Inline Vs. Big Boards
Chas0218 replied to alex1young's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I keep my mast as far forward as possible. this allows my line in turns to stay away from my poles. I used to clip it to the top of my windshield and on turns it would get into the poles. One year I almost lost a pole on a tight turn with the big boards. If I am in an area where tight turns are a must I use my in-line boards other than that it's always big boards. I have lost a good amount of walleye on the in-line boards and are harder to read than the big boards. For me there are pros and cons of both but I prefer big boards. Big Boards Pros: Easy to read, Easy to deploy, Easy to attach fishing line, Deploy more lines (over eight rods). Cons: Harder to turn, higher cost $$, more equipment needed, takes up more room. In-Line boards: Pros: Cheaper, Easy to deploy, tighter turns, Cons: Fight board (loose more fish), cannot run as many lines (6-eight), sometimes releases need to be wrapped, sometimes difficult to attach/detach from line, harder to read without tattle tails, more line out\ I'm sure others will have more to say but these are just my observations. -
What he said x2. I would recommend a synthetic blend on the older motors instead of full synthetic. It is the best of both worlds, low ash and less carbon but all the same lubricating. Fully synthetic wasn't around when my engine was built (1988) so I stay away from it. If it is a newer engine (2000 or newer) I would only run fully synthetic. I run the Pennzoil synthetic blend XLF and Pennzoil Premium Plus. With a fresh rebuild be sure to add oil to your gas as well as running your oil injection.

Yeah i noticed the color difference as well. I don't know why they wouldn't just use the same color each year or rotate every 3 so they wouldn't need to buy new colored paper every year. Just use the leftover stuff.

I just had my Outdoor News come in and the front page has a section on the late mailing of the licenses.

Received mine yesterday. I called Tuesday and they said give it till today (Friday 9/5/14) then call if you don't get it they said it might be delayed because of the holiday. Generally mine comes then I go get doe permits. I still have to pick up my doe permits.

I prefer the Palomar knot for everything. I used to tie Trilene knots and they seemed to break off more. A side note if you have large diameter line (40lbs big game for flea season) and are trying to tie a small diameter like 12lbs use a Bristol knot http://www.netknots.com/fishing_knots/bristol-knot or a Yucatan Knot http://www.netknots.com/fishing_knots/yucatan-knot/ I usually use the bristol knot without any issues.

Mine have twisted when bouncing bottom with them. It looks like a gentle bounce to the rod tip but still bent about the same. Also make sure you have the weighted keel is positioned correctly underneath. I'm pretty sure it is supposed to be in the front, I can't remember without it being in front of me.

I like the suggestion but I am only 1 person and I would fish the Ams. I keep my boat on the east end up by the St. Lawrence I can trailer my boat to the derbys but it is not easy. Salmon fishing has finally fired up the past couple weeks here on the east end showing some great numbers. IF they were to swap the dates I would imagine it would help the guys out that travel from Wilson or the Oak to the East end. They wouldn't need to double back and possibly save people some money. Also I would think the tournament would see bigger weigh-ins and probably more upsets (no advantage to the regular winners).

I am in the same boat. Out of convenience I'm going with the raymarine A7 or A9 series. I can easily network my autopilot into my depthfinder/gps. One draw-back that kept me from buying a raymarine was finally addressed it was the refresh rate of the gps. It is now the same as furuno My only dilemma now is to get chirp or not. I am a multi species fisherman and fish walleye, and bass more often than salmon so I think Chirp for me would be good. Sorry the speed of the GPS was wrong furuno has 10hz (10x a second) and raymarine is 5hz (5x a second) except for the higher end units a9 and higher have 10hz.

Tried this originally with mine but it wouldn't steer worth a crap. I ended up with the Panther Ez-Steer system it works pretty good. I also made my own mounts that use band clamps to fasten the Ez-Steer to the engines. It looks just like the image attached except on my outboard it looks like 2 of the mounts on the kicker.

That is what I'm going to do next year.

Honestly it depends on the situation. Now if it were my boat, gear, and gas the fish was caught on and they didn't want to split other than the boat's percentage then there would be a problem and I would tell them to buy their own boat and gear for next year or up the boat's percentage. Either way they should be thankful they don't have the initial investment of the above mentioned and split the money. On average I have to budget $800+/month in gas for the months of July and August. My wife and I are school teachers so we don't work during July or August so I'm not spending much if at all in our vehicles.
