Lost the Man That Introduced Me To The Big Lake
Xxx replied to fishwithmitch's topic in Open Lake Discussion
That's x2 for me also both my parents and my brother and my mother-in- law all with in a 3 year period, it's truely a sad situation, there isn't a time ever that I'm thinking about my family. I feel your pain and send my condolences to the family it a very tough time for anyone, that's a part of being a human, with feelings. God bless you and he's family. 🙠👼 🎣 -

This might be a little caveman theory on my part but this is the way I did it. First I bought a Berkley line counter that measures line in feet and attaches to your pole. I used the same reels also first I reeled on my leadcore line say your 5 colors then I tied the lead to the braid line. Here come the line counter set it up and reel your spool full and pay attention to the line counter what ever it reads, now you have the amount of the braid you need on the reel, so to get my a$$ backwards line on correct I just reel the line off the backwards reel onto another reel of the same size then your leadcore will be on top. This way there's no guessing. For each color being different say a 7 color the same technique is used, spin the core on first then your backing watch your line counter on the pole. Spin your a$$ backwards over on to the other reel, repeat your backing numbers on first then your core. Maybe others have a better way, this way gets the spool full to the capacity of the reel. If you do a 7 color now you have a 3 color. I did it so what one core did the other part made a short core. Like a 5&5 or 3&7. I use line counter reels so I know how much backer I have out or maybe I want to add a snap weight, I need to know how much line is out. A lot of guys just run a level line reel and estimate the amount of backer they want out. Hope this helps a little. PAP.

Which down speed & temp system do you recommend?

Read my post about ball depth, I had 120ft down on the rigger finder says its at 120ft, so we drove towards shore at same speed and the rigger ball did not bump up till I was in 90 ft of water, the ball is like a pendulum wich swings back with the water coming against it, yet the sonar says its 120, well it's not its at 90ft down yet it's 120ft from your transducer. With the smart troll it would tell you the depth because it uses a pressure sensor, which you might have to have 160ft out to get your 120 ft down. -

I'm glad to hear that the show was a success!!! I really wanted to go mostly for the venders and with the big storm they predicted I just couldn't leave mom home with the kids, will give it a go next year. It's a 10hr ride for me, and maybe the storm had something to do with the vendors sale. I'm just making a suggestion. I certainly hope next year will be a go. I really wanted to go to this as the Harrisburg sport show is a joke after that buisness with the AR. rifles. Hats off to anyone that had the slightest bit to do, along with the king pins of this whole show. PAP.

I have a .17 cal in a savage heavy barrel, this gun is smoking the 17 grain ballistic tip over 3000ft per second, I have shot piles of groundhogs out to 200 yards and I also shot 3 coyotes with the 20 grain boat tails out to 100 yards after that I rely on a bigger gun. Mine is super accurate and a fun gun to shoot. Mine is the hmr version, they have come out with a center fire, but have no seen one yet or the shells. I look every time I'm at cabelas but they never have it. They claim it's a hot item and it's gone with in a day or two.

I went 2#'s over, I'm hoping it doesn't create a dilemma, if it does, can't say nobody told me so!! I don't hammer on the lake but I do get up for a week at a clip a few times a year.

Justin I personally don't think you need sharks, if you went with the torpedos, with your new riggers you should be able to run 14/16lbs from Harvey they are sweet, your lake is similar to our home town lake, I ran 12#ers at 3mph for stripers with no problems. But if you want "sharks" then have at it. My buddy and I ran side by side he has sharks and I had the torpedos in equal weights and there was no differance, other than I had beer money and he didn't, yes they are nice looking all Crome and chiseled out like a old arrow head. If your going to paint them black it's your choice, best of luck with what ever you choose.

Even though this is strictly for eyes, there were some reports of hits and nobody home, after inspecting their flashers they found scratch marks from other fish teeth. So evidently they weren't interested in the bait. Hmm, I thought that maybe those flashy fish shaped weights may take the focus off the bait and follow the ball until the fish is no longer interested and drop away totally. I painted my weights flat black. I thought I wanted the fish to key onto the bait and that's all. I could be totally all wet but to me and some other, we decided on black for for the eyes and the rest of the species???

