokts grouped sub MOA. I since started reloading with Superformance powder and nosler 130gr. hunting ballistic tips, magnum primers. Cheaper and will reach out further. Last season I shot my first deer with it at 355 yards. The deer went 10 yards and piled.

If you go up in peep size your accuracy will get worse. The idea is to have a peep that just barely shows your sight housing. I think you mentioned you shoot a copper john (it might have been someone else) so you would want something like a 3/16" peep. You won't get as much light transition thru the peep but I have shot in low light and haven't noticed a difference between the 2. Just this season I changed to a 3/16" peep my 50 and 60 yard groups were cut in half. I can actually touch 3 arrow groups. I own a 2007 bowtech tribute 50# with a CBE Snyper Pro sight with the .010" pins. I love the sight and the smaller pins are great at further distances.
