  1. Pap's response is really accurate. There is a lot of food. I would try a drop shot with an actual night crawler loosely hooked and long line (back troll around 50ft of water.) light line 4-6lb (I love pulling that one out when nobody is catching anything with their high price baits). The other thing I would try is sending Kevin Legg a PM and ask him what his pattern is on the Larry / eastern bays. The 3rd thing I would try is going to Auburn and talk with the bass pros. I have learned from them. I share with them and I think other fisherman have shared with them so they have decent knowledge of what works. Its not like talking with the high school kid that works at Dicks. I never had good days for prespawn bass and always tried to leave them alone anyways (until summer). Trout, crappie, perch and soon walleye and pike - Why fish for bass anyways? That's my summer fish! Good luck and tight lines. I hope you get some 3 foot jumpers. Joe
  2. Thanks Mike. Other places to fish. People will survive without it. Skinny water should always be left unmentioned. A quick google search verifies this. There is no valid argument for spot burning this body of water. I never knew there was fish there until today. I looked on the map because i know where Lodi is and there it is - a little itsy bitsy creek which should be left unnamed. Right now lurkers are trying to determine the best means of plundering this nursery. Posted land only keeps law abiding citizens off of it. The owner of that campground should have his hands full for a couple of weeks. He probably has the sheriff on speed dial. Maybe a mod should just delete the entire post.
  3. When I read the original post and saw that it is loaded with fish my original thought was "because it is closed to fishing" Open it up and all those fish will be in a smoker somewhere. Mike is right. Call the DEC region 8 people and get clarification. btw, I have fished one of those streams that see no pressure and it is absolutely incredible how the trout seems to be as eager as sunfish to hit your bait. I felt guilty and left.
  4. Not bragging. My wife tells me to get it. She says "You keep my treadmill going and when it breaks you go and buy me another one so you should be able to spend money on your hobby (fishing)." I say "The treadmill is for me too (I don't use it)." She is wonderful about it and this attitude also gets me past the unreal amount of purses and shoes that she seems to have to have. Then I get thinking about the 1/2 doz pair of waders I have and I realize that I really, really have it good. Example... She called me up one day and said she found an anniversary band that she liked. I said "get it." Never asked how much it was and still do not know or care. My anniversary present was a 24V trolling motor. She never asked how much it was or said anything to me after she paid the Credit card. I am blessed to be in a relationship where we both think we are the lucky one.

  6. Walleye are broadcast spawners similar to perch in that eggs float (suspend) in the water aimlessly sticking to whatever where as perch tangle long strings into whatever they can attach them to. No digging. Where they are walking is a mixture of clay and mud. Also, they assume zero natural repoduction on this lake so they probably wouldn't worry about it anyways. I would have loved to see the shocking. I make the trip up there every year just to see this run. Simply amazing. Years ago you could see 20# + pike up there too but lately 10-15# is about it. I recommend anybody who has kids to take them there sometime this month to see it. It is very easy walking and if the feeder creek doesn't wash out is wheel chair accessable too.
  7. Are the fish bigger on the Canadian side? I know the grass is greener. Good luck with the perch. I remember picking off a few here and there but by summer they are pretty well spread out.
  8. I can tell you from past experience with DEC. The only way they will do anything is if you let them believe it is their idea. You could have Buffet's backing and they will say no because they have a high horse when it comes to eco engineering. They have the proper background and the power but (unfortunately) they also have arrogance. How dare Joe six pack tell me how to maintain a trout stream? Can't deputize citizens. One word - LIABILITY. You could train sheriff's deputies to handle specific situations and pay overtime with fines collected. More beauracacy which means don't hold your breath. The creek is resembling more and more a snagger's creek meaning it is mostly riffles. It could have some deep holes without compromising flood control. Also a good idea to close all of the feeder streams to angling (or more accurately, snagging). I really do not foresee any major changes. I think when you have concerns you should write or call them (DEC). Let them know what is bothering you. I have several times and I can say that I almost always get a direct response within a week or two. In some cases I am happy with the feedback and other times I stubbornly grumble about it. But if they do not hear our input then they are completely unaware. Even if they can't do things we suggest, they will at least have it in their memory for future reference. Good luck
  9. $12 for little 6 inch pieces with the cut ends polished (poorly). I saw some in Old Forge a few years back. I guess the big city yups like to use them for accent decorations.

If this makes you squeamish than you should probably play golf for fun or continue to ask for help when you kill something. This is definitely an epic fail and I am sure that all of us senior hunters have had examples of this. I popped a couple intentionally (after) just to gauge what the diet has been.

