Right, the aluminum spine is inside the bait. When the fish hits, the rocket usually slides up the line, after you land the fish, just slide it back down, retune the spine and send it back to get hit again!

Just like everything else they all have their day. 8" flashers are probably the most widely used size, but the larger ones are effective as well, especially with meat. If I had to pick only one size spoon for kings in the summer and fall it would probably be the stingray or Mag, that being said, steelhead seem to like the smaller spoons at times. It all comes down to personal preference and having confidence in what you are running. I would probably say that your preferred trolling speed is a huge factor in what spoons or attractors you choose. By that I mean, if you prefer to run slower the lighter spoons will probably perform better and heavier spoons like the NK's will be hanging dead, and obviously the reverse is true. Don't know if I helped or not, but it is really personal preference and how you like to fish. I see you said that you catch walleyes on erie with stingray size spoons. That is very interesting to me, as much of what I have ever read and been told is that people have better luck on the scorpion and standard sizes. Can you elaborate on your success with the larger spoons? Thanks, DJ

Fair Haven 7/19 - KINGS
DJ 17 replied to bout time's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Good Job! The green dots were hot for us as well, both white and silver. Spoons were absolutely useless, 2 skippys, and 1 hit on a 300 copper. A buddy out of Hamlin can only get strikes on spoons but not one on a F/F. wild how different it can be in the same body of water, even though the ports are a long way apart. -

Fished Thursday and Friday with forester Dave. We had fairly steady action for 2 days. Current was pretty strong. Thursday 5 kings 3 about 20# each. 2 skippys 2 steelhead 1 7# and the other was 15# 1 laker 7# 4 or 5 more strikes but came unbuttoned best water was from 170-210 Friday 6 kings 4 18- 22# 2 skippys half dozen or so more strikes but came unbuttoned Best water was from 170-210 except for one king came in 125 on the way in on Friday All fish were on F/F except for one hit on 300 copper on spoon and 2 skippys on spoons off a rigger best combos were: white sd/ hammer fly, green sd/ green glow, white w/green dots/ glow hammer, capt valium sd/ blue dolphin ( high sun), blue holo/crush glow pro-troll/ blue squid 280 and 250 dipsy, and riggers did all the damage. Few hits on copper all came unbuttoned. No idea on down speed/temp. Our probe decided to be uncooperative. We got my buddy's 14 yr old son his first KING! Weighed 21#. It hit the rigger and ripped out 473 ft of line in 1st run! I think he is hooked! I handed him the rod as the fish is headed for Canada, and he looked at me and said "I can see why you do this so much, this is awesome!

You can also try mc rockets. They are an artificial meat rig. They have an aluminum spine in them and are very easy to tune. Plus they last a long time, you can catch many fish on one rocket. Mike has tons of colors to choose from. Run them 4 feet behind a Spin Doctor and see what happens. I have had the best luck with them being my deepest rod regardless of how it is being presented.

Watermelon seems to catch anything .... some of the time

Broke off, Did the core break where you attached the dive bomb? How do you attach it to the core? I'm always afraid of weakening the sheath which can lead to break offs. Does anyone let out their core, say 5 colors, then let out another 50 ft or so of backing then attach a snap weight of some kind to achieve more depth? I have not tried it yet, just trying to figure out a way to keep from weakening the sheath of the leadcore, or for that matter I wouldn't want to attach a weight directly to a copper either.

How big are your swivels? If they are too large and heavy they can impede the action of your spoons. Try the smallest swivel you feel comfortable with and see if that changes your luck. Also, I don't like the swivels that come to a sharp angle where the spoon will run, try the rounded coast lock style. Hope this helps.

I have the Pfleuger presidents as well, paired with Nanofil and a medium lite fast action St.Croix 7' 1 piece rod. They are a very sensitive rig.

What are you running on the inside boards? If it is shorter and shallower switch it up and put the bigger boards on the inside. Also, when retrieving them go to the opposite corner of your boat and point your rod away from the board and that should help with keeping them from crossing your other boards. Or you could try shortening up your inside boards to give you more room while retrieving the big board. Just a few thoughts for what its worth. good luck
