The start of Lake Ontario's King fishery - who was there?
Xxx replied to ReelPower's topic in Open Lake Discussion
This is great stuff fella's I'm just 50 and remember when the whole lake was like pea soup, never needed to get below 50ft to catch much bigger fish than today's standards, snagging salmon at the end of the Perch River one after another, you could literally walk across them, that's no BS. We had property on the Perch River, I think it was 1975, I was 9 when dad bought the property with a trailer house on it. Opening day of walleye season you could limit out in a few hours over in the Black River Bay Area in between the bouys, 5,6,7, pounders were the norm!! We had a 16ft tri hull with a Evinrude out board, maybe 50hp but it got us around the lake. Keep the stories coming this is great stuff. -
I think it's awesome when somebody pulls out an antique and someone can remember what it was used for. There will come a time when our older and wiser men will no longer be with us. That will be a sad day for sure so for now let's all enjoy the intelligence these older guys still carry with them. Keep up the good work guys!!! PAP

John is the guy that got me going on the Lakers, if your going to Henderson green or blue cow bells and he turned me on to big beetle spins, he's got lots. Drop your ball to the bottom and raise it up about a foot if using anything less than 16# weight. Going down towards Stoney Point 1.8 on gps if you have a probe 1.8 down speed coming back up 1.5 gps speed or the same on probe.

X2. I run my kicker off my swim platform so I strap my 3 gallon tank to the platform, I've been in some rough sea's and have yet to get water in the fuel. I have a Evinrude 15hp long shaft so mine sticks almost as low as the main. Also doubles as a protection plan when something goes wrong with the main, how well I know!!! Good luck with it.

i personally think that the rag boat operators think they have the right away no matter what the situation is they were told this by other rag boat owners or if they took a course they hear what they want, that is everyone else has to watch out for "them". Then like you mentioned the PWC. operators, Sweet Jesus, talk about brain dead. I'm not one for enforced laws, but having to take a PWC. course is a good thing, only this starts a snowball effect on all other things. I noticed in my 50 years of being on planet earth that the younger generation somewhere along the line lost a simple thing called "common sense" I see it in my own kids. I grew up on a farm untill 1974 when dad got hired at a new built terminal in Stroudsburg PA for Roadway express and I still worked on the farm untill I got my drivers license 1982, up untill then I drove everything from a tricycle to a combine, got my permit and passed my drivers test first go at it, now it's different, kids have no clue, then they get a PWC and they think everyone on the lake is just driving around aimlessly. On our hometown lake it's not only the kids the adults are just as bad. It's truly frustrating in the summer months us fisherman we must be on our toes when out there. I see no easy fix to this mayhem, other than grit our teeth hold our temper, come the end of August it gets much better as the goons go back to the city and the kids go back to school. I hope the rag boat operator got a lesson and nobody got hurt and he gives the fisherman space. Time will tell.

I like the mister twister, now they have come out with different length blades also, I took my twister and a little 900 watt gen. To Canada to fillet walleyes, when you go with 8-10 guys and they all bring in 6 eyes at 10:30-11:00pm I need a fast knife since I'm the dedicated skinner while the others clean up the fillets and bag them. The mister twister has been very good to me as I'm only on my second one with over 20 years of Canadian trips under my belt and 5 trips to Erie for a week at a clip, not to mention LakeO since 82. Don't leave home without it.

This is weird, we always watched them fly high over our house, but this 4th we had 5 of them come down in our yard, actually my daughters caught 2 of them. The kind that came down here I think are biodegradable because the the lantern part is like tissue paper, some had the sides burned out, but there is a light wire basket attached to a 2"x2" piece of sponge that I think held some sort of flammable gel. So the wire would defiantly give one grief if it got caught up in the prop. Those party ball things, they are trash and should have been disposed of properly by the folks that used them, I can plainly see why people would get upset with those type.

X2, I did the excact thing, same with my lights. Although I never owned a brand new boat it killed me to drill the first hole in my new to me and always wanted boat, if I went over my program once I went over it a 100 X, made temporary props to hold stuff in place, looked at it ran lines out hooked to the wash line making sure things were right and wouldn't interfere with one an other. Good luck with your new ride, looks awesome from what I could see in the pics.

Man you must have been on a rock orchard to bugger up the back side of the skeg, it doesn't look that bad. Maybe just straiten up the rough with a disc grinder and give it a coat of paint, as for the prop, Gill T is right on target, those are your options. I would buy a new one and get the old one repaired for a spare.

That's some fine eating there John, congrats to your day. Sorry to hear about your motor, I had my share of bad luck also, after 3 years I finally got my boat up to camp {Black River Camp Grounds} got out on the lake heading towards Chaumont Bay had 2 eyes in the box and wanted to run down to the far side, wrapped up all lines and fired up and got just about on plane when she just sat back down in the water WTF, thought at first it just came out of gear, nope nobody home, well maybe a cable tore after a good look everything is moving, the arms up top are doing their thing. Now I'm getting nervous so fired up the kicker and made our way over towards land when we spotted a man cutting his yard and he had a dock. He saw we were in trouble and walked down and motioned us over, well we met the nicest guy, he offered us a ride to camp to get our tow rig. He said he would be waiting for us, when we got over to his house he hooked our trailer to his truck backed it down his ramp which was really steep, helped us load up and he pulled it up to the road where we swapped trucks. I offered him money he wouldn't take nothing. He told us he broke down once far out and 3 PA. Guys towed him home and if there ever was a chance to return the favor he would, just so happened we were from PA. also, so a handshake and a good luck guys we were off to camp. To cut this short the lower unit shaft tore off. I have another ready to go back up, just been to busy with the holidays, but got plans to get up there the middle of the month. Totally screwed up my hole season, but will make it up when the Kings move into the trench. Best of luck with your motor!! On a brighter note I've been doing some research on the Dakota's and MAN you guys have some awesome walleye waters out there, some of the best in the country. I was amazed, you are really lucky to live in such a outdoors wonderland. Take care John, I'll post some King pics. for you to bring back some great memories from when you were in NY. PAP.
