  1. I run the homemade boards and they pull a lot harder than any otter board with about 1/4 the price tag. I also made mine from 1"x10"x8' pine board from homedepot and all other stainless hardware from tractor supply. I didn't think the all thread (threaded rod) would hold up and not rust but seems to be doing great for the last 4 years. I painted mine with orange exterior paint then used polyurethane over top of the orange. Here is a photo of mine running. I added 1 strip of decoy lead on both of the outside boards with a couple stainless screws. I also run them with the point in the water versus in the air. These boards are maybe 10' or 20' behind the boat. I also attached a picture of the boards with about 120' of tow line out. I can also run about 5 lines per a side when trolling for walleye and spring browns.
  2. I want to add what size do you guys run? I have been running the ones about 5/8" I can't remember the size, does that seem about right?
  3. I see we share the same taste in beer!
  4. Is there anything on the carb telling you what brand it is? Throw a fuel pressure gauge on the line when you replace it and see how much pressure you're building. It should be 7-10lbs. more than that it will blow past the needle and seat any less it could be starving the motor for fuel. I would also replace the cap and rotor while you're at it. Just remembered you should also make sure the boat is level and check the floats are adjusted properly. A lot of times when a mechanical fuel pump goes bad it lets fuel back into the engine. I would check to see if the oil smells like un-burnt fuel. You should be able to tell with just the little bit on the dipstick. If it is surging that generally means it is running lean. Pull the number 1 plug and see what color it is do this right after you try to get on plane. Rev it up to highest rpm possible and shut her down immediately that will give you the best idea of whats going on mixture wise. Also double check the timing. I bought an old GM that was running like that and the timing was very retarded (no pun intended).
  5. The coolest thing was when that big boy hit my lure it pulled my inline planer right under water. These fish have some serious muscle behind them.
  6. My dad still has one of these on his boat. Works okay but a little clunky. I also think this unit is about 20 years old maybe older.
  7. My 7.5hp johnson does it when I first start it when I start my troll. You look behind the motor in the water and see this filmy brownish cream shoot out of the prop exhaust. Unsightly but completely normal, usually it is just the unburnt fuel and oil mixed with the water in the exhaust.
  8. A buddy of mine is like that, I ask where he is catching them and he replies "In the water". His friends and family have all been really tight lipped over the years about where and the techniques they use. I don't mind giving someone information long as the person doesn't blab it around to everyone and their brother. This year I was on the fish limiting out everyday when it seemed like everyone was doing okay but not as good as me. So I told my buddy that is tight lipped to me about where I was catching fish 1 weekend and the following weekend there had to of been 13 plus boats when I and my father-in-law were the only boats in the area. That was probably the last time I share the exact specifics of my spot. The key to really good walleye fillets is removing that brownish colored meat close to the skin. I never used to do it but I am a firm believer with my taste buds as my proof that it is much more flavorful. I do agree that crappie is better (sweeter) but I prefer walleye over everything else.
  9. They should make that part of the boating safety course. "If you see these guys they're trying to fish, give them some common courtesy and stay a little ways away."
  10. The worst was this one guy about 200' behind my boat, His kids wanted to play in the water coming off keel. I was like okay it was for his kids whatever I will give him the benefit of the doubt but once he almost ran my boards over and his kids (maybe 6 or 7) without life jackets leaning over the side of the boat (while on plane), feet dangling in the air. He was just asking for trouble. Funny thing though on Saturday Coast Guard and DEC were out, they pulled up out in front of us in 6'-7' rollers and asked for 3 life jackets and fishing licenses. I just got checked last weekend but I didn't care I was completely legal. Funny thing was actually the one C.O. that checked me the previous weekend walks out the back of the pilot house and yells "Got your autopilot engaged?" I yell over yup and I hear him chuckling behind the other guy. I didn't have to show my license the other guys on the boat did.
  11. Here is a couple from this weekend one was 30" long no clue on weight the other was about 26"...My father-in-law borrowed my scale but never returned it. My Buddy's: Mine:
  12. I like the challenge I feel like it's a personal vendetta to catch them. I just wish they had the fight of a salmon.
  13. I was out this past weekend trying to get into the Walleye as the Salmon won't heat up until Mid July on the East end, and this guy ran his boat plowing water about 10' from my outside planer board. At first I figured he didn't see it but was looking right at it and pointing at it. I have no clue what he was doing but he lost me a $7 lure and about $15 worth of braid. I can't believe some of these people. I also had 2 Jet skis almost run over my rear 2 boards. Why can't people give each other some room I mean it's a big bay and no need to be right on other boats.
  14. Yup 2.5 for me too. Generally I set my gps speed to 2.5 and once I deploy everything to where it needs to be I end up with a slower down speed from all the water resistance.
  15. Anyone else see the view count on this thread? This has over 1,200 hits in less than 24 hours. That has to be a record!
  16. Any idea what length it is?
  17. Until recently NO! haha
  18. I stand corrected. I wasn't exactly sure how it worked never had it happen. So you're saying if you drive and still see the rod first and tell someone to reel the fish in when you could have beaten them to the rod but let them reel in the fish it is still theirs? haha My buddies seem to enjoy watching other boats around us than grabbing the rod and fighting fish. You snooze you loose! I like the replies I'm getting. I suppose I need to start reeling in fish for them to be "mine".
  19. How long was the lead? Seemed like a perfect length. Sent from my thinking car!
  20. I think dec will issue the boat owner the ticket. Sent from my thinking car!
  21. I thought my work finally blocked it. I was about to call up my tech people and give them an earful....I only go on during my prep periods of course.
  22. I'm not talking a derby fish that's a gimme. I'm just saying if you're out for fun. I would prefer the real thing skin mounts are cheaper. I guess my downfall is letting everyone that goes with me reel in the fish. I generally don't touch a rod unless it is to rig it.
  23. So the scenario is, you're fishing with a couple buddies one them catches a once in a lifetime fish who is entitled to the get the fish mounted? This is your boat, tackle, ect. the only thing your buddy contributed is reeling in the fish maybe gas money. I say boat owner but my buddy insist if he reels it in it's "his" fish.
  24. I always go last in this case!