  12. With growth rates what they are on Conesus and Otisco, they should do moe instead of less. Good post.
  13. They stage. A creek like Catherine on April 1st, you have to. Not only do you stage but you have to have a gang to protect your spot. Not necessarily wetting the line. A few minutes before 7 is legal. I don't bother going trout fishing anymore on April 1st. I deal with it up North because of the size of the fish but I won't do it in FL tribs. I can not say if the crowds are better or worse than they use to be but I prefer to wait until the majority of people give up and then I go. Less fish but better atmosphere. As far as the media is concerned. Been watching them every morning showing pails of fish being dumped in stocker streams. Gets those 1 day a year fisherman amped up and ready to go catch something. This is their special day. Mine are May 1st, 1st Sat in May, 3rd Sat in June, and 3rd Sat in November.
  14. Very jealous - I would love to wade out somewhere where waders/liners/thinsulate/wool weren't needed. Cool looking fish too!
  15. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHR74wXVuus http://www.wideopenspaces.com/thethe-ultraskiff-360-future-personal-fishing-craft-video/?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_term=WOS%20Main%20Production&utm_campaign=WOS_newsletter_3.31%20-%20wos%20sup%20CA%2C%20FL%2C%20OH%2COR%2FWA%2C%20MN&utm_content=Final I love small boats but this seems to be a patented reason to be $1500. I fish routinely out of of a 4x8 platform and I can assure you that it is not as simple as the video claims. Extra poles are always in the way. I can barely touch my toes yet I would have to go in the basement to get my gear with this design. I am not against the design, I am against the price of the product of that design. as far as rolling the entire boat. The plastic pontoon with built in dolley works better and "still" will fit thru a closet sized door. $750 seems more accurate to me. If someone has one or wants one, I would like to know from a curiosity stand point how it performs next to bass hounds and open hull pelican/sun dolphin designs. The reasons for comparing it to bass hounds is because they seem to be after that market. Pelicans fit in to it as well. Shallow V or Jon boats with an Al hull or even canoe/yak are too different. If you ever fish from a bass hound you will know what I mean. For Jaw's fans... sorry about not needing a bigger boat.
  16. never been seasick. I felt a little nauseous just watching that boat disappear and reappear then repeat.
  17. I remember the story went that Conesus lake showed signs of VHS and they thought the culprit was alewives used as bait from Lake Erie. I do not know how they would know this with any degree of certainty. I agree. I also think cast nets are ok but I stopped using mine years ago because the rules got cloudy. I hate that part of fishing where ethically you are doing nothing wrong but you still feel like a criminal. That is why I use artificial whenever I can still be productive. At some point it would be nice to see the industry held responsible, instead of the lil folk.
  18. They still out deep?
  19. I love how I write the word S - X and it replaces it with fun loving. I had no idea it was a naughty word.
  20. Doe in estrus will keep them on longer. At least that is my theory. Once all the does are bred successfully they will stop producing the scent that makes the buck's produce the hormone which keeps the antlers attached. Something like that. My Dad taught me about the cold thing but logically it doesn't always hold water. This is also my theory of why too many does to buck ratio can hurt. Buck's get run down and can not recover and in the big picture of life, fun loving is not required to live on a personal basis so this diminishes the buck's potential prowess in the following years. Supplementing the nutrition in the winter months should overcome this. QDM is more complex then just antler restriction.
  21. Bass and pike close on March 15th. Well, at least this isn't as cloudy for me today as it was yesterday.
  22. It has always confused me. I do not understand it. If you get a response, can you post it?
  23. The debate for me is this simple. Do I want another "State" regulation to hamper me when I am fishing (ethically)? After a simple reminder (to myself) that the gun I was going to buy for turkey hunting became illegal in NY for the simple reason it had a thumb hole stock, I say "NO" and I say it infatically. Nothing good will come from another restriction. I am a reformed snagger and I can tell you flat out that I would never get caught if I was still doing it today. Ask the Russians if they are worried about it. I imagine they are shaking and not from fear but from laughter. You want solutions oriented suggestions. Pettition the state to enforce the laws it already has. You can pay for an eco officer to patrol the oak all season just from littering tickets he would issue in October alone. But more rules? Nah.
  24. I understand Rick's point. Ethically, I believe it very disrespectful to discard a fish whether it is just to show your kids to let them know you are manly or if it is only to harvest more fish bait. Logically, A removed fish is a fish removed regardless of whether it is table fare, coon bait, or tomato food. Gone is Gone. So the quandry for me is that now I have to decide between logic and ethics and then use logic to justify my ethics. I decided years ago that I will lead by example. I just do not see how changing regulations will stop people who are normally unethical from being unethical. Like an old girlfriend once said to me regarding her parents. "Once a cheater, always a cheater".
