  1. You try bending those tabs up? We used to have to do that on our older tractors and portable diesel tanks.
  2. For downriggers I use 2 brands of rods. For walleye you can't beat one of the Cabela's depthmaster Medium 8' 6" downrigger rod. They have a nice fast tip and are a softer medium. I have fought salmon and trout on these rods but they can beat you up a little unless you enjoy lengthy fights. For my salmon gear I use the Okuma products. My downrigger rods are the Okuma classic glt rods in 8'6" meduim they have a little stiffer spine and make fighting a large fish a little more enjoyable. Both of these rods won't break the bank and allow you to purchase a better reel. The rods aren't as important as a good reel. Word of caution before you get in too deep, this is an expensive sport.
  3. 6 they aren't required by law to have a license until the age of 16 but can still fish. With that being said I don't think you could get away with running 6 if the child/toddler was not able to physically stand or reel.
  4. I actually ended up wet sanding (400 grit or 320 I think) the severe oxidation spots on my boat then rubbing compound and lastly waxed it took me the better half of a week but the results were great.
  5. I generally run 40lbs. during flea season and 30lbs. PowerPro braid all other times.
  6. You didn't flip the switch as the boat was running did you? That is a BIG no no, if you did you likely need a new switch and could damage the electronics on the motor if you continue to do it that way.
  7. It think there are 2 in the classifieds that would suit your purpose. Anything around 10hp 4 stroke would do the job.
  8. Just have him wear waders and climb over the bow! haha
  9. Actually diesel oil has more detergents than normal "gasoline" oil meaning less sludge than a gasoline motor. Diesels produce more soot and contaminants than a gasoline engine making it more important to have more detergents. Diesel oil utilizes more phosphorous, Zinc and magnesium than gasoline oils. This is because diesel motors have flat tappet cams. These style cams have a flat metal surface that rides against a flat metal cam lobe without the additives the cam and lifter will fail prematurely. That is also the reason why older cars/boats run diesel oils. You can also accomplish the same by running one of those aftermarket additives in gasoline oil. I don't like the aftermarket additives they don't do as good of a job as the motor oils that have it in the formula from the factory.
  10. I have been going to FL for 3 years and have yet to get on the big water. Looks like this might have to be the year. BTW love the Obama supporters!

    Cheek meat!

Does anyone keep the "cheek" meat out of the walleye? I saw a post earlier about filleting with an electric knife and started watching some of the walleye filleting videos and not a single one kept the cheek meat. On an average sized walleye (7lbs.) they are about the size of a half dollar. So how many of you knew about or keep the cheek meat? Those are the best tasting part of the walleye. Every time we fry some up it is customary for the chef to take the cheek meat. Well that is what I tell my wife followed by her walking over and scooping one off the plate.
  12. Here is how I do it. I usually do my trout and salmon in the same manner except I leave the skin on and remove the lateral line by hand.
  13. Diesel oil is better if it has flat tappet cam. It will make no difference whether it says diesel or not long as it is the correct weight. Diesel motor oil just has more additives to help eliminate premature lifter failure. Your motor will be fine long as it is the correct weight.
  14. I use the big jon stuff on both sets of boards I own. Stuff works great but in a 25mph broadside wind the releases had a little trouble going down. I was thinking of adding an egg sinker to them to get them down better, just drill out the hole and slide it onto the shower ring.
  15. While transporting the boat I put mine on the floor of the boat with the reels towards the cuddy. My cuddy isn't big enough to fit my 8'6" rods never had any issues. When I'm done I put them back into the barn until I use them again.
  16. Never tried that brand specifically but have used other plastic holders. I almost lost a dipsy and downrigger setup because "I thought I would give them a shot". Personally I won't ever use another plastic holder. I will tell you that they do stand up to walleyes with inline planer boards along with trout (excluding lakers).
  17. I guess I'm one of those balls to the wall guys but I KNOW the capabilities of my boat and crew (when I have one). If you're fishing somewhat clear water (i.e. no obstructions) I would give it a shot. Worse comes to worse you have to call it and come home. At least you can say you tried. I have fished a lot in larger chop and it becomes more of a chore unless you are hands over fist in the fish. I have fun but the luckily hood of injury and stress go up a lot more in rough weather. Don't over do the amount of lines you put out in rough chop. The general idea less is more would apply in that situation.
  18. Man that is a discouraging picture. My buddy said that Chaumont is starting to open up near the river and around klines point but everything else is still solid. Also its about 24" thick throughout most of it still.
  19. I noticed that the other day I was trying to post ^ that word but kept coming up something strange...
  20. Gotta love it when the towing rig looks like a hot wheels toy next to the boat! That's when you know the boat is a biggin'
  21. Haha I know just trying to get a rise out some of these guys. Thanks anyway, I havent fished it in a few years. Sent from my thinking car!
  22. didnt know there was salmon in there! Sent from my thinking car!
  23. I would use it but run a kicker and according to their site it would interfer with the unit. Sent from my thinking car!
  24. Haha sorry i should have been a little more specific. I wasnt refering to anything new as in less than 15 years or smaller than 40hp. You can usually pick up a old 50hp outboard for around $500. Sent from my thinking car!
  25. Did you buy the boat new? If not then I would suspect someone put it on. Generally they didn't come with the thunderbolt unless it was ordered that way from the factory as an add-on. I mean they have had the technology in cars earlier than 86 but I can't remember when they started putting them in boats I thought it was 86 but it could have been earlier. My wife's grandfather has a '83 four winns with points and OMC.
