  1. If you are gonna keep them let the big girls go and keep the smaller fish. I suggest you fillet them normal flip them over skin side and remove any red you see. Doesn't matter what you do from here. I prefer using a zesty lemon pepper season in olive oil fried in a covered pan. I have had people who hate fish tell me they could not get enough of it. Been a few years since I have been down that way. I fished the river around Saugherties. Great time - highly recommend it. P3434 - that 42lber will make for a nice avatar pic. I think the one in mine is only 38 inches. (20-25lbs never weighed it - released to get back to business) Joe
  2. Awesome story. I would love to do that except I am afraid some idiot would shoot me.

  6. I agree. It is quite the conundrum. Is the enemy of my enemy my friend? I wonder if the tree huggers go thru this confusion when the deer demolish their shrubs and gardens.
  7. I am not trolling but I believe your logic is off. If you shoot the bear with ammunition its chances of survival are significantly lower than if you shoot it with a tranq. If there was a better way to relocate, I am sure they would do it. Secondly, the bear is dead for a reason - It didn't learn the first time. 3rdly, the real thing to take away from this is you don't feed the wild animals. Even unintentional feeding is bad and 4thly, a lot of these problem bears are coming from communities that do not have strong pressure from hunting. It is happening all over the country and not just the black bears. I feel bad for the bear but not in the typical Disney manner. I feel bad for it because it didn't know enough to fear humans. That is why it is sad. Hopefully, something useful was done with its remains and not just disposed of.
  8. I got mine on e-bay.

  12. I was river fishing at dusk one time and I was throwing my jerk bait in the rapids - Depth ranged from ankle deep to thigh deep. After my 9th bass over 17 inches it occurs to me that there is a musky below them in the waist deep water. 1st cast into that water and there goes my jerk bait - wasn't even that big ~ low 30s. Every once in a while in the river (especially Fall) you can see the muskies literally chasing other fish out of the water.

    Conesus inlet

I know the weather isn't perfect for a picnic but the eyes are in the creek and the as of yesterday morning, the males were bumping the females. By bumping, I mean taking nature's course. By taking natures course, I mean doin the nasty. By doing the nasty, I mean a nice segue into teaching your kids about the birds and bees. The water was gin clear too.
  14. I read this disclaimer... Our sampling activities are not set up, at this time, to directly assess impacts from commercial harvest. We can infer impacts based on our fish population sampling results and what we think we know about angling pressure on some water bodies but currently that’s the best we can do. His professional opinion based on logic is valid. 2 solid winters where the ability to extract fish from the lake was extensive. The median size went down but the overall numbers were ? ok? So in a round about way he is saying that it is replenishable albeit in numbers - not size. Most fisherman harvest the bigger pan fish and let the smaller go. The fact that they are extracting most of the bigger fish is no suprise. That would make the smaller fish more prevalent in surveys. I would not expect differently. This statement makes me wonder his background (bias). Do we know how many of these anglers were selling the fish they caught? The answer is no. Do we suspect that guys fishing day after day, week after week are selling fish? Yes. Followed up by... ...there is no doubt in my mind that commercial sale of angler caught panfish can and does impact the quality of fishing in many waterbodies across the state. A strong professional opinion (like a teacher - just saying) It would have been nice to read that the state is working on something more decisive. I am inclined to believe that the sale of fish can contribute to a population under stress. My questions are - how do you know it is under stress? How do you know that sale of fish is a major contributing factor to that population stress? So after I have trolled this for a bit. My apologies. Ric66, this was nice to read. Thank you for posting and I will most likely have to apologize to the nice fish biologist at some point. Joe
  15. Ahab - agree with you on the carpet baggers. Look at how Corning use to be. Corning use to have nascar events (HUUGGGE turnout) and needed no advertising - they now need to advertise that jazzfest and artfest is fun. Disagree with you on change. We need to adapt. I am not taking a position on the sale of fish, but, just because the road I grew up on is named after my lineage does not mean I have more rights to that hill than everyone else that lives there. Also, I think the carpet baggers in the fingerlakes are more concerned with yuppy life - not fishing. But yeah, the constant attack on my redneck values is annoying. Les, there is no concrete proof that the sale of perch is detrimental to the overall population. It is logical to say that there is a finite number of fish in any body of water and over harvesting can have ill effects on the fishery. Prove to me that it is a problem of over harvest and I will support the ban. I am not convinced. To me this is just a down cycle. What I care most about is getting my sorry a$$ into the 10 percent. Can we turn this into a poll? I just wonder how many of us are O For Sale of Perch O Against Sale of Perch O Undecided Joe
  16. Kevin, Never been to Rossie but the run at Conesus is pretty impressive. Try to make it every year.
  17. You could do a project that correllates the lack of productivity with the relative temperature and weather conditions and how it relates to the skin coverage on a 20 something female body... Research in this area would be exciting to say the least...
  18. The two I did 25 plus years ago were parental involvement in the school system and plastics in the landfill. Both easy and both rellevant - also boring. If I were going to do a snagging research project, I would look into those areas out west where it is still legal and piggy back off the movements that are already in effect currently. migratory bird act is outdated and needs to be redone. I am sure you can get signatures to support a position if you need one. I have a strong dislike for commorants and coyotes. I am sure I am not a lone.
  19. I got a humming bird with side imaging this year. I just hooked it up but haven't put it in the water yet. I don't troll so I want to know where the under water structure is. I watched the video that came with it but still have some questions about it. I am not good with programming vcrs and microwave ovens so I am a little nervous about looking like an idiot trying to get it to do what I know it can do. I am going to look for some youtube videos for some additional guidance. My main issue is that I don't have a jack plate on my boat so I was worried about the motors being in the way. I'll know soon enough...
  20. Here is a cheap option, http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cannon-Mini-Troll-Downrigger/738095.uts?productVariantId=1208181&srccode=cii_17588969&cpncode=42-156235842-2&WT.tsrc=PPC&WT.mc_id=GoogleProductAds&WT.z_mc_id1=00055799&rid=20#BVRRWidgetID I am thinking about whether I want to mount these relics I got several years ago. I don't troll. Do not think I will ever troll but just had to have them. They are solid, made of aluminum. I never used them. I am thinking about letting them go so the future garage sale has more space. I also thought about making them into man cave art. Get some feedback from people on LOU and then you can PM me if you are interested. The guy I bought them from said they worked fine - just got tired of doing the manual thing. They come with 2 10lb balls.
  21. Be careful darkwater. I cruise in a 16ft tiller and I am in the non catch pool. If you follow me around you will probably be disappointed. I have been hearing countless stories recently about guys blowing thru the perch school becasue they see guys catching them and think they need to be where the boats are. MEATMAN HAS SOME GOOD POINTS AND I CAN SAY THAT WHEN I READ ALL OF THESE POSTS (from everyone) ALL I READ IS PASSION FOR THE LAKE WITH A LIL SPICE. Lay off the pepper. Be nice and respectful and your post will mean more. Just cuz it works for the donald doesn't mean it works for you. fishing reports themselves create a dilemma. You want to contribute to the fishery and you want to preserve it. Exactly why I tell people not to report on a body of water with no internet acclaim. Guys hiding there catch is alright with me. There is no law that says they have to share. I choose to share in most instances but sometimes I keep it to myself - even lying about it sometimes. You each have to decide. I know there are some fisherman doing very well on that lake and the fact that it is under the radar is fair. It is the 90/10 rule and get use to it.