Thanks Yankee for your post, knowing that a hard core guy like you is putting the smart troll on gives me confidence in the product. I have a very good freind of mine that has a house on association isl. and he has the smart troll. We caught a 3 man ticket of kings that day, while others were struggling including me that's why Lonnie called me to go out with him. Shy of the charter guys I went out with, this was my best day on LakeO, being able to put that bait right in their face was the ticket, up to high or just below them they wouldn't go for it. With the smart troll he was able to put those lures in their face. One thing that amazed me was the differance in hight there was going in the opposite direction, the lures were 12-18ft higher, maybe on a better day that wouldn't matter but that day it did, and at 2.5mph with the GPS on this mile long troll somtimes he had to go over 3.5mph to keep the lure showing 2.3-2.5 and the other way just the opposite going down less than 1mph to 2.5 the same as the lure. If I wouldn't of seen this with my own eyes and a full box I would of never believed it or thought is was that drastic in differance from the lure to the sog. It is a hell of a exspensive gadget, but how many times guys on here said they would give up their sonar before their down speed no matter what brand they had. Come on income tax check!!! LOL!!! My wife would shoot me. Chas. That link I can't open?? -

Tyee Tanic is spot on with blow back, 2 years ago I wasn't catching fish and it was loaded on the screen, so at the Same speed and depth I did a check and found that with a 12lbs weight at 120ft down we drove toward shore and the rigger didn't bang bottom till I hit 90ft so that's 30ft off, went back let 160 out on the riggers oh ya fish on, this is one of the reasons I would like a Hawk. I since went with 12# torpeds from Harvey, instead of the pancake style. I can't go heavier on the account I have the older mag 10's. -
Geezer I had that exact same problem mine cracked on the back side under the exhaust manifold, I took the motor out, this was the reason the guy gave me the boat, stripped the the motor and took the block to a engine builder, he pressure checked the internal ways it checked out good, so he used a space age type cement and smeared the crack shut. That lasted for 4 years till I sold the boat and I still see it go on the trailer to our local lake. There's no internal pressure on a boat motor that is not a closed water system.

Welcome aboard frank, anytime a person with wide spread knowledge of the other Great Lakes, sounds like you might be a walleye person, is great a thing as we could exchange knowledge with each other. Maybe a chance to share different ways from your end of town as we could share our ways with you. Sometimes just a little change, something they haven't seen before might be the ticket. PAP.

Yea I saw the same show, the first shot laid the smack down on that critter, no doubt with the razor tips they have today that would blow a hole out the other side like a high powered rifle. My brother in law has a air rifle that shoots a 17 cal. Pill, it also takes a scuba tank to add air, like 3000 psi. All I'd have to do is buy the apparatus. Hmm I'll wait till the newness wears off and the price comes down. LOL

Best fish ever

That is so awesome basspro, to see her being that into fishing!! Congrats to your catch and your new best partner you will ever have!!! My girls are going to be 11 in Feb. I remember those days when they would pick the hot pink and purple with the bling on the flies. They all caught fish and they thought they were the big cheese!! Enjoy every moment they grow up fast. pap ðŸ‘👠-
Get the limit down to 2 and in the slot 26"-30" those are the best size eating anyway, if we keep any when my dad was still with us he loved to eat a pike that's the size he would keep otherwise they went back. All the shows on tv want you to practice catch and release, the Linders, Joe Butcher, Mark Romanack, there guys are trying to set an example of what it take to keep a lake in sinc. Maybe get the New York fish and game to take a few lessens from Maine's fish and game program. We go to Maine every year to ice fish, all holes must be drilled by hand no live bait and 2 trout per person, and someone is always watching. I play chief cook and bottle washer and wood stove tender. No way in hell am I leaving the cabin with the temp -30*F for 2 trout. I think the no powered ice augers make a huge difference that would be a thought?

Holy shyt man that was a awesome catch and a nice release!!!! I wish the pike guys would march to your guys beat. Nothing like fighting a mid size pike, thinking you have the mother pig eye on the line only to see a nice pike. With these two species it takes 20plus years to get that size maybe longer with your Muskie. When 1 dies whether it's buy carelessness or brutal cold conditions, there goes 25-30 years worth of that body of water, just think that fish could be older than the person that caught it. Very nice award choo choo.
