Biggest Fish Of Her Life
Xxx replied to jacobj12k's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
A-lure-A I have twin girls and around 4 they wanted a fishing pole from the Easter Bunny, by golly he brought them their first Barbie pole, I ripped the scrap line off and put 6# Trylene XL on, I put a hula hoop in the drive way and told them we aren't going to the stream or the pond until we get 7 out of 10 cast into the hula hoop. The outfits came with a rubber weight to cast with. It didn't take long and all I heard was dad let's practice casting, about a week and they had down like a science!! So off to the stream we go down to my grandmothers house, they stock that stream heavy, soon dad I'm stuck, I don't think so reel in a little and then the drag started to sing, that was the best ever to see the excitement in their eyes is just priceless!!! Then we went to our pond that I stock with trout and there are some 10#+ rainbows and brownies in there with the majority over 20"s so we spent a lot of time at the pond, I made them fish barbless there and they would get mad when one would get off, but they learned to keep the line tight, and they liked the idea of not hurting the fish and they liked watching them swim back to the deep they would say. 3 years ago they were 7 and I brought them up to the camp, I didn't bring my boat up I had to much work to do on it yet, so I used my uncles 16ft the first thing they asked was where are going to go PEE, there's no toilet on this boat!! Well you go before we leave and hope you don't have to until we get back in, well this didn't go very well buy they went, my boat has a head on it. That day Emily caught her first walleye a nice 26" fish she was jumping around and said she caught the same kind of fish dad fishes for, it wasn't much longer Elizabeth caught her first small mouth, and it was a nice one it took her awhile to get that one in, she was so excited as it stripped drag, dad,dad what do I do, just reel line in when you can but not when the drags singing soon she landed a respectable smallie. By the time it all settled down 4 1/2 hours went buy with little rock bass and Sunnys and gobies they wouldn't take them off but the other fish they did which surprised me, but we had to go back in because they had to PEE. That was the last time they went fishing because not much later is when I fell and busted up my back, three surgeries later and 3 years later they got me as good as it's going to be, I got my boat up to camp, but my first outing of 3hrs I blew my lower unit, but my new one will be here Saturday and the kids get out Tuesday of next week so I hoping I can get up Wednesday to install the lower unit, because they already want to know when can they go fishing because dads back is better. You really don't understand what life is all about until you have kids and get them involved in the outdoors where quality time spent together enjoying the things you like to do. Now that there're 10 it's great they have their own personalities and humor, it's great being a dad!! Best of luck with your children, they will be fine and big in no time. -
What I see, a lot is a guys will spend $20.00 for a lure and what (I) personally think people don't under stand is that without quality terminal tackle that lure isn't worth the box it came in, cheap swivels 20 for $2.99 will not let that lure work to its potential!! Quality swivels that have the snap attached have a unique shaped snap that will allow the lure or what ever to move as free as possible and the bearing is made with quality so that it will spin under the lightest amount resistance, resulting in no line twist or free movement of your lure, long short of things is you have a $70.00 rod-$150.00 reel the best line and top shelf lure tied to a $.25 swivel, and Johnny has all second hand, flea market outfit but quality terminal tackle and out fishes you every time!!! That's how he's doing it.

Slow morning at Sandy

I'm a firm believer in the wind direction some of the guys that been on the lake might chime in here on why the easterly winds kill the bite. My dad used to have this saying,"winds from east fishing will be the least, and winds from the west fishing will be the best" I don't know but it seems to hold out. LOL. -
When I first bought my boat it was a mess, the guy pulled the boat out of a slip from Lake Onieda took it home and parked it in a barn and just covered the top from the windshield to the back, never washed it. 18 years later I buy this mess needles to say I tried everything to get the thick brown $hit off, after power washing it I and getting the thicker stuff off I ended up using a compound made by 3M it was the most aggressive compound they make and I used a 8" sander/polisher and I spent a week getting that crap off, but it looks like new again. Then I used a wax called Meguiar's Flagship premium MarineWax which also has cleaners in it, it was easy to put on but most importantly it was real easy to remove. This year I just went over the boat with the same wax and with in a few hours (3 max) it was done and shined like a new one. What's the best wax was a thread on here last year and many folks said how good this stuff was and I tried it, they were right. The compound I used was also mentioned it was a 3M product and I think it was like 1100 or 1300 I think that's the grit but I'm not sure. I don't know how else I could have done it. I will say I hurt in places I didn't know even existed!!! LOL. Good luck with it. Oh yea I burned up a Dewalt polisher that polisher really had power. Dewalt gave me another one no questions asked, I smelled it when I was about 3/4 done with the compounding.

O my god what a great fish for her first laker, her smile tells it all. Excellent job dad. I bet it was as exciting for you as it was for her. Very nice pics. also. Going to be hard to beat that one, but with all that excitement I'm sure she will be raring to go again!! I think you will have a partner for life now!! Congrats to you and your daughters day!!! -
No it's not!! With your perseverance and personality word will travel fast. When I first went into business for myself 23 years ago I spent a lot of money on advertising, I can and will tell you word of mouth is the best advertisement there is plus like mentioned above you want your clients to do well and in your situation you will be able to interact with them very easy and show them the ropes of eye fishing. Once again like mentioned above once you get basics down, if your any type of a fisherman you can figure it out. I consider myself a lucky guy as a kid my uncles took me on Canadian fishing trips, and my uncles were hard core walleye fishermen. I've been on numerous fly in trips and as time went on we were able to drive to the lake we fished for 20 years, then we started going to others, it always took a day to figure them out but we used what we learned from other lakes, including Lake Ontario. In your profession you will give the guys the education and the confidence to try it again and then they will be hooked. I remember my first charter for eyes it was on Erie and we had a 6 man ticket in four hours, the captain told us we were the best group he had in years, he even took us for jumbo perch, what I'm getting at is nobody forgets their first trip and many return year after year as they don't get enough time to go on their own, then they bring other friends and so on, you will do well!! It would be great to have a job you love!! Your friend PAP

I run a kicker also and there's no issues, the instructions tell you, actually mine came with a template port/starboard side where to install. They install at the water line of your boat and to the furthest outside corner. All I needed was a small level, a drill and a screwdriver and silicone, I used the clear.

I find trolling with the wind works better for me, usually a NE or N wind gives them lock jaw, but who knows, if there just comming of the spawn and staging in the bay it might be a different story.

Well I run the big boards, so I usually have them up a tad, but with inlines I would think you would want them pretty level with the water, so they are pointing straight out.

From my main line I use a #8 spro to attach my florocarbon leader and on the business end I use a duo-lock. The #8 spro is rated at 50lbs. and fits through the eyes of the pole and most level wind guides, that way if running a clean spoon or lure you can reel the fish up to the boat for a easy net. If running a dipsy you only need to deal with the leader off the dipsy.
